Just one thing I want to remind all of us who are native English speakers/writers: for a lot of our friends on this board English is a second language, and a very difficult language to interpret. When writing in a second language the tone and meaning can be difficult to convey, and doesn't always come out the way it was intended. Just a reminder to consider this when reading/interpreting a post from someone for whom English is a second language. You're so right about this. That is the reason why I often try to stay out of this kind of discussions. Sometimes I just decide not to post anything. Not because I don't have an opinion but because I'm a bit scared to be misinterpreted. This isn't the first discussion caused by misunderstanding or using 'bad English'. And it makes me sad So please, everyone, let's drop it all, and concentrate on 'North Atlantic'.

This will be my last post re: Parenthood.
I watched it, and it was really hard. Spent the whole time thinking of Maura and remembering from the clips how she delivered her lines and interacted with the other actors.
The VERY GOOD: Mae Whitman! She has a very natural acting style that would have been unbelievably good with Maura's own natural style. I just want to cry when I think of the poignant and funny scenes they could have created together. She is just like Maura, able to be funny and sympathetic at the same time. I'm now a fan.
The Good: Peter Krause, Craig T. Nelson, and Monica Potter. Was impressed with Krause, had never seen him in anything. The other two, Nelson and Potter, are good actors, pros who made their characters very believable and who can be both funny and dramatic.
I didn't like: Lauren Graham's acting style. Probably a huge dose of Maura bias, but I don't like her goofy acting style. This was my first time seeing her act in anything, and her ditzy comedy style didn't appeal to me at all. I just couldn't stop comparing the way she delivered the same lines Maura did. Lauren's delivery seemed so "forced" or "cold", like you could tell she wasn't comfortable and it came across as bad acting. With the right material I can see how she would be funny, but her style just isn't for me.
All in all Parenthood isn't bad, but without Maura it's not a show I will watch every week. I will pay more attention to Mae Whitman's career though, she was terrific!

I will pay more attention to Mae Whitman's career though, she was terrific! I just saw an episode of "criminal minds" with her, and she´s really good. I consider Miles Heizer another young actor who may have a great future.

If said anything bad about this show, since Maura's departure, i do apologies, because i have to admit, i really did enjoy this show. I loved the relationships between all the characters, it really reminds me of 'brothers and sisters', and i love that show. I agree with Sissa and littlewonder 'Mae Whitman's' was very good ( but i still think of her as the little girl in 'One fine day' with George Clooney!!) However, my only issue was LC, surprise, surprise!! But for once this has nothing to do with the fact that she took on Maura's roll, as I've learned to except that. My problem was, i didn't like LC her acting at all. I thought her performance was wooden, i didn't gel with her character. The scene in the gas station between her and her son, was obviously supposed to be a tender moment between the two, i felt nothing. It's so apparent that this roll was tailor made for Maura (everything about this character was Maura!!) but maybe in the episodes to came my opinion my change of LC because so far we've only known the pilot as Maura roll. I feel that they could have chosen a better replacement for the part. But aside from this, i liked the show, I'll be watching again next week and more so there are plenty of other characters for me to like!!

It was hard to watch it without Maura, but as I keep saying, she will go on to do AMAZING things, don't worry. When I was watching, I kept thinking about Peter Krause and his Six Feet Under role of Nate and I always had a crush on him, so I am so glad to see him back on television. I will be taping Parenthood every week, so I can at least give it a chance. And hey, if it doesn't make it then at least I know I tried it out. Mae Whitman is awesome! It would have been nice to see her as Maura's daughter.

I watched the pilot and I liked it. I thought Lauren did a good job, as did the rest of the cast. It's impossible to judge a show from the pilot. It'll take at least 4 or 5 episodes for the storylines to pick up and for the actors to gel more, but I'm hopeful.

I forgot the show was on... my bad... I will watch it but I won't have that excitement of looking forward seeing it as Maura was in it... They should have kept and aired the original version of the pilot with Maura in it out of respect....

