Chapter 1
Dr Abby Lockhart sighed sitting down at Admit to finish up with some paperwork. “Remind me never to complain about a slow day again.” She moaned to no-one specific.
“I cleared it with Weaver. We’re on for Halloween next week.” Susan says as she joins her at Admit.
“How did you manage to swing it?”
“We have to carry a bag to get donations, in a respectful way of course. All the money raised will go to charity.”
“What are you girls talking about and can I join in?”
“You can be such an ass you know that Morris?” Abby turns towards him.
“Abs you hurt my feelings.” Morris sighs putting his hands on his heart faking disappointment.
“Call me Abs again and I’ll hit you so hard across your head you’ll have ringing in your ears for days.”
“Whoa whoa. Someone’s defensive. Hey what’s this?” Abby turns and sees the poster that Susan’s put up for the fancy dress.
“All the doctors working the day shift on Halloween has to come in fancy dress to raise money for charity. Drinks at Ike’s afterwards.” Susan answers
“Cool who else is on then?” Abby turns and looks at Susan.
“You, me, Abby, Pratt, Luka, Neela and Ray.” She counts off on her fingers.
“What if I don’t want to come in fancy dress?”
“How about we making it interesting?” Abby interrupts before Susan has a chance to answer.
“I’m listening.” Abby glances at Susan then back to him.
“Make it a competition.” By now Neela, Ray, and Pratt have joined them at Admit.
“How?” Pratt asks.
“There’s four guys and three girls working then. Make it a battle of the sexes. Who ever raises the least money has to do a series of forfeits set by the others.” Abby shrugs.
“How many forfeits?” Ray asks.
“Three but everyone has to do it for it to count.”
“Okay I’m in.” Susan nods. Soon enough everyone agrees. Susan writes Battle of the Sexes on the top. Losers have to do three forfeits on the bottom before repining it on the wall.
“Two traumas on their way in.” Frank informs everyone and the guy’s head outside leaving Susan, Neela and Abby in Admit. Luka is walking towards them.
“Hey Luka you in for Halloween.” Abby asks. He leans on his arms on the desk in front of her.
“What about Halloween?” Abby explains what they had come up with and the battle of the sexes.
“Sure why not?”
“It’s just another thing I can kick your ass at.” Abby grins.
“Who won the pool last week?” There was a short pause.
“You but I won the air hockey a few week ago.”
“I won that.”
“Nice try I did.”
“I did.”
“I did.” Abby retorted.
“Your not gonna give up are you?” Abby shakes her head no with a slight pout.
“Are we still on for tonight?” Luka changes the subject.
“Yeah. Just give me 5 minutes and I’ll meet you in the lounge.” Luka smiles and with that he head off to check on his last patient. Abby goes back to her paperwork but it isn’t long before she feels two pairs of eyes on her.
“What?” She sighs putting her pen down. Abby and Neela are soon enough on either side of her interrogating her about what’s going on between her and Kovac.
“Nothing is going on. We are just friends.”
“Sure and I’m the next Bob Vila.” Susan replies.
“We talked. We cleared the air between us.”
“I’m sure you did more than talk.” Neela mumbles receiving a stifled giggle from Susan. Abby continues on with her paper work not really wanting to continue this conversation.
“Look we talked about what happened between us, stuff with Carter, Darfur, and some other stuff alright. We’re just good friends now.”
“What other stuff?” Susan prods with a suggestive grin.
“Just stuff.” Abby sighed not wanting to go into the late night conversation about Richard, Maggie, Eric and everything that happened in Croatia with Luka.
“Oh come on you’ve got to give us more than that.” Neela urged her.
“We are just good friends.” Abby sighed again.
“Abs you ready to go. Movie starts soon.” Luka interrupts their interrogation.
“I’ll just grab my coat.” She replies eager to get out of there.
“I’ve got it here. You left it in my locker this morning.”
“Thanks.” Abby smiles whilst he helps her put it on.
“Your turn to pick salted or sweet popcorn?”
“One of each again and share?” Abby suggests as the make their way to the exit.
“Deal.” Luka smiles as the doors open.
“How can she say there is nothing going on with them?” Neela asks.
“No idea.” They head back off to check on their patients.
