Wow. That was an amazing episode. I kind of expected to doze my way through as I have since 'The Book of Abby' and found myself absolutely riveted at the end. I was way more affected by Brenner's emotional revelation than I was by Banfield's last week. Maybe having even just a little more history with a character makes a difference?? The way his tale was intercut with the happenings with the patient and the little girl in another room was absolutely chilling. Nice story telling. And Morris continues to be the go to guy with all the back stories. Liked all of the interns MUCH better this week. Still don't like Gates but I did like Gates and Sam's depiction of a family with two teens. Low and behold, Newlex even bared a little bit of acting chops...playing a teen. Duh. Still find the two of them alone a bit cloying however. Can't figure out why though. They are decent actors but the chemistry seems to be missing. (Sigh...I DO miss my Luby!) And I really liked Dubenko's kick in the old arse to Neela's education as a doctor. Heh.
Modified to add that Paul McCrane directed this episode. Seriously Emmy contender material for him.

woah. is it me or is ER getting good again? last two episodes been powerful and moving. the end was simply harrowing in this one. i completely agree with you larue when u said u need a bit of history with a character, think last ep wasn't as moving as we were suddenly given this rapid transition from b**ch to grieving mother in the space of a few minutes. Only thing that saddens me slightly is TPTB still have done nothing really to develop Neela's character. Two years ago at christmas she was alone, being yelled at by Dubenko and hung up on Ray. If this demonstration of her lonelyness doesnt finally devleop into a meaningful relationship (as Bremmer seems to be the ideal candidate!) then i shall be very irritated. theyve messed with her character since s12 when gallant died-enough is enough imo!
P.S. Massive favour...does anyone have the Book of Abby they could send me? the only episode that I can't find on any sites and obviously I am dyyyyying to watch it!

I do not know what they're doing differently this season but it seems to be working very well because we yet had another emotional installment. Who knew Brenner was hiding such a dark past. His character had grown on me other the past weeks and i think tonight episode proved his place in ER.
but one thing i still can't get over is how much Alex has grown. We don't see him for a whole season and he comes back completely different person.

Maybe the Newlex caught himself some acting lessons while he was gone??? Anyway, I think with the huge moneyed cast members gone (Maura, Mekhi and Goran) there is more $$$ to play with in terms of screen time, better random patients, camera shots and what not. The exodus of the actors that carried the show for a while kicked some duffs in the seats about fixing the 'holes' that were left. It's really showing. I was impressed that Andrew's eye surgery became more interesting - rather than bloodied gross - to me. It kind of reminded me of the earlier years in ER. All the treatment stuff really caught people's interest and was the water cooler talk...at least in my little world.

I agree that this season seems to be going back to its old roots. there is a lot more patient doctors relationships going on and i actully like the storylines involving the patients, where as the past seasons i haven't really cared that much about them.

Finally got to sit down a watch it, everytime I did it past few days keeps getting interrupted... Brenner's story was emotional, I can see now why he acted the way he did at the beginning of the episode, especially when he didn't even try and defend the guy having his head beaten in, he watched by... Isn't it sweet that it seems to be Morris is the one everyone turns to with their sad past... He was there when Banfield told him what happened with hers... Haha I forgot about Banfield in this episode... Another great episode, I am enjoying ER very much still after departure of my favourite - Abby, ER was my favourite before Abby came along... Me a loyal fan ER in general... Well Dubenko was strong to his opinion towards Neela about teaching med students, telling her that she is not wanted there is she isn't prepare to give back what she got as a student... It seem to be the regular med students are Tracy Martin and the twins Daria and Andrew - the other one, Sanchez? He has only been only like twice...

I am in the minority here. I finally watched the entire episode and I tired to care, I wanted to care, but I just didn’t have it in me. I agree with Larue, I think some back story into Brenner’s life would have helped, or maybe this was supposed to be his back story. I’m also annoyed that Neela hasn’t developed as much as I would have hoped but I"m not giving up on the show, not after 15 years.
