Thanks guys, new update!! ;DChapter 18 The house was cold as Luka and Abby entered the front door. Abby’s eyes quickly caught glances of items that had been thrown about by their children that morning when getting ready for school. Items that Abby would generally have made them put away or clean, but they hadn’t had their mom that morning to make them clean it up. Abby automatically began picking up a pair of socks that were lying haphazardly on the couch and then picked up the other items that hadn’t been put up. Her house was a mess. “Abby,” Luka said as he approached her side slowly. Neither had spoken on the entire ride home, and Luka was concerned about Abby’s behaviour. Abby wasn’t the type to show her emotion, she would keep it up inside. Since the miscarriage, had Abby had not made any references or shown any emotions about what had happened. This, Luka knew, wasn’t right. He worried that she might be in denial about the whole situation. “The house is a mess,” Abby complained as she picked up Lily’s night shirt and balled it up in her hands. “What were the kids thinking? They know better than this.” “Abby,” Luka whispered, taking the wadded shirt out of her hands, “they were probably in a hurry. We’ll make them clean it when they get home. But for now, you need to rest.” “I’m not tired,” Abby said dismissively, ignoring Luka’s comment and continuing to pick up the living room. Luka sighed and rolled back his head in defeat and prayed for patience. Then he closed his eyes and also prayed for a way to reach Abby. His eyes opened slowly, and he, again, moved toward his wife. “Ab’s,” Luka said gently taking her elbow and forcing her to look at him, “we lost a baby. We need to…” “No,” Abby stated bluntly, “No, just stop.” “No, Abby, we need to talk about this. She was our baby, our Le..” “Luka, stop it. I don’t want to talk about it.” Abby dropped a doll that she held in her hands and sighed, “Fine, I think I will rest.” Abby walked away, leaving Luka alone in the living room. As she made each step up the stair case, Abby felt her body grow heavier and heavier. And with each step, she moved slower. A sigh escaped her lips when she reached the top, and she paused closing her eyes to regain her focus. When she was ready to walk again, she walked down the hallway and past all of the rooms, because her room was at the end of the long hallway. As she glanced into each room, her body stopped abruptly when she passed the guest room. The door was wide open and the light was shining brightly onto the cradle in the centre of the room. Abby’s breath caught in her throat and she felt tears prickling behind her eyes. A shiver flew up her back and Abby’s body lightly shook, reminding her of her goal. So she closed the door and then walked to her room. After she pulled the covers over her body, she heard footsteps in the hallway. Abby quickly closed her eyes to act as if she were sleeping. She didn’t want to talk. Luka crawled into the bed next to Abby. He manoeuvred his body so that he was next to her in the bed and wrapped his arms around her frame. Abby’s body tensed at his touch, but Luka didn’t seem to notice. And before Abby knew it, she was asleep.

New update..... ;DChapter 19 The sound of the phone ringing caused Luka to jolt awake. The first thing that he noticed was that Abby was missing. He looked around curiously and got out of the bed to try and find her. When he looked toward the clock, he saw that the kids would be home soon. Maybe Abby had gone to get things ready for them. He walked down the stairs and found Abby sitting on the couch, in the now clean living room, talking on the phone. “That’s wonderful,” she was saying with a bright voice, although her features betrayed her words. “I love the name.” Abby paused as the person on the other side spoke. “Yes, everything is great here, the kids miss you. You should come and visit us soon.” Abby paused again. A distressed look came over Abby’s features, but Luka could tell that she was trying to stay light for the listener on the other end. “Yes,” she said into the phone, “in August.” A strained laugh passed Abby’s lips and she said, “You’re right that will be humorous. When do you think that you can visit again?” Another break. “Good. Thanks for calling, congratulations. Bye.” Abby held the phone at her ear for a few moments before shutting it off and placing it into her lap. She gave Luka a small smile when he walked in and stood up. “Hannah had her baby today,” she told him. “A little boy, 7 lbs. 5 oz., she named him Michael Stevens Geller. Isn’t that sweet? I guess I’m a grandma now, kind of, huh? Isn’t that just odd? I don’t feel old enough.” “You aren’t,” Luka reassured her, guiding her to sit back down. “Yeah, she’s really excited. She says that she’s going to bring him down in a month or so.” “That’s good,” Luka agreed. “Did you get enough rest?” Luka questioned Abby as his concern returned, no doubt hearing the happy news of a baby being born on the same day that Abby lost her baby didn’t have some effect on Abby. “Yes, I slept plenty. I’m feeling fine, really. Really, fine,” Abby muttered. “Are you sure?” Abby threw her hands up at his questioning and stood up in frustration. “Why do you keep smothering me? I told you that I was fine, now just leave it be!” Abby yelled in irritation. “No, Abby,” Luka told her in an eerily calm voice, “You are not fine, you lost a baby. I know that you are not fine,” Luka paused, “I’m not fine.” “I’m sorry,” Abby whispered, “But I really…. I just don’t want to talk about this right now, Luka. I just…I can’t.” “But I need…” Luka was cut off by the front door opening and all of the children rushing in, talking loudly and throwing their book bags onto the floor. They all paused when they saw their parents standing in the living room, and turned looking for answers. Lily broke away from the group and up to her mother. “Are you feeling better mommy?” And with those sweet words, Abby burst into tears.

