Abby sat on a bench, facing the lake and looked out, eyes blazing, her mind was going over all the things she wanted to say to him, God she needed a smoke, but she couldn’t, which only worked her up even more. She closed her coat around her even more and gave a heavy sigh; she’d been out a long time, a few hours. She wondered if Richard had even bothered looking for her. Probably not, she thought of Richard again and felt irritated, but she was feeling a little better than she had done before and sighed once more, it was getting late and she really should be getting home. As she got up stretching her back a little she felt a strange sensation in her abdomen. She put a hand to it immediately and froze for a moment, about two minutes later it started again, she broke into a huge smile, it was kicking, her baby was really kicking. She started to make her way hurriedly back home; she had to share this with someone. She turned the keys in the door.
“Richard!”
She called out; there came no reply, only a muffled sound of some moving and then a quiet, “Oh shit.” She wasn’t paying much attention so just closed the door behind her and walked over to their bedroom, opening the closed door and starting beginning her sentence, still smiling, one hand on her stomach.
“Richard, I felt our baby move, come…-“
She stopped mid-sentence as she saw her husband gathering the quilt round himself looking like a rabbit caught in headlights, and to the other side, coving herself with her strewn clothes a tall slim girl with short black hair.
“You never said she was pregnant…” the girl started looking at Richard then down at the floor guiltily. Abby stood in the doorway, not taking her eyes off Richard, as the girl quickly put back on all her clothes and made her way out hurriedly. Abby grabbed a large bag from under their bed and started gathering her belongings slowly and calmly, Richard started trying to explain himself.
“I’m sorry Abby, I’m so sorry it’s not what it looked like.” Abby said nothing and just carried on packing her things.
“Wha… Your not leaving are you, Abby you can’t leave you’ve got nowhere to go don’t be stupid.”
Abby ignored him, moving into the bathroom and getting all her things together. Richard followed her.
“You were saying something about our baby, what about it?”
Abby rolled her eyes and threw her bag down. “So it is OURS now then?” she started sarcastically, Richard reached out to touch her arm, she snatched it away and started putting more of her things in her bag.
“Just get some clothes on.” She said disgustedly.
“Where the hell are you going? You don’t have any money.” He stated ignoring her last comment.
“You didn’t care what I did, what I felt or where I went before why does it matter now?” she asked moving into the living room, her bag almost full. Richard still followed after her, grabbing a towel to cover himself up.
“Your having my baby I have they right to make you stay.” He stated, Abby scoffed at this comment.
“Since when exactly? You haven’t come with me to the hospital at all, you never seem interested at all in the baby, and when I come home to tell you I can feel our baby move for the first time, you are screwing some random whore you probably dragged in off the street.” She grabbed a hairbrush that lay near the table and zipped up her bag.
“I think that’s enough for now. I’ll come back to pick up the rest of my stuff when it doesn’t make me sick to look at you.” She ended glaring at him angrily.
“No, come on Abby, you know I love you. I love you and the baby, we’ll be great, don’t go, just don’t go…” Richard started sounding panicked realising she was serious. Abby just let out a sarcastic laugh and headed to the door.
“Just. Don’t even talk to me.” She turned round looking at him in disgust.
“Just wait-“Richard started before she cut in.
“Stop trying. I’m leaving. I’m not coming back.” Said Abby as she turned the doorknob, Richard caught her arm.
“No you just”- Richard started again, Abby glared at him and spat at his face to make him let go, a second later his fist collided with her eye, she stumbled back towards the door holding herself up on the handle, he had never done that before, they both froze for a moment, Richard started again.
“Oh my God.. Oh God I’m so sorry Abby, I’m so sorry, just give me another chan”-She knew what he was going to say before he said it and she was already shaking her head.
“No.”
“Abby please.” He reached for her again, she flinched back a little scared now and opened the door, her eye hurt like hell.
“Just keep the hell away from me.” She said as she ran out of the door with her bag.
