Chapter 14: The Phone Call
Abby was still fast asleep, when Luka got back from dropping Maggie off at the hospital. Luka did not want to bother her, so he went into the kitchen and brought some of the bags and boxes in there. Luka started setting up the swings, since the babies’ would probably use that first, before the highchairs. Luka opened the box and he began to put it together when he heard Abby getting up. She came into the kitchen and said to him, “Why didn’t you wake me up? And where is my mom?”
“I thought you could use the sleep, and your mom is at the hospital, she wanted to visit Josh.” Luka said to her.
“Oh, ok. Thank you for letting me sleep though. I really did need that. I feel so refreshed now.” Abby said.
“No problem,” Luka said.
“Well I am going to go sterilize the pump thingy and start pumping for the night.” Abby said.
“Ok, baby.” Luka said.
Abby sterilized the pump and began to pump. When she was done with about four bottles, it was fast seeing that Shelly probably would only drink about two ounces every feeding, the phone rang. Luka went to go pick it up and said, “Oh, hi Maggie.”
“What’s wrong?” Luka said.
“I sensed that something was wrong with Josh, so I went to go get one of the nurses.” Maggie said.
“What happened?” Luka asked her, tears welling up in his eyes.
“They had to put him back on the vent because he stopped breathing.” Maggie told him.
“Oh my gosh! I guess Abby and I will be over shortly then.” Luka said.
“Bye.” Maggie said.
“Bye.” Luka said.
“What’s wrong, Luka?” Abby asked him, she was starting to panic.
“That was your mom, she said that they had to put Josh back on the ventilator. She thought that something was wrong so she called the nurses and they realized that he stopped breathing.” Luka told her, he started crying.
“Luka! How could this happen to us? Why?” Abby started crying now. Luka went over to her and put his arms around her.
“It’s ok, Abby. Let’s go see him. He’s a strong little boy. I’ll go get Shelly, you get some bottles, and her diapers and stuff. Then we can go.”
“Ok, Luka.” Abby said.
Luka went upstairs and into the nursery to get Shelly. She was still sleeping and Luka really did non want to wake her up so he moved her very slowly and gently and put her in her carrier that Abby left upstairs. To his surprise, Shelly didn’t wake up. Luka strapped her in and carried the carrier downstairs. Abby was packed and all ready to go. Luka used his free hand to pull her into him and he kissed her forehead. Luka grabbed her hand and they walked out the door.
Luka pulled into the lot at the hospital and got Shelly’s carrier out of the base. He lifted it up and helped Abby out. They walked towards the elevator and pushed number seven. When the elevator doors opened, Abby said, “I don’t know if I can do this Luka. I don’t like seeing him like this.”
“I don’t either, but we have to be strong, strong for our little boy.” Luka said, and with that, they got out of the elevator and walked toward the NICU.
When Abby walked through the doors her mother came toward her and took her hand. Abby was terrified to look at her son. Maggie sensed her fear and said, “It’s ok Abby, it’s ok. They said it was the medicine they gave him.”
“What?” Abby said, “The medicine they gave him, that’s bull.”
Abby walked over to Dr. Coburn and asked her, “What’s wrong with him?”
“Well, it’s a really long story and don’t worry, I will tell you the whole story. One of our new nurses was working on Josh and she realized that had the wrong IV push in his IV. She ran over to him and he had already stopped breathing. Maggie had already come to get us though, and we beat her to him. She stood over and watched us work. We gave him CPR and bagged him through it, but we had to put him back on the vent. He should be able to come off of the vent tomorrow though.” Dr. Coburn explained.
“How sure are you that he will be able to come off the vent, though, how sre can you possibly be?” Abby asked practically screaming.
“Abby…calm down. What happened?” Luka said, rushing over to her side to comfort her.
“Ask Dr. Coburn. I really don’t want to go through this again.” Abby said as she walked away.
“What happened?” Luka asked her.
Dr. Coburn told him the same story and he did just as Abby and stormed away. He went by Abby and looked at her. She looked at him and said, “See, what did I tell you. How the hell could this happen? How stupid can they be? Why would they let a new nurse come near our son?” Abby asked Luka.
“I don’t know Abby, I don’t know.” Luka said.
Shelly started crying and Maggie said, “I’ll get her.”
“Thanks, mom,” Abby said “she’s probably hungry, there’s a bottle in the bag.”
“Ok.” Maggie said simply.
Luka took Maggie and Shelly home that night. Abby stayed with Josh at the hospital. “Are you sure you can watch her tonight?” Luka asked her.
“I’m sure. Abby has ten bottles here. I doubt that we will need more than that. And don’t worry Luka I am on my meds. Id anything happens or I need you for some specific reason I’ll call you.”
“Ok, thanks Maggie.” Luka said.
“No problem, not at all.” Maggie said.