Thanks guys, new update!! ;DChapter 20 5 Days LaterLuka was at a loss. For the past five days, he had absolutely no idea how to reach out to his wife. Abby had only cried once since he had brought her home from the hospital. She had cried when Lily had asked her mother if she was feeling better. Then her tears had cascaded down her pale cheeks in waves. And he had pulled her into his embrace and allowed her to weep into his shirt. Then he had known how to help her, but not for long. Because, as quickly as the tears had come, the tears had disappeared. And she hadn’t cried since. Now Luka didn’t know how to help her. As each day passed, Abby grew more and more distant from everyone around her. It wasn’t just him; it was her kids as well. She hardly responded at all when the kids spoke to her. When she did speak, she usually snapped at who she was speaking to or mumbled under her breath. Luka was trying to give his wife space and allow her to grieve in her own way. However, she didn’t seem to be grieving. She just seemed stuck, and every day, he swore she got angrier and more unhappy. Abby’s side of the bed was empty, again. Luka sighed as he got out of the bed and walked into the hallway. He was heading toward the stairs, when he heard shuffling in the guest room/nursery. Luka’s eyebrows knitted as he wondered what Abby was doing in there. She usually avoided that room at any cost and was down in the kitchen or living room scrubbing the floors or tables. That was another thing that bothered Luka; Abby never seemed to be his Abby anymore. Luka pushed open the door to find Abby on the other side. She was piling the baby items into the crib. She was working frantically trying to make sure that everything was in its proper place. “Abby,” Luka whispered, causing Abby to jump in fright. She turned around, shock covering her face. When she realized that it was Luka, her face softened, and she turned back around getting back to work. “What are you doing, Abby? It’s two in the morning.” “We need…we need to get this all cleaned up. We obviously don’t need this anymore. We should take it back, or..or we can send some of the non girly things to Hannah, or..give it to charity, to a family…a family that needs it…” Abby’s voice was frenzied and anxious, causing concern from Luka. He came up behind her and placed his hands gently onto her shoulders, bringing his chin to rest on top of her right shoulder. “Come back to bed,” he said softly, “We can do this in the morning, but your body needs rest Abby. You need to rest.” Abby’s shoulder’s sagged, and Luka sighed, believing that he may be getting through to his wife. However, mere moments later, Abby swerved around, nearly knocking Luka off of his feet; her movements quick and unexpected. “I’d really rather just finish this now,” Abby said, her voice chipped. “Abby…” “Luka, I swear if you don’t stop, I’ll hit you over the head with that cradle,” Abby snapped. “If I don’t stop what?” Luka questioned, his voice showing that his patience was thinning. “Just stop,” Abby sighed, turning back around and getting back to work.

New update!! ;DChapter 21 Several Days LaterThe entire Kovac gang stood outside the Carter household. Today was Daniel’s 9th birthday, and they were having a cowboy party. Luka eyed Abby apprehensively. This was her first outing since the miscarriage, and Luka was afraid that she wasn’t up to it. She had been highly, even more so than lately, irritable all morning. He had even insisted on taking the children to the party and allowing Abby to have the house to herself. Abby had quickly nixed that idea. The kids were cautious around their mother as well. All of them were handling the news differently, but they were all unhappy. Within the past few weeks they had all gotten a little excited about their new little sister. Lily was extremely vocal about her disappointment, and at first had asked her mother if she could try again. However, Abby hadn’t answered her, and her father said that that was not a good question for now. The other’s had kept their feelings to themselves, because they could tell that their parents were going through a hard time. They never before had seen their parents’ relationship so strained before and it scared them all. The child, however, that seemed to have changed the most since the loss was Lee. He seemed to stay out of trouble and they hadn’t received a call about his bad behaviour all week. In fact, they had gotten a letter from his teacher saying that he had had a great week, not even having to miss recess once. “Hi!” Gamma Carter said as she opened the front door. “Oh! It’s the beautiful family.” Gamma Carter (as she liked to be called) lived in New York, but she always came to Chicago for her grandson’s birthday. And every year, she made a fuss over Luka and Abby’s family and how beautiful they all were and happy they were. “Remind me of all these beautiful children’s names, and yours too,” she said with a wide grin, showing the red lipstick on her teeth. “Abby,” Abby told her with a smile and reaching out to shake Gammas hand. Luka shook his head in amazement; it was like his wife had just morphed back to her normal self. He secretly wondered how long it would last. “And my husband Luka. Then this is Luke, our oldest, and Lexy, and the twins, Lee and Lana, and our youngest, Lily.” Lily twirled as her mother approached her name and exclaimed, “That’s me!” “Aww, you guys are just darling, and I heard you are about to add another sweetie to the group,” she innocently stated. Abby’s smile dropped and she searched for words to say, Luka began to open his mouth, but Lily spoke up. “Not anymore,” Lily said sullenly, “Leah’s in heaven now.” John’s mother looked incredibly sorry and she opened her mouth to speak, but Luka shook his head. “Don’t worry about it, you didn’t know,” he said offering her a small smile. Then he lifted up the gift that was in his hands. “Where does this go?” “Let me show you.” “Lily,” Luka said, handing the package to his youngest, “why don’t you and your brothers and sisters take it inside, your mom and I will be in, in a moment.” As they disappeared into the doorway, Luka turned to his wife. Abby’s eyes were staring into doorbell. Luka sighed. He knew that she should have stayed home. “Let’s go home,” Luka told her. “Susan can bring the kids back home later, or I can come back and pick them up.” “I don’t want to go home,” Abby snapped. “Well, what the f**k do you want Abby?” Luka questioned harshly as he took Abby’s arm. Abby took in a sharp breath and her eyes widened. “I have tried to be patient and I have tried to understand, and I am trying and trying, and you are just….” “What?” Abby bit back. “What am I Luka? Come on.” Luka groaned as he raked his hand through his hair, “I don’t know how to do this Abby,” he said in defeat. “I don’t either,” Abby said blinking back tears. “I’m leaving,” she said turning and beginning to make her way down the stairs. “Wait, where are you going? And how are you getting there?” Luka called after Abby’s quickly moving frame. “I’ll walk,” she murmured. “Where are you going, Abby?” “Anywhere but here.”
