Here's a new chapter and its a bit longer!!
In the Cafeteria
Susan sat silently in her thoughts as she waited for the others to join her for a cafeteria dinner. The group’s pathetic excuse for a dinner, as they called it. Even though most of them had chosen different medicines to study, they all still shared these times together.
Susan and Carter had just gotten into another tiff about when their wedding should be. They had been engaged for over two years, and Abby was continually bugging them to set a date. She said that if they didn’t they would just be one of those weird couples that stayed engaged forever, but never marry.
“Hey,” Kelly said as she joined the table. She had just gotten a call from the adoption agency saying that their names were on the list, but it would probably be a couple of years before they would hear anything.
After several years of trying to find a surrogate and trying every fertilization drug on the planet, she and Jake had finally decided to go toward adoption, but it wasn’t going well. So, Kelly was in a sour mood as she sat down next to Susan.
Neither Kelly talked, but instead just stayed in their thoughts. However, Jake came soon after and began talking.
“Did you see that guy?” Both Susan and Kelly looked up dazed.
“Huh?” Susan questioned.
“The guy that Weaver brought in?” Jake questioned. “Ringing any bells?”
“Nope.”
“Not really.”
“Oh,” Jake sighed, sitting down next to his wife. “Where are Abby and Neela?”
“Um, I don’t know where Neela is,” Susan said, getting over her tiff and into the conversation.
“But something is going on with Luka and Abby. Luka just handed the kids off to me earlier, and then they were all secretive upstairs, and I think I just saw them both leaving with the kids. Something odd is definitely going on.”
“That is odd,” Kelly said, “maybe one of the kids is sick?”
“Maybe.”
“I hope everything’s okay,” Jake stated.
“Me too.”
Later at home
Luka shut Lexy’s door half way, just the way that she liked it, and blew her one last kiss good night, as Abby did the same to Luke’s. After a small dinner of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, they had each read a child a story and then switched and read a story to the other.
“Weaver knows,” Abby whispered anxiously, as Luka shut their door behind him. He looked at her with his intense glare, waiting for her to explain. “She knows about Luke.”
“What?” He questioned her. “How?”
“The test for Hannah, they do a full DNA testing. They have to make sure that it’s a great match, and she found out that Luke wasn’t…well, that he wasn’t technically…” Abby paused finding it hard to say the words.
“Mine,” Luka added.
“Yeah,” Abby glanced down at her hands, then she looked up sharply. “But she isn’t going to tell anyone. I told her not too. She doesn’t know that he’s Jake’s. She won’t tell anyone. It’s just that I can’t believe that I didn’t think about the fact that they were getting DNA testing and that someone might figure it out. What if it had been Jake?”
“Abby, calm down,” Luka said soothingly. “He didn’t find out, and Weaver isn’t going to tell anyone.”
“Yeah,” Abby sighed. “I know. I guess I’m just a little on edge, with that and Lexy tomorrow, and my daughter being here and not wanting to see me, and well, the pregnancy.”
“About that…” Luka trailed off.
“I can’t say that I am exactly ready for another baby, and I can’t tell you what I would have done, had neither of our children matched Hannah. It’s just something that I can’t know. But I couldn’t have let Hannah die…..” Abby paused, “I’m glad that I didn’t have to make that choice.” Luka nodded.
Abby took a seat on the bed and Luka followed her. “I think we should tell Luke and Lexy tomorrow morning about everything. Let them in on everything. Tell them about Hannah. If Lexy is going to donate her marrow and be in pain for her sister, she should have the right to know. And I want Luke to know too. It’s his sister too. What do you think?”
“I think that that is a good idea,” he said with a smile. “We should go to bed; it’s going to be a long day tomorrow.”
“Yeah,” Abby agreed. She stood up and kissed Luka on the cheek.
“Thanks for being so supportive, I love you,” she told him with a smile.
“I love you, too.”
