Chapter 3: Should I or Shouldn’t I
Dubrovnik
“Gabby, come here,” Luka said as he chased his daughter from her bedroom with her clothes.
“No, Tata, no!!!” she said giggling.
“Do you want a chocolate pop tart?” he asked her. She was like her mother in more than one way. Sometimes it killed him how alike they were. From the way they looked to how they ate to even what they ate. It brought back so many memories.
“Yeah!” Gabby screamed as she ran back toward her father. Boy did she love her pop tarts.
“Okay, let’s get you dressed first, and then we’ll have pop tarts. I am going to drop you off Djed’s house. I have to go to work today.” Luka said, as he pulled on her pants.
“Otay Tata,” she said.
“I love you Gabby.” he said.
“I dove you Tata.” Gabby said, and then she ran into the kitchen, yearning for her beloved pop tarts.
Chicago
“Taylor, do you want to go to Auntie Susan’s house and play with Cosmo?” Abby asked the little girl.
“Um...yeah! Let’s go,” Taylor said as she grabbed her shoes and began to try to put them on.
“Okay then, let me grab some of your stuff.” she said, and went into Taylor’s room to grab some extra things.
“You ready Mama?” she asked.
“Yeah, do you need some help with your shoes?” Abby asked her, and Taylor nodded.
“Tank you,” she said as Abby finished buckling her little shoes up.
When they got to Susan’s apartment, Taylor immediately ran into Cosmo’s room to play, leaving Susan and Abby to talk. Abby didn’t know whether or not to talk to Susan about all of her feelings, but right now, she needed to talk with her before she did something stupid. “Susan, do you think we can talk about something that’s been on my mind?” Abby asked her as she sat down at the kitchen table, Susan following slowly behind.
“Yeah, sure, anything. I knew something was bothering you. Why didn’t you come to me sooner?” Susan said with a genuine look of concern plastered all over her face.
“Well...I’ve just been thinking about her...and...him,” Abby said looking down.
“By ‘her’ and ‘him’, do you mean Gabrielle and Luka?” Susan asked.
“Yeah, yesterday was the two year anniversary of him leaving.” she said, tears building in her eyes.
“I know. I didn’t know if I should call or not. So have you been thinking about them a lot lately?” Susan asked, taking one of Abby’s hands. She knew that that had been extremely hard on Abby, so it was a delicate situation to approach. Susan was glad that Abby was able to talk to her about it.
“I have never, never...stopped thinking about them Susan. I just can’t believe that it took me two years to be able to talk with someone about it. I’m just so scared. I haven’t heard from him, and I didn’t bother calling him. Maybe he’s moved on.” Abby said, tears beginning to fall down her face. She couldn’t hold it in any longer, she needed to let all of her pain out, and Susan was always there for her.
“Well, why don’t you call him?” Susan said, regretting it the moment that it slipped her mouth, knowing that she would get an earful from that very statement.
“I don’t know Suse. It’s been too long. I thought I would call him, but then again, we came up with this situation so we would never have to see each other again.” Abby said, thinking through everything.
“It’s very obvious that you want to see him. You haven’t dated a single man ever since you two broke up. I know it will be hard, but if you have been feeling that you love him, then you should go for it.” she said, hoping that Abby would listen to her. She had talked to Luka, and he was saying the same things, but told her not to tell Abby. She didn’t know if now was the right time to tell her or not, but they were definitely still in love.
“I don’t know, it’s probably a bad idea.” Abby said, looking down again, more tears streaming down her face.
“Abby, you never know what could happen.” Susan said placing the phone in front of her.
Abby took a deep breath and began to slowly dial the numbers that she had memorized the day she received them in the settlement. The phone rang and rang, and then she got the machine. She quickly hung up the phone and Susan gazed at her. “Machine.” she said.
“Well why didn’t you leave a message?” Susan asked her.
“Susan, I probably would have hung up anyway if he answered. It’s probably best that I didn’t get to talk to him. It’s just that pretty soon Taylor is going to know that she doesn’t have a dad and I don’t know what the hell I’m going to tell her.” Abby said, breaking down again.
“You will know what to tell her when she asks.” Susan said getting up and walking over to Abby, embracing her.

“Djed!” Gabby exclaimed as her grandfather opened the door. He picked her up and kissed her on her head.
“Thanks Tata, I just really need to get to work now.” Luka said to his father as he handed him Gabby’s bag.
“Anytime Luka, you should bring her over more often.” he said and Luka leaned down to kiss Gabrielle.
“Bye sweetie.” Luka said to his daughter.
When Luka got to the hospital, he checked in immediately with his boss. “Luka, I need to ask you a favor.” he said.
“Um, sure.” Luka replied.
“We have a conference in Chicago, and I was wondering if you could go. It’s next week.” he said.
“Um...did you say Chicago?” Luka asked him unsure if he had heard correctly or if his brain had taken over him.
“Yes, it’s next week at County General hospital. Get back to me on that one.” he said and Luka stared off into space. It was at County. What was he going to do? He longed to see her, but should he just fly out there? He was pretty sure that she still worked there, but would she hate him even more if he went out to Chicago? Should he or shouldn’t he go? He knew that he wanted to deep down. He wanted to see her, but was it good for them? Should he or shouldn’t he? It was a question he would ask himself a million times before replying to his boss. Little did he know that the one he loved, the one he should have stayed with, was yearning to see him as well. It was a complicated situation, and right now, it seemed that his brain was taking over his heart. His heart told him yes, go for it, tell her how you feel, but his brain was telling him, no, it’s a horrible plan, stay in Dubrovnik, it would just make things more complicated than they already were. Should he listen to his heart, that kept telling him that he loved her, or his brain, which thought it was a bad decision?
