Hahaha. Yeahs Maggie. But you’re hot so it’s ok. And you satisfy my need to reaaaad things. Yes.
This updatearoo is in two parts. Yeah it is. So um yeah. Lets do this shizzle.
PART UNO
Abby had convinced herself she was only nervous because of Richard. She had convinced herself that the tight knot in her stomach was nothing to do with the “shrink” she was about to see. Nothing to do with having to remember the past, nothing to do with having to have a reason. Nothing to do with trusting someone with all your deepest thoughts and insecurities. Nothing to do with it being not a person, but a stranger. Abby shook her head a little, and told herself to stop being stupid, she knew about these things, she wouldn’t have to say anything, just she felt fine and off she goes, great. Sorted.
It was those damned waiting rooms again. This time the blank white walls covered in stupid pictures of smiling clowns and sunflowers. Abby imagined the irony of someone coming there to receive therapy for their fear of clowns. She thought of Dave. It made her smile and forget her troubles for a moment. Then the door slammed making her jump, her stomach did a back flip and landed back in the same tangled disarray it had been for the past few weeks… Even months. She turned her gaze to the clock, and watched it intently, it’s enraging clicks never desisting. She tapped her foot in time with it. Her body had been irritating her lately, not doing as it was told. This gave her another amusing mental image, of her head yelling at the body as it ran about the apartment waving its arms at the spot where it’s head should have been…
“Abigail Lockhart, we’re ready for you to come through.”
She suddenly felt quite sick. A cold rush flew up her spine. She had the sudden urge to run right out of there, but her legs carried her across the ridiculously decorated waiting room and into a small room, a large leafy plant in the corner. The lady sat behind the desk was very thin and tiny, really tiny, she looked as if she might be picked up and blown away with a gust of wind. She had short grey hair and wore large blue beads. Her eyes were the most noticeable thing about her, they were large and oval shaped, but seemed to be smiling, even though she herself wasn’t. They were a bright piercing blue.
“Hello Abigail. I’m Helen Brooke. It’s nice to meet you.” She extended a hand and Abby shook it hesitantly.
“It’s uh.. Abby, actually.” She said with a nervous smile. Helen nodded.
“Alright then Abby.” There was a long pause. Too long. Abby’s gaze was stuck to the floor, determined not to say much.
“Why do you think you’re here today Abby?” Helen asked gently. Abby brought her eyes back up to Helen’s. She drew in a deep breath and breathed out. She smiled wryly.
“Had a free appointment.” She said simply. To her surprise Helen laughed. Abby felt a little more relaxed.
“Had much on your mind recently?” she asked with a smile.
“That obvious?” Abby replied.
“Want to tell me about it?” Helen pushed, Abby retreated straight back again, almost like a trainer breaking in a foal.
“Not particularly.” Helen smiled again.
“Alright. All in your own time. Is there anything you would like to discuss with me?” Abby sighed.
“Other than where I can call for a cab round here after this session. I need to get somewhere.”
Helen nodded. “That can be sorted. Where are you going?” Abby took a long pause and gave a sigh and smiled, she might as well throw the woman a bone, she was looking at her through such “understanding” and “caring” eyes.
“Well, I need to go to the police station.” Another pause. “Seeing as they caught my ex-husband, I need to identify him, give in anything I still had that belonged to him. I found an expired passport in the bottom of one of my old boxes, and an old credit card.”
Helen nodded slowly. She knew Abby’s history, and decided to stay away from this topic for now, she dealt with clients even less willing than Abby, she knew how to handle this one. “Who is it you live with?” Helen asked.
Abby sighed. “My daughter Karen…” Abby smiled a little involuntarily. “She’s a great kid, puts up with a lot… I have no idea what I’d have done without her all this time…” Helen smiled.
“Anyone else?”
“Well…” Abby hesitated. Then went ahead again, Luka was certainly a difficult issue. “Well, of course there’s Luka. He’s my…” she paused again. What was Luka? A roomie? Boyfriend? Significant other? She knew what rolled off her tongue easiest. But there was no way in hell she’d say it in front of some shrink. After all. He wasn’t her husband. “My partner I guess…” she decided on. Helen glanced up at her.
“You… Don’t want him to be?” Abby jumped slightly, she wasn’t even sure why, the thought of going without Luka now just. Didn’t fit. It just. Didn’t seem right.
“No, no, of course I do.” she said straight away. “I love him.” She added simply. Helen smiled. Then she realised what she had just said, and panicked slightly, she had never said this too her own… Significant other. Yet she’d just admitted it to Helen Brooke. The damned sneaky witch, Abby thought.
“Have you told him that?” Helen asked, Abby glanced up at her, and narrowed her eyes slightly, how the hell did she know that? She hadn’t realised her reaction had been so obvious. There was little point in saying ‘yes’ now. She shook her head.
“Why is that?” Helen asked her. Abby glanced at the clock, yes, time was up, it was all ok, and she didn’t need to answer that question.
“I’m really sorry, but I really should be getting going…” Helen nodded and noticed it was half time, she glanced down at the book, yes, it was just half an appointment booked.
“It was nice talking to you Abby… If you like, you have another half an hour free, just remember to call up. Anytime you like. Here’s my number…” Abby stood up, and looked straight at Helen, she wasn’t that bad, really. Abby took the number and they shook hands again.
“Thanks…” said Abby with a faint smile. Helen gave her a warm smile back. Abby was just headed out the door when;
“Hey Abby?”
Abby turned at the door glancing over her shoulder.
“Yeah?”
“Think about, what you want… What you really want Abby.” Abby locked eyes with Helen, neither flinching. Abby’s mouth twitched into the tiniest smile. She gave a curt nod. With that, she left, to finally face something that had plagued her long enough. This was it. She needed to do it this time. Alone.
