It was two weeks later, Luka had been so supportive for her and she would miss him so much. She was so nervous and scared about everything, just the thought of seeing her mother again made her stomach tie in knots. Everything had finally been sorted, Luka had insisted he come on the flight with her, as pregnant women were not supposed to fly at more than seven moths and if she did go into premature labour she would need someone there who could deliver a baby. She had argued her case but failed miserably, secretly she was glad to have him with her, but she was terrified she was getting used to depending on him, and she knew that depending on people was dangerous, yet she always seemed to melt when she was around him, it was like when he looked at her, he could see through her anyway, so what was the point in lying?
Luka watched her as she sat, hands folded over her belly, back ridged, in fact, her whole body was ridged, her brow was furrowed and she was chewing her lip, a nervous habit. He drew breath to speak, then blew it out again, if the truth be known he was nervous too, and bitterly disappointed that he wouldn’t be seeing her anymore, he was starting to get chocked up so he stood up quickly.
“I’m… Just going to check the plane times again… Ours should be boarding soon…”
He wondered over too the screens where all the numbers and plane times were printed. ‘Chicago to Mini Appeles – Gate 9: 20:30’ he read, he checked his watch, five minutes. He figured considering she was pregnant they would board her just before. He walked back over too her slowly, offering her a gentle smile.
“Hey… Time to get on the plane..” he spoke softly, she looked up at him without saying anything and nodded, her throat was completely dry, she took another swig of her bottled water but it seemed to make her want to gag. Luka offered her his hand and she held her back, it was killing her, she slowly made her way out of her seat and stood up, rubbing the bottom of her spine, her features contorting slightly with discomfort. Luka felt his heart ache as she did this and wrapped his arm round her shoulder’s so she wouldn’t have to walk far, she looked exhausted. The air flight attendant smiled at them, and wrinkled her nose to the other as they walked past giving her a look that obviously said ‘Aww, aren’t they cute?’ They got seated and watched the other passengers get on board, they weren’t many at all. The plane took off on time and with no complications. Abby shifted uncomfortably in her seat, re-arranging her bags underneath her, sorting out the seat pocket in front of her, trying to make herself comfy. Luka watched all this, mildly entertained, she just looked so cross at the chair she was sitting in, eventually she stopped, and leant her head back against the rest sighing in frustration. She felt lousy, if not for all the emotional reasons, because everything was sore and she hadn’t felt comfortable for the last seven months. She felt so much like crying like a little kid, but just turned her head to Luka catching him watching at her.
“Don’t laugh…” she started to say as a smile spread across her face, the situation felt so crazy, she suddenly felt like laughing. It was a hollow, empty laugh, Luka’s face turned serious. Then he smiled again.
“Want a massage?... When my wife was pregnant I used to do them every evening…” he paused, a smile pulling at his mouth. “She once got a group of her friends together who were all pregnant at the time, to show them my ‘magic’” he shook his head and smiled at the fondness of the memory. Abby smiled too, she loved it when Luka told her about his wife and family, it was like he was sharing a secret with her, and she loved seeing how much he cared for her, and loved realising that people were capable of caring for each other that much. It made her wonder if she ever truly had loved Richard or if it had all been in her imagination. Or perhaps just a wish. She got lost slightly in her thoughts before smiling and nodding.
“Well, I’ll have to take your wife’s word for it…” she said, this alone brought a smile to Luka’s face, one she loved seeing as it was the one specially reserved for the ones he loved. She turned so her back was towards him and he started to delicately put pressure on her shoulders, circling it to her neck then down her spine to the base of her back, she closed her eyes and sighed in satisfaction. His hands felt amazing, she grinned.
“Mmm this is better than sex.” she stated looking back at him with a grin; Luka smiled back, his heart secretly leapt. He knew she wasn’t intending it to be a serious comment but it made his smile all the same. He carried on like this for a further twenty minutes.
“Better?” he asked. Abby nodded, feeling completely relaxed, refusing to let herself think about what was going to be there for her when she landed. She yawned, she hadn’t gotten much sleep recently and she was feeling it. Luka noticed. He viewed the empty window seat and then smiled.
“I have an idea.” He stated flashing a smile, Abby looked confused.
“Huh?” she asked.
“Just wait a second..” he leant over and pulled up the armrests on both sides of them. Then took off his coat, and grabbed hers too. “Ok. Now, you should get some rest, you can lie out flat now…” Abby looked at his and raised her eyebrows slightly, and then her expression relaxed into a grateful smile.
“Thanks.” She said as she drew her legs up on the seat. Luka folded up her coat and placed it on his lap. He picked up his own coat and placed it over her, making sure it was covering her whole body. She looked at him for another moment.
“Thank you. Really you have no idea how much… I… Thank you so much.” She stumbled. Luka stroked her hair and nodded.
“It’s fine.” Abby smiled and nodded, Luka put his hand on her shoulders, stroking her hair and the top of her arm rhythmically, she felt so warm tucked up with his again, it reminded her of the night she’d found out, so much. She closed her eyes and was soon sound asleep. Luka watched her and swept the strands of hair from her face. As people passed them on their way to the toilet he remembered all those months ago the way that elderly couple had looked at them, and the way he hadn’t said anything, only smiled back, and he wondered why now, he kept looking back at these people going past, and just gave them that same smile, he started chewing his knuckle again nervously, he knew soon things were going to be completely different, and there was a churning feeling of dread in the pit of his stomach.