About six hours later, Abby and Luka sat around Josh. Abby sat on Luka’s lap in the rocking chair and was beginning to fall asleep. Luka put his arms around her and rocked her, just like a baby. They both fell asleep and awoke the next morning at around nine. He smiled at her as she looked at him. Then she smiled back and looked at Josh, his tiny little body, and all the machines attached to him.
Dr. Coburn came over suddenly and said, “We’re going to try and extubate him now.”

I guess doctor's are very rich.. They just buy houses like that ^^ Well not exactly.. Anyways, the house sounds gorgeous!
Abby and Luka just so in love and everything (almost everything) is okay. I think they deserve all of this, the past hasn't been so good.. And their little ER mascot will be okay soon, will he?

Chapter 15: Luka’s Anger
Abby grabbed Luka’s hand in anticipation of what would happen next with their child. Abby was extremely terrified and could not bare to watch them extubate. Luka put him arm around her as he saw the tears being to well up in her eyes. He held her tight and whispered to her in her ear, “Don’t worry, I’m here.”
Abby looked up at Luka and looked into his deep blue eyes, she smiled and then she felt the tears rolling down her cheeks. Luka wiped them away with his thumb and held her closer. Dr. Coburn began to pull the tube out. Then, the tube was out and Abby and Luka heard something that they really wanted to hear: they heard Josh cry; well they heard him cry again. Abby smiled and then Luka kissed her.
Dr. Coburn turned to Abby and Luka and said, “We are very sorry for what happened, and we take full responsibility. We are going to pay for his stay at the hospital as a gift to you for our mistakes.”
“Is this so we won’t sue you?” Abby asked.
“Well, no.” Dr. Coburn replied.
“Well, to me, it sounds like it is. We should sue you. How could something that simple, giving our son an IV push be so difficult? How could a nurse give our son the wrong medicine? What is so hard about giving the right medicine to the right patients?” Luka asked her, beginning to get angry.
“Like I said, we are very sorry.” Dr. Coburn said.
“Well, I know it wasn’t your fault because the on-call resident told me that you weren’t here when it happened.” Abby said.
“Yes, I know, when I heard I rushed over from the second floor.” Dr. Coburn said.
“Well, I think we’re going to file a malpractice suit against this part of the hospital. In the NICU you should be paying the most attention to the babies. Look what happened! Look what happened to our son! How do you know that he doesn’t have brain damage or anything like that?” Luka continued, anger bubbling up.
“We’re very sorry, Luka. Mistakes happen, you should know that.” Dr. Coburn said.
“Well, I don’t really care what you say, I’m going to file a malpractice suit!” Luka said.
Dr. Coburn turned away and left Abby and Luka with Josh. Josh was squirming around and crying. Abby still couldn’t feed him, though, he was still on an IV and some medication for his lungs.
Abby and Luka stayed until about two o’clock and then decided to go home to Shelly. Maggie probably had enough of her and deserved a break.
Luka and Abby got into the car and Luka started driving. He pulled up to the car and noticed that Abby had fallen asleep. She really didn’t sleep well last night. He could feel her moving around on top of his lap. He guessed she was having a difficulty getting comfortable. Luka got out of the car, opened her door and unbuckled her seat belt. Then, he picked her up and closed the door. He started walking up the walkway and she opened her eyes. She looked up at him and smiled, “Thank you.” was all she said. Then she put her head on his shoulder and he opened the door.
As Luka walked into the door, he heard Shelly crying. He put Abby down and began to look for Maggie. He found her in the kitchen. She was holding Shelly and rocking her back and forth. “Hi,” she said.
“Hi,” Luka said, “How was it?”
“Oh, it was ok, but she kept getting up every three hours to eat and poop.” Maggie said.
“Ugh…sorry mom.” Abby said.
“It was no problem.” Maggie said. “Anytime you guys need me to watch them I’ll be here. So how is Josh?”
“Doing better,” Luka said as he went over to Maggie and took a crying Shelly from her arms. “How many bottles are left?” Abby asked.
“Just two.” Maggie said.
“Ok, well I better go get some more, did you already sterilize the bottles?” Abby asked her.
“Yes I did, Abby.” Maggie replied.
“Ok, well I’ll be back.” Abby said.
Luka went upstairs and into the nursery to put Shelly into her crib. She fell asleep in his arm just a couple of minutes ago. She was so peaceful when she slept. When he finally settled her down and made sure the blankets were right, he went into their bedroom and found Abby on the bed, pumping.
“Hey,” he said.
“Hi.” Abby said.
“Is it weird doing that thing?” Luka asked her.
Abby laughed and looked at him. “Yeah, I guess. And…um…Luka, are we really going to file a malpractice suit?”
“Yeah, I think we are.” Luka said.
“Oh…well ok.” Abby replied.
“Oh! You forgot to get something at the store!” Luka said.
“What? What did I forget this time?” Abby asked him.
“Well you forgot the bassinets.” Luka said.
