I really love the idea of this sequel. And I think it is really well done. If I had something to complain (and this is only a really small point) it is that Abby working as an OB nurse and doing some shifts in the ER is not realistic. Working in a hospital myself I have never seen something like this. But I can only speak for Germany - maybe somewhere else it is totally normal. And as I said it is a really minor point and maybe you need it as an element to get Luka and Abby working together in the ER in upcoming chapters. And I really hope there will be many many more. Good Job.

Abby was an OB nurse who pulled some ER shifts when she was fist introduced as a season regular....i think that in a lot of US hospitals they *float* nurses around as needed.

dirndlgirl: You noticed it! At first I was thinking on leaving Abby up in OB but then like lovinluby says, decided to introduce her into the ER the way the show did. It looked forced right? ...Oh well, I tried.

CHAPTER 6: MEETING LUKA CO-WATCH
A man with her mother?! ...It was only when Abby walked into the building that Lily decided to reveal her presence opening the window to see the stranger better...
“HEY YOU! What’s your name?!” She poked her head out the window. Luka turned around to look up. A girl was leaning out of Abby’s window, obviously her daughter. “Luka!” He replied with a smile. Abby had a beautiful daughter. Slowly, he began to walk away. Luka?! The name sent a chill down Lily’s spine. “Luka what?!” She insisted. He turned around one more time...“Co-watch!”
…Why did she ask his name? Now she was dying of curiosity to know who the guy was. Lily paced in front of the door waiting for her mother to come in...
“What were you doing outside with a M-A-N?!” She spelled the last word as if it could cause a disease. Abby was caught by surprise as she entered the apartment. “Excuse me?” Lily was always overprotective and territorial. “They guy who was sucking your face off.” She folded her arms across her chest. “Oh.” Abby avoided her gaze. She’d seen them. “He’s someone from work…Didn’t you promise to stop spying on people?” She couldn’t tell her, not yet. “I’ve never seen him in the hospital.” “He is new…” “And you are hanging out with him because…?” Abby turned around to face her daughter. “Because I want to marry him.” Lily opened her mouth to say something, but nothing else came out. “He is just…Someone, Lily” Lily dropped back onto the couch, defeated. But not that defeated…Round 2: “He has my father’s name.”
Abby was stunned. How did she know…If the FBI would take kids, Lily would definitely be one of their agents… “But a very weird last name…” “How?...” Abby began to question her. “Duh…On your way up here I asked him.” Lily rose from the couch to grab the phone. “Thai take out or Chinese?”
Abby gave big sigh. “Look, I …” “It’s okay mom. You can date anyone you want.” Lily tucked her hair behind her ear. “Just don’t…” She looked away. “Just help me find my dad first.” Her little face showed how terribly hurt she was feeling. It was a knife straight to Abby’s heart. Trying not to screw things up by saying something she shouldn’t at the wrong time, she approached her. “I can assure you that I’ll give him to you; wrapped in the nicest paper I find.” Lily gave her a slight smile. “Blue?” “Blue”
LATER THAT NIGHT…
Not being able to sleep. Lily tossed uncomfortably in bed. She tried to fix the pillow under her head, moving her head from one side to the other. Useless. She couldn’t stop thinking about him…the M-A-N… “Mom?” She raised her head to see her. Abby was fast asleep on her bed.
Lily pushed the covers aside and swung her legs out of the bed, then walked out of the room in silence. The clock in the living room had its hands pointing at 12 pm as the second hand was making the usual Tick, Tick, Tick…and like a shadow creeping in the darkness, Lily sat next to the telephone to look up his name in the directory.
Her finger slid down every page, every name that could sound like Co-watch…Why she couldn’t stop thinking about that guy? Maybe it was because he had her father’s name…Luka…He was tall and handsome…could he be?...No, her mom wouldn’t hide it from her…Her eyes left the names written on the pages of the directory to look at the red shaped mirror ornament on the coffee table. She stretched out her hand to take it and studied her reflection on it, a little surprised by what she saw. Her hair was dark, just like his …and her eyes, their eyes were similar …and he was called Luka…Way too suspicious. She put the mirror aside and continued looking for the name…Luka Cowatch…but there wasn’t anyone by that name…
“One second…” She turned the pages quickly to Letter K….and there it was. The only one. “I’m good at this..” Taking a pen, she wrote the address and the phone number on a ripped piece of paper and folded it carefully. She had to see him. It wasn’t too far from their place….
HALF AN HOUR LATER…
Uneasy but determined, Lily walked straight to his door. That was it, she was there and she had to talk to him, ask him….She knocked on the door…But ask him what?!...She suddenly froze. What if the man wasn’t her father? What if it was only part of her ridiculous obsession? Maybe he only had his name and that was it. She was going to end up making a scene…Terrified, she turned around to walk away but it was just in that second that he opened his door. “Yes?” She just stood giving her back to him. Why did he have to open on the first knock? Normal people never did it…maybe he wasn’t normal…what was he doing awake at these hours? Maybe he was a drug dealer…She turned around scared. Not a single word came out of her mouth. Luka stared at her questioningly at first, until he recognized her… “You are Abby’s daughter.” She nodded swiftly. The paper on which she had written his address was being crushed in her damp hand. “Did something happen to your mom?” Concerned, he took a step out of his doorway. “No…I…” “Are you alright? You want to come in?” She shook her head. “I don’t think I should…” “I think you should…” He nodded towards her pajama pants, the light rain that had begun on her way there had spotted them with mud. Her sneakers were a mess and she was soaked. Cold and embarrassed, she decided to accept his invitation.
“Don’t tell my mom…” She whispered as she walked in. He chuckled “I won’t…”

