CHAPTER 1: “HE WOULD HAVE LOVED HER”
Abby gave the teen a warm smile as the girl gazed tenderly at the baby in her arms. It was a beautiful scene, a scene she was familiar with.
“Is she going to be okay?” She followed Coburn out of the room.
“Yes, she’s a fighter and so the baby.” Coburn smiled, knowing exactly what kind of thoughts were passing through Abby’s mind. “Go home, Abby. It’s late.”
Abby gave a big sigh.
“Yeah, I guess I should.” She eyed her watch. She was supposed to be out of the hospital 5 hours earlier but then, the teen arrived and she just couldn’t bear to leave the girl alone.
“Night.” She gave Coburn a shy nod and turned around to walk down the hallway.
“Night, Abby. Good work.”
It was raining...Abby caught a glimpse of the frightful weather by the window in the lounge as she freed her silky long hair from a knot… Raining just like that day years ago... Her clothes soaked by the dreadful rain, sticking to her body. It was cold, so cold...
With a shiver, she adjusted her coat over the scrub top she was wearing; printed with creamy little figurines of ducks, pacifiers and safety pins and grabbed her backpack. The photos glued to the inner side of her locker’s door, witnessing all her moves. She stopped for a second to look at the girl, toddler, baby that was the subject of the big collage of images, the only reason in her life that made her want to be a better person...
That night she was cold, in pain and terrified. Her hands and feet were freezing and soaked like the rest of her body. The rain poured down on her with no pity as she walked with difficulty towards the main entrance of the ER in the ambulance bay; her arms protectively wrapped around her protruding stomach...She had walked for so long, for what it seemed an eternity. Exhausted, dizzy and in agonizing pain she made one last huge effort pushing the doors with her entire body.
She stood in the emergency room for a second, whispered for help... and all she could remember later was feeling someone holding her as everything around her turned black.
Abby let out a soft chuckle walking towards the elevator. She was a crazy teen. That day, she had been in active labor long before breakfast and given that Maggie left her alone with Eric for the week, the only thing she managed to do to avoid alarming her brother, was to pretend everything was normal, until contractions peaked. That’s when she decided to send him to sleep over at his best friend’s house. Unaware of what was the reason behind it, Eric accepted and as soon as he was gone, she headed to County General.
With less than a dollar in her pocket and so, unable to take the EL; it took her half an hour to get to the hospital, making short stops to help ease the contractions. She gritted her teeth and leaned on walls, lamp posts, benches so many times... and as obstinate as she only could be, she never asked for help.
All she could remember was the time when she opened her eyes.
She was lying on an upper body raised bed wearing a hospital gown, her legs were lifted and held apart and an IV was attached to her finger. The room was crowded with people; nurses, doctors, beeping sounds...
“HALEH! DID YOU PAGE COBURN?!”A Doctor screamed across the room to a nurse who was adjusting a blood pressure cuff on her arm.
“Dr. Morgensten; you scream to me like that again and you are going to have to page your mama for help.”
Abby’s blurry eyes didn’t allow her to see well the room around her.
“I’m here!” A woman in lab coat rushed in. “What do we have here?”
“Teenage girl in labor; bp 140 over 90, pulse 110 BPM, completely effaced, dilated to 10 centimeters, contractions are 2 to 3 minutes apart...”
“Hi, I’m Doctor Coburn. Can you tell me your name?” She pulled a couple of gloves on and quickly sat in front of her to check her.
A moan escaped Abby’s lips before she could reply. An intense wave of pain washed her over.
“Abby.” She sniffled, staring blankly at the ceiling above her.
“Abby, how old are you?” Coburn focused on her task.
She was hurting so much that she couldn't think straight. “Sixteen.” She cried. It was the most excruciating pain ever.
Another nurse got close to her. “Is there someone you want us to call, sweetie? Your parents?”
Abby shook her head vehemently. “My mother…” She said with difficulty. “She isn’t home.” She moaned again, beads of sweat building on her forehead.
“Owww!”
“I know it’s hard, but don’t push, Abby.” Coburn eyed the monitor next to the bed. “Have you been going to your pre-natal appointments?”
“Not lately.” She wailed. The intense physical pain rendered her completely in her body.
