Just a little chapter. More will come tomorrow
“Those doughnuts are really good.” Jerry licked his fingers and looked at his third helping with awe. “Wonder where Kovac bought them.”
“I wonder why he brought them in the first place.” Frank noted. “It’s the first time he buys treats for everyone.”
“Well maybe he didn’t have time to have breakfast.” Jerry bit happily in this sweet sin and closed his eyes in appreciation.
“I know someone else who didn’t have time to have breakfast this morning.” Haleh pointed at Abby who was coming their way after checking out her fifth patient of the day.
“Oh, that could explain why he insisted that everyone should get one…” Frank added. “The least he could do is to feed her.”
“Feed who?” Abby put the chart down next the computer.
“My neighbor’s cat. He went on vacation.” Haleh looked at a snorting Frank and went on with her explanation. “I called my husband and told him that he needed to go over and feed her. I forgot to do this morning.”
“Oh! Well someone should feed me too. I’m starving.” She looked around on the Admit counter. “Are there by chance some doughnuts left?”
“Nope.” Jerry looked guiltily at her as he was finishing the last one. “Sorry…”
“We could go to the cafeteria and get something there.” Haleh proposed. “I forgot my lunch too.”
“Lucky for you, your head seems firmly attached…” Abby chuckled. “Nah, I don’t feel like going there today. But we could go to the Jumbo Market and get some sandwiches. Some of them are really nice.”
“Sure, let’s go. It’s been ages since we last had a little luncheon just the two of us.”
“Yeah… Give a sec, I’ll get my coat.” Abby hurriedly left and rushed to the lounge.
“So I guess time is ready for a little interrogation.” Frank wondered with a smirk. “I hope you’ll keep us informed.”
“Trust me, I’ll share that information with the whole hospital.” Haleh was smiling widely. “Poor little thing seems really tired. As a good friend, I have the moral obligation to inquire about her health.”
“But of course.” Frank nodded. Abby quickly came back.
“Let’s go, I could eat a horse.” Haleh laughed at her little remark and they both left the hospital.
“So how are you feeling?” The nurse wondered after a little while. “Chuny told me you were ill last night. You left so quickly and I didn’t even get the chance to say goodnight.”
“Yeah… I was… feeling a little queasy.” She answered uneasily. “But it’s all settled now. I just wanted to go home and relax…”
“Oh honey, you don’t look relaxed.” Haleh remarked. “It must have been pretty bad. Did you get any sleep at all?”
“Not much but… Why is everyone grilling me today?” She wondered suddenly.
“We’re concerned about you. You had some rough weeks at work. I don’t want my favorite doctor to neglect her health.”
“I’m sorry. I’m just a little cranky I guess.” Abby smiled as she played with her turtleneck. “Nothing a good night’s sleep won’t cure.”
“What was that?” Haleh’s eyes had shot open. She had been pretty sure she had seen something on her friend’s neck.
