Chapter 34: The Meeting
When lunch was over Abby and Luka said good bye to all of their friends and they went to their hotels. Abby’s father stayed behind and they were going to take him to see the twins. They decided to walk all the way home even though it was a very long walk.
“How are the twins?” Charles asked as they walked out of the restaurant.
“They’re pretty good. They have been great babies, though the first month was rough, especially with two of them.” Abby said.
“So, tell me about you two.” Charles said.
“Well, let’s see…” Abby said, trying to figure out where she should start.
“We met when Abby was a nurse. We dated for almost a year and then we broke up and that was mostly my fault.” Luka started for her.
“Yeah, that was a long story, well then I became a doctor about four years ago and I realized I was still in love with Luka, but I didn’t want to tell him because he was with someone else.” Abby began, knowing where she was.
“Yeah, but that didn’t work out to great and then I realized I was in love with Abby and not this other nurse and we had a fight one night, and I kissed her.” Luka said.
“Then I found out I was pregnant and I told him…I didn’t know whether or not I wanted to keep it, at the time it was it and not them. But then I realized this was the man I wanted to be with for the rest of my life and I loved him so I wanted the baby, well babies.” Abby said.
“Yeah, and I thought that she didn’t want to get married just because she was pregnant, so I decided to wait until after the babies were born to ask her, and when I did, she said yes.” Luka said.
“Wow, that was nice,” Charles said.
“Yup, here we are, I’m thirty-three and he’s thirty-four, and now finally, after we knew we loved each other for so long, we are finally getting married.” Abby said.
“Well, I can’t wait to see the little babies,” Charles said.
“Yeah, I can’t wait for you to meet them either,” Abby said.
“So what do you do now?” Abby asked him after a while.
“Well, I’m into insurance and stuff like that. Boring world.” Charles said. “I doubt it’s as cool as being a doctor.”
“Ha, that’s funny. Being a doctor is not as cool as you think it is.” Abby said. They made small talk all the way back to the house and then when they got inside Luka introduced his father to Charles.
Luka and Abby led Charles up to their room, where Josip had put the babies down for their nap, but he said that he heard them, and they should be up. When Abby walked into the room, she saw two little things squirming around in the crib. Abby went over and picked up Joshua and Luka picked up Shelly. They walked over to Charles and introduced them.
“Okay, this is Joshua,” Abby said pointing to Joshua, “and that is Shelly,” she said pointing to Shelly.
“They are beautiful,” Charles said, stroking Shelly’s cheek.
“Do you want to hold her?” Luka asked.
“Of course! That would be great, and it would mean so much to me to get to know them.” Charles said.
“I want you to dad. I always wished you were there for me, but now I think that it’s better that you can be there for them.” Abby said as Luka handed over Shelly and he sat down on the chair. Then Abby handed him Joshua and he sat there for a long while just looking at them. Luka and Abby stayed there watching him for the longest time and then he said, “Thank you.”
“For what?” Abby asked.
“For letting me in your life again.” Charles said.
“I’m so happy to finally be able to do that.” Abby said and went over to hug him. He handed her Shelly and he got up and handed Luka, Joshua.
“They are so precious. They look like both of you.” Charles said.
“Thanks, we get that a lot.” Luka said.
“Well, if you need a baby sitter, you can call me. I would love to watch these little ones.” Charles said.
“Where do you live?” Abby asked.
“I’m living in Minnesota again, but now I was thinking about moving back to Chicago because of you.” Charles said.
“Really?” Abby asked.
“Yeah, you were the one thing out of my life that I couldn’t find, I talked to Eric right before this too and he thinks that your mom and him will move back too, just to be closer to you and the babies.” Charles said.
“Wow, that’s news to me, but I guess that could be nice, having family around.” Abby said. Luka smiled and gave her a kiss on the forehead.
“Well, I guess I’ll get going, I’ll see you guys tomorrow.” Charles said.
“Ok, bye dad,” Abby said.
“Bye,” Luka said.
“Thank you Luka,” Abby said, once again.
“For what?” Luka asked.
“For finding him.” Abby said, as she leaned in for a much deeper kiss.