Television in Review Raked Parenthood: Can Lauren Graham do it? In Lauren Graham, Maura Tierney, Parenthood, Peter Krause on March 3, 2010 PARENTHOOD: 1.01 “The Pilot”
There was much ado about Parenthood. Seriously, if you didn’t see it coming, you clearly did not look at the Internet (well, at least TV sites) for the last year, and you didn’t watch NBC for the last few months. Especially not during the Olympics.
There were ads everywhere. Let’s just say that this was the show NBC has been banking on. It was originally slated for the fall, actually, but when Maura Tierney was unable to be a part of it anymore, they had to push it back and put Mercy in its place.
So did it live up to what NBC promised? That, I’m not sure. It was the long-awaited return of Lauren Graham (well, long-awaited for some), but really, it had a stellar cast. But my thought? I wish I didn’t know that Maura Tierney was originally the one in Graham’s role because this role was made for Maura Tierney.
I’m not saying that Graham didn’t do a good job. She did alright. But the problem was, both in her look and the way she portrayed Sarah, I just saw Lorelai Gilmore. Sure, she might not have talked as fast, but it was still there. Every line out of her mouth, I just envisioned Tierney saying it. And Tierney–imagination Tierney–was so much better. Tierney has the age. She has the look. She has the tone. I couldn’t see Graham angry or upset. She was just…Lorelai.
And my fear is that the show is really going to focus on her. I mean, she’s one of the main stars, right?
What I really want to see more of (and I’m sure we will) is her older brother, played by Peter Krause. Now that is a great storyline. As a child, how do you play a character that has aspergers? How do you even grasp that? But more so, as parents, how do you deal with it?
Well, that’s what this show is really going to show us, which hopefully it will do successfully. I’m completely enthralled by that storyline. Less so with everyone else. Is that wrong?
I suppose we just haven’t quite learned enough about the other characters yet to really be invested, but right now, it just sounds like another Brothers and Sisters, this time without as much melodrama. I’m not saying that I’m not going to give it a chance. I certainly am. I’ll watch it for another week, but it will certainly have to give me something unique–something that goes beyond its ABC competitor and Gilmore ancestry–to keep me going.
That’s pretty much the short and sweet of it. I’m not saying it was bad. It certainly has room to grow. We certainly got a decent start last night, at least with Krause’s storyline. But for a show that’s based in an advertising campaign that makes us feel like we understand parenthood, we need more that’s truly relatable, heartfelt, and new to keep it going. (I mean, do people really still get extended family together for softball games and dinners? Do children really land themselves in jail with no repurcussions? Can you relate to this version of parenthood yet?)
While I may mock NBC, I do have faith that this might be the show it wants it to be. I just wonder if losing Tierney really was the one thing the show couldn’t afford to lose.

Well, thanx Sissa for the excellent article. I downloaded PH EP and all I can wish the cast of the show is "good luck." I think theý need it and I hope the writers focus on other characters stories to save the show. Unless MT guest stars, I have no business watching PH. In relation to the intensity of Sarah's lines all I have to say is: shallow, shallow...

I feel that way too - like I wish I never knew that it was hers first, because I will always think of it as her role, no matter how long the show lasts for. I see Lauren but in my head I keep thinking that is what Maura should say.

Thanks for posting that article, sissa. I was feeling nostalgic, so I watched the old Parenthood promos, the ones with Maura, and now I feel so sad. I was so looking forward to having my weekly fix of Maura, and now the role has been given away, and I'll have to deal with just guests spots on "Rescue Me", assuming she does any more (though it is rumored that she will). I'm not really that fond of her character on that show, however, and even if I was it doesn't make up for her not being in Parenthood. I really like how the article puts it: "I just wonder if losing Tierney really was the one thing the show couldn’t afford to lose." I feel the same way, which is sad because I think this show could have been really good. I like Lauren Graham, but she just did not really fill in for Maura in this instance.

Thanks for the article Sissa. I still feel a little sad sometimes that Maura couldn't play that role in Parenthood anymore. It's just the way it is right now, but I had love to see her in Parenthood.

'Gilmore girl' grows upLauren Graham plays with the adults on ‘Parenthood’ By ROBERT RORKE - March 7, 2010 ... The second upset came a few months later when, on July 10, series star Maura Tierney was diagnosed with breast cancer. “Parenthood” was pushed back to midseason and its Wednesday night slot was filled by the middling medical drama “Mercy.” Things got worse in September, when Tierney, also 44, announced that she was leaving the show to better accommodate her treatment schedule. “Parenthood” has a large ensemble cast of seasoned actors, everyone from familiar TV faces such Peter Krause and Craig T. Nelson to folks such as Peter Krause and Craig T. Nelson to folks you haven’t seen in a while, like Bonnie Bedelia. Tierney had name recognition from her long tenure as Abby Lockhart on “ER.” She would be hard to replace. Helen Hunt, a “Mad About You” star before she won as Oscar for “As Good As It Gets,” seemed like a good solution, but talks fell through. ... All of Tierney’s scenes had to be reshot in the pilot. “The whole situation was very unusual,” Graham says. “The cast didn’t know what was going to happen. It was difficult. I think they’d waited a long time and to have movement [was good]. It just had to move forward. I looked at it as: can I do this part? Mainly, do I connect to this job?” ... I posted the whole article at Maura´s archive luby.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=gotopost&board=aiarchive&thread=4667&post=163866