“Do you do drugs, alcohol?” Coburn pronounced the last words with a certain tone of discomfort.
“Oh please…” Abby broke in tears. “Just help me…”
It had suddenly hit her and it was too much for her. She couldn’t be strong, not anymore. The knot growing in her throat was hurting so much. She was alone, completely alone; her father was gone, her mother was gone, the father of her baby was gone and she was abandoned in the world, lonesome during the most frightening moment of her short life. She was only a girl; a girl having a baby and so not ready for this.
“It’s alright Abby; we are going to help you.” Coburn patted gently one of her legs. “She is ready. Oxygen...”
Lydia, another nurse, placed an oxygen mask on her face.
“I can’t do this alone.” She wept, softly pushing the mask away. “I really can’t.”
Coburn leaned over to look at her with confidence. “You’re not, Abby. We’re all right here, we’re going to help you have this baby.”
Haleh gave her a warm smile as Lydia, tenderly stroked her shoulder.
"As soon as you think you can't do it anymore, you’ll already be done." Coburn gave her a confident smile. “You can do this, I promise.” Coburn winked an eye at her.
There was something in that woman that made Abby feel… somehow sheltered. “Abby, I need you to listen to me very carefully and do as I say, alright? ”
Abby nodded swiftly.
Haleh held Abby’s hand. “You can squeeze it as hard as you need, sweetie.”
“Owww...” She shut her eyes.
“Alright Abby; push as hard as you can.”
And it all began. She had never used her body that way before. All her strength, all her emotions focused in only one thing. It didn’t take long though, someone helped her to lean over a bit, probably Lydia or Haleh; just a second later, she pressure… And then the most painful sensation came. It was overwhelming. Her entire body burned as an involuntary cry of pain escaped her throat. She could hear voices speaking to her, but nothing mattered at all. She couldn’t listen, she couldn’t think straight...and then it was suddenly over. The soft whimpers of a baby filled the room.
“It’s a girl.” Coburn placed the baby on her chest.
“Good job.” Haleh leaned to whisper.
Abby opened her eyes to see the little wriggling bundle on her chest. Her baby was finally there. For so long she had been inside her; poking, swirling, sharing her sadness, joys and fears…and now, she was here.
A perfect little human being; so small, so wonderful. His baby, their baby. Nothing in the world mattered anymore; although he had to leave, a big part of him stayed with her. A rush of emotions wrapped her as her eyes filled with tears. He would have loved her, loved her so much.
“Hi baby.” She said in a whisper.
Abby walked back home protected by the shadow of her umbrella. From the moment her daughter was born, her life changed. And not in the “ordinary” teen-mother way, because not only she was in charge of her baby, but also of her mother and Eric. Her mother’s manic episodes and her refusal to stay on her meds made everything worse. It was hard to tell how on earth she had survived everything, how she had managed to get where she was without giving up...though sobriety was something she had to battle for a long time. She had to credit Coburn for having a good influence on her; otherwise she wouldn’t be the great OB nurse she was…
Would things have been different if he knew the outcome of their love? She stopped before crossing the road. Yes, they probably would. He would have married her, he told her that…that amazing night, surrounded by the dark ocean, under a full bright moon. She never made love like she did that night. There was more than passion, more than love, there was something else that only they would knew…
"I'll marry you if I get you pregnant."
"Luka?...You can't be serious."
"I am."
Abby crossed the street. And she believed him, because she loved him and he loved her…Yeah, right. What would a couple of teens know about love?...No! It was different, they weren’t just a couple of teens having a crush; they were meant for each other...They had barely met that summer and yet, it seemed they had known each other all their lives.
Where could he be right now? Doing what? Would he recall her just the way she always did? Or did he forget her?...Maybe he got married…and he was the good doctor he wanted to be; with a wonderful wife and a happy family.
Abby pressed her lips firmly. But he has a family here too.
A crack of thunder echoed all over the entire city and suddenly, the lights went out. Abby rushed into her building and in just a second, she was in the warm dryness of her apartment closing the door.
A second roll of thunder hit, illuminating the entire place…And like a ghost, a girl in a white nightgown; pale skin, chocolate hair and big hazel eyes framed by dark lashes appeared sitting on the couch scrutinizing her.
“You are late.”