I like the way this story goes. It is unexpected. This didn't look forced at all. It caught me totally off guard. I can't wait for the talk Luka and Lily are going to have. And I try to imagine Abbys reaction when she discovers that both already know the truth.

It wasn't that crazy, then?...oh well, all my stories are. I'm happy you enjoyed it. Thanks to my lovely Lady MacBeth for your eternal patience and for your nights of inspiration. ________________ CHAPTER 7: “OUR DREAM”
...Lying on the sand, Luka raised his head to see her sitting by his side, watching the horizon as she grabbed handfuls of sand, letting it run through her fingers. He smiled, stretching his arms to caress the soft skin of her arm. “I want four.” He said. She chuckled at his words and leaned to capture his lips in a tender kiss. “That’s because you’re insane.” She dusted off her hands to then cuddle next to him. “But if your mom wasn’t…” He made a cautious pause. “…How many would you have?” She frowned. “Why would I still want to have them?” “You said that was the only reason…How many?” “I don’t know.” She began to make random circles with her finger on his chest until he took her hand. “Okay, okay…maybe one…” “Maybe?” He tickled her a little. She squealed “Okay, two!” “Two boys, two girls…boy and girl?” He sat up, grinning. “Hey, it’s not like you can chose the sex of a baby.” She leaned against him. “…but babies aren’t something I want. Not really.” She looked away and he knew her heart ached. Because he knew her like he had never known anyone in his life...
“You are older than I thought” He handed her a mug of hot chocolate. Lily tried to adjust a quilt around her, she shuddered a little as the hot cup warmed up her hands. Luka had insisted that she change into a dry sweater and pants. His old clothes. They were too big for her small size but Luka didn’t take a no for an answer, catching a cold in wet pajamas was something he didn’t agree with and something her mother wouldn’t like at all.
With a mug in one hand too, he sat on the couch in front of her. There she was; Abby’s daughter... “Lily?” He asked, a little unsure if the name was right. “Yes?” He arched his eyebrows as if expecting an explanation, an explanation about what pushed a girl like her to walk through the rain in the middle of the night, looking for a man she hardly knew... “You must be wondering what I’m doing here…” “Actually…” He cleared his voice. “I was wondering how you found me…and that too.” “Sorry…I just…I…” Lily started to bite her lower lip the way she did when she was in trouble or about to be reprimanded. “I looked for your name in the directory.” He nodded trying to understand. “And you found…?” “Your address and your phone number…” He nodded, trying to understand. “Because…” “Because…” Lily thought for a second. “Because I wanted to be sure that you are... suitable for my mom.” Luka smiled at the notion but then added: “At one in the morning, in the rain. Sounds very reasonable.”
“Yeah…” She was lying and that was something she never did, she couldn’t do it. She began shaking her head, denying her previous words, her eyes focused down on the mug she was holding. “I’m sorry…” Her tone softened as she spoke. “I just…” Lily gave a big sigh. “I thought you could be my father.” Her cheeks began to burn.
Perplexed, Luka tried to understand what Lily had said. “Your father?”
Lily nodded timidly, her fingers pressing the cup in her hands. “His name was Luka too, that’s why I thought…Please don’t tell my mom about this…” She suddenly left the mug on the table. “She would be so embarrassed…I am.”
