Honestly I think your coment is rather rude. (even if I'm not a Iavana fan, you're sirious beeing rude to her and Goran) and also the coment is ridiculous. I was raised in a German/ British home and born in Brasil. I have no accents to speak Portuguese (or English or German) at all, my parents do as a matter of fact my father speaks Portuguese worse than Goran speaks English and this did not influence in my speaking Portuguese or German or even English with an accent. Nor do my brothers. A child learns the language from their school (anyone who works with kids, like I do knows this) I know this as I work with kids here in Germany. I have kids from Brasil and from England who speak zero German, whose parents speak zero of German when they come here and the kids end up speaking German with no accent at all, some actually teach their parents to speak better. I am sure if they did adopt a child in the US there would be no language problem. And I can bet the kid would end up teaching them better english. (But like I posted before I don't believe these rumors are true) Nina sorry but you're out of track there. If what you said was true than I guess all my friends ( who had the same sort of raising as I) and I would have problems speaking any of our laguages. And if you don't believe it, please come over and hear us talking. everybody has the right to say their own opinion, there's really no need to attack nina like that, you need to calm down..

I second Lucia and Maggie's comment on that one. Lubyjoe I know you're new to the board, so I think it's important for you to know, that we want to keep the forum clean of arguments. If you disagree with someone else, please try to be careful with the words you use to show your disagreement, so the other person won't think you're offending her. No coment is ridiculous here. We've all the right to say what we think, even if others differ from us. On the other hand, you can always use Private Messages, if you actually think the person is being too rude. RoRy.

I'm gonna have to agree with lubbyjoe on this one. Goran and Ivana's respective accents have absolutely no merit on their parenting skills and I think it is rather insulting that it should even be an issue.
I speak four languages as well - two of them coincidentally being German and Portuguese. English is definitely my strongest language followed by Spanish, then Portuguese and German. I attribute this to having lived the most years in the US and then subsequently living a lesser amount of time in Spanish speaking countries and the least amount of time in Brasil. My German is mediocre as I only ever learned it from my mother and haven't actually lived in Germany. Interestingly enough, Spanish was my dominant language for much of my childhood but now I am more confident in English.
Language development in children is very complex however children are incredibly versatile and can pick up languages much more easily than adults can. We are all born with the ability to learn any and all languages. If a child is raised in a simultaneously multilingual environment there is absolutely no reason for them to have any problems whatsoever. On the contrary - learning poorly is much more beneficial than not learning at all for there is evidence to suggest that learning more than one language is very beneficial in the long run - even if it is lost in childhood - for it can aid in any subsequent future attempts to learn a new language. Generally speaking, the longer a person remains monolingual, the harder it will be if they decide to try and learn a new language.
My father, though very articulate and fully fluent, speaks English with an undeniably obvious accent, however to this day, I cannot for the life of me imitate a decent latin accent. Similarly, there are scores of second generation Americans who do not speak accents. This is because accents are generally not inherited, though speech patterns can be copied by proximity (ie - ebonics.) Accents are the result of "language transfers" when a person uses the rules from one language while speaking in another. But if a child is bilingual from the start there is no issue with the dominance or preference of one language over the other.
Learning English is practically unavoidable if a child is raised in the US. The more likely problem would be that the child not learn Croatian as fluently.
That being said - this rumor is a total hoax. I don't buy it at all. If they were to adopt it would be much realistic for them to do so from Croatia.

And nobody is attacking nobody here. I'm just expressing my opinion, and I have rights to do so. I'm working with kids. All kinds of kids. And I know what I am saying from my own experience. I believe it's extremely hard to raise a child bilingual, and i admire parents who did so, are are doing so. And as larue said, it's very courageous. I respect both Ivana and Goran enough not to say that they couldn't do so. I'm just saying it would be hard. And I really wish this whatever can stop now. In the end, They WOULD and WILL make amazing parents. That's all that matters. And then, 'Lukaisms' are really not a big deal. Because you can pick up language at school, abut you can't pick up good manners and good heart. And I'm 100% sure that when they do decide to have a baby, they will give their best. I'm really sorry I caused all of this. Maybe I'm to immature to talk about something like this. Or maybe it's just the fact that I am living in a different environment. I didn't want to say anything mean or rude. But i think i failed at it. I hope my apology is enough.

*tsk tsk* Girl, I'm not talking about your argument about kids and accents (that's another issue which I think it's valid), I was talking about the phrase you used to refer to nina's comment.
Ok, it's not an attack but it seems to me you overreacted a lil'...and i'm not the only one who thinks the same.

Okay, I'm putting this fire out. Nobody meant any offense, IMO...lubbyjoe and Bel both make valid points, and I have the impression Nina (correct me if I'm wrong) may have intended her comment differently than it came out. I know my little Croat is all for multi-lingual kids, little prodigy she is speaks nine or ten of 'em. Dare i say...things may have been lost in translation?
Anywho, the whole rumor is crap. So let's just move on.

Hey, a dollar is a lot to a poor college student. That's six packets of Ramen noodles...one can of tomato soup...a diet coke...a bag of pretzels...or *gasp* a one-dollar scratch-off ticket to win millions of dollars!

Maggie, i'm sorry to say this, but you would earn only $12 a year.
