Chatter.....that was what Maggie was all about. She never stopped talking. If she wasn’t going on with Abby and I...it was with the nurses.....the other parents....the residents. And it was always something functional. Meaningful questions and comments. I missed just sitting quietly.....holding hands with Abby and whispering about our son. Privately. With Maggie, the world was her stage. She knew everyone by their first name in very short order. Everyone had a right to what she had to say and ask. I sensed that immediately. I should have known. Her daughter was so intensely private. No wonder they clashed. No wonder at all. I glanced at my watch and then over at Abby in the wheelchair next to me.
‘You need to go back?” she asked. I nodded.
“Me too.” She shrugged. “It’s about time for the lactation coach to come with her torture machine again.” I grinned. Her eyes glanced upward and she took a last note of the monitor readings and sighed. I smiled softly at Joe, patted his incubator and then took the handles of the wheel chair and started toward the NICU door.
“I can take her to her room, Luka,” Maggie said as she pulled her gown off and stepped alongside us.
“That’s okay, Maggie,” I said as I pushed Abby into the corridor. “We’re fine.”
“Well, I’ll come along any way because I want to talk to her coach,” she said. “I think if she....”
“That’s okay, Mom,” Abby interrupted. “We’re getting along okay.”
“Something is not okay, Abby,” Maggie went on as she double stepped to keep up with us in the hall. “You haven’t managed to produce any...well...at least not enough to make a difference for the baby anyway....yet.” Abby thrust her head back in frustration and rolled her eyes. I hurriedly pushed the chair into her room and up to the bed. I helped Abby stand and she eased herself back into the hospital bed.
“I just think that if you.....well....it was hard getting things going when you were born. You were so stubborn and wouldn’t latch on at first,” Maggie was saying. “Now with Eric I was a virtual fountain. No problem getting things started there. No sir. That boy was.....”
“Mom!” Abby interrupted again and raised her hand. “Stop.”
“Well, honey,” Maggie started. “I have done it before, you know.”
“Done what, Mom?” Abby cried angrily as she thrust her head back into the pillows. “Given birth to a premature baby? Had a hysterectomy? Tried to breast feed after all that?” Maggie’s face fell and she frowned slightly.
“You haven’t done this......” Abby’s voice was quiet. “Just leave me alone and let me do it by myself.” We all looked toward the door as Abby’s coach came in with her breast pump on a cart.
“Hi!” she said brightly and then her face fell as she caught a drift of the tension in the room. I leaned over and kissed Abby’s forehead.
“We’ll leave you two alone,” I said. “I’ll see you when I take my dinner break. Page me if you need anything before then.” She nodded and cast flashing eyes toward her mother. I took Maggie’s elbow and steered her reluctantly from the room. I closed the door behind us and Maggie leaned her back against the wall in the corridor and folded her arms across her chest.
“She does this to me all the time,” Maggie sighed angrily. “She pushes me away when I could be helping her. She has always done that.” I put my arm up on the wall and looked up at the ceiling.
“I don’t know why I even came......” her voice trailed off and she looked at the floor.
“You came because you love her...and the baby,” I said softly. “She.....we.....know that.” Maggie hesitated and then looked up at me. A smile slowly snaked across her face.
“Oh, you are just oozing with European charm......” she drawled playfully. I could feel myself blushing.
“Give her some time and some......space,” I said as I linked an arm through her’s and led her back toward NICU. “She’s had a very tough time.” I pushed her gently toward the NICU doors.
“In the mean time,” I finished. “Keep an eye on my son for me.” Maggie smiled and nodded as she glanced back at me. I sighed heavily as she opened the door and watched through the glass as she began the required hand washing ritual. Keeping peace between Abby and Maggie was like balancing in the middle of a teeter totter on a playground. It was exhausting trying to keep up with them. I headed toward the elevator with my thoughts on Abby and what was happening in her room. She was trying so hard to do the right thing for the baby......to produce breast milk for his feedings. All the tension couldn’t be helping. And she was pumping every three hours. I prayed that something would happen. And soon.