Luka was too lost in his thoughts to listen clearly. “You don’t know your father?” “And he doesn’t know me either…Mom and I have been trying to find him these past few months.” Lily began to feel terribly uncomfortable. Luka frowned at the thought. He couldn’t imagine what Abby must have gone through, having a baby and then the father walking away. He studied Lily for a short moment. How old could she be?...and then, it suddenly struck him. “How old are you?” He unexpectedly asked, his voice rising a bit. “What year you were born?” Out of the blue, he was puzzled and exploring the possibility… Lily just stared at him. “Why do you want to know?” He shrugged. “I’m just curious” “That sounds very reasonable…” She teased, picking her mug again. “1985.”
He remained in silence, even though his mind was full of possibilities and unanswered questions. “I think I should take you back home.” Something inside was suddenly urging him to go and see Abby. “No! Mom will know!” He went to grab his coat. “She’ll know anyway. You have to go back home someday. Come on…” He needed to talk to her… Surprised but not giving up, Lily followed him with her eyes from her warm spot on the couch as he went to grab his coat. “Can I…May I finish my chocolate first?” She gave him the cutest of all her smiles, because Lily had a smile for every situation. “I’m cold…and this is the best cocoa I’ve ever had” She batted her eyelashes like no child could do and took a big sip from the mug.
She looked like Jasna. Just like his daughter, the little girl he had lost. A cold shudder washed him over and the emptiness in his stomach grew as his heart suddenly warmed up at the realization. “Sure.” He smiled a little. “But I’m taking you home anyway.” “Do you have cookies?” She changed the subject immediately.
He went in search of cookies in his kitchenette, his eyes going from the cupboards to Lily from time to time, studying the little girl as if that could answer the questions in his head. “So, your father…” He found a package of cookies. “He was married to your …mom?” “No.” Lily went to sit on one of the stools on the other side of the counter, watching Luka emptying the package of cookies into a jar. “Richard wasn’t my father. He was a jerk who spent my mom’s tuition for med school. He was nice at first but then make her very sad…” Lily took a cookie out of the jar as Luka leaned on the counter to process the new information. Abby’s life hadn’t been easy and he was beginning to feel like the jerk. “And your father…” “Mom loved him.” She smiled savoring the cookie. “She said he was tall and good to her. They met on a summer vacation and she said it was instant love.” “Summer vacation?” Luka’s heart began to beat faster and faster. “Yes.” Lily soaked a cookie in her mug and bite it. “The only problem was that he was Croatian and she is American and well, he had to go…and he left. He was a college boy on vacation with his family, you know, he just couldn’t stay, so he left.” Luka could’ve easily portrayed a ghost at that particular moment. His features were blank and the information he both was and wasn’t expecting was given by… his very own child. A child he never knew he had…with the girl; the woman he loved deeply but couldn’t save from harm all these years. “Are you okay?” Lily looked behind her. It seemed that he was lost in thought. “Luka?...”
...“What if you had them with me?” He gave her big smile, the summer breeze tousling her hair. “When I finish med school, I’ll come back and we can get married and have babies. We would bring them up and love them together no matter what and you won’t have to be afraid.” Abby looked at him stunned. “Luka.” She chuckled. “You live in a dream world.” “No” He wrapped her arms around her waist bringing her close to him. “I just like to dream…about the future. Our future.”...
He suddenly looked at Lily. “Enough cookies, time to take you home.” He hurried out of the kitchenette.
Lily just rested her head on her palm, taking another cookie from the jar and for the tenth time since she entered his place, she looked again at the beautiful framed map of Croatia hanging on the wall. Satisfied she soaked another cookie in the most delicious hot chocolate ever.