“Oh, well can you go out and get them? And can you get a playpen too?” Abby asked him.
“Yeah sure. What colors do you want?” Luka asked her.
“Well, I guess a blue bassinet and a lilac bassinet, and the lilac and blue playpen, it matches the swings.” Abby told him.
“Ok. I’ll be back as soon as I can.” Luka said, and before he left he gave Abby a long and passionate kiss.
When Luka got back from the store he immediately began putting the playpen together. It had a sort of shelf like thing so they could put the babies on it. It went about halfway up the playpen and was cushiony. There were little dents in the cushions, so they babies couldn’t roll around.
Abby was in the living room watching television and feeding Shelly. “Hey Luka, I pumped a record fifteen bottles! Well, now fourteen since she’s drinking one.” “Wow! That’s a lot. It must be since you didn’t pump yesterday night.” Luka said.
“You’re probably right.” Abby said. Luka sat down next to Abby and rubbed Shelly’s feet. When Abby was done feeding her, she handed her to Luka and he burped her. Luka loved burping Shelly so Abby figured that she would just let him do it all the time unless he was sleeping. They had not broken the silence yet, they were just staring at their beautiful daughter, Shelly, but suddenly Luka said something.
“So…when do you think we should tell everyone that we’re engaged?” Luka asked curiously.
“Well, maybe when Josh is out of the hospital.” Abby said.
“Ok.” Luka said.
“Now that I’m saying it a lot more, I don’t think that Josh is a good name for a baby…maybe we could call him Joshy until he gets older.” Abby said.
“Ok…I like it…Joshy...yep, that’s my boy, mi little Joshy.” Luka said.

Chapter 16: Maggie’s Departure
Maggie came running down the stairs with a phone in her hands. Abby was feeding Shelly so she really didn’t realize that her mother was talking on the phone angrily.
“Ok, well fine, I’ll be back in tomorrow.” Maggie said.
“What’s up?” Abby asked, still looking down at Shelly eating while she said it.
“Oh honey, I’m sorry but I have to leave tonight, my boss just called and said that there is a shortage of workers and they need me in as soon as possible.” Maggie said.
“Well, ok, but when do you have to leave? Do you have to leave right now or in the night?” Abby asked her.
“Well, I was thinking that I would catch the last train. Do you know when that is?” Maggie asked her.
“Well, I haven’t taken the train in a while, but your train…the last one probably leaves the station at ten o’clock.”
“Oh, ok. Then I guess I’ll take that one. Do you think I could see little Joshy before I leave?” Maggie asked.
“Of course! Why don’t we all go to lunch first? How about Potbelly’s?”
“Is that the really good sandwich place?” Maggie asked her.
“Yeah…I just have a craving for that.” Abby said.
“Ok, sounds good to me.” Maggie said.
“Let me just finish up with Shelly and then we can go. Can you go tell Luka for me?” Abby asked.
“Yup… I’ll go get him… I’ll tell him that we’re almost ready, I’ll go pack the diaper bag too.” Maggie said.
“Ok…thanks mom.” Abby said.
Abby finished feeding and burping Shelly and then put her in her carrier. She strapped her in and went to use the bathroom. To her surprise she found Luka in there, in the shower. “Luka, I thought my mom came to get you.” Abby said.
“She did. I told her to give me ten minutes.” Luka said.
“Oh…ok.” Abby said.
“Want to join me?” Luka asked her with a dirty look on his face.
“Um…sure why not.” Abby said. Abby hopped into the shower with Luka and they kissed and cuddled for about five minutes. Then they realized that they were short on time so they wrapped it up and got dry and dressed.
When they were finally ready, they all got into the car and headed towards Potbelly’s. Luka got a roast beef sandwich, Abby got a turkey sandwich, and Maggie got a ham sandwich. When they were done with their sandwiches, they went to the hospital to spend some time with Joshua.
They parked the car in the parking garage and headed toward the elevator. They hit the seven button. They waited for the doors to open and they got out. They started walking toward the NICU to visit Joshy. When they went through the doors, Luka rushed right past all of the staff and didn’t even smile. He only smiled when he saw his son, sleeping peacefully, with every breath his chest moved up and down.
“Aww…look at him. He looks so peaceful.” Maggie said. Abby sat down in the rocking chair and got a fussy Shelly out of her carrier. She rocked her back and forth until she fell asleep. Maggie walked to the other side of Joshua’s incubator to sit down on the stool and watch him sleep. “Hi baby…Grandma is here with you right now, but I’ll be leaving soon. When you get back home you make sure that you don’t give your mommy and daddy any problems ok?” Maggie whispered to him.
They stayed at the NICU for about seven hours, seeing that they got there at two. Luka, Abby and Maggie took turns holding Shelly and then when it was nine Abby said, “Ok mom, I think we should go so we don’t miss your train.”
“Ok honey. Bye Joshy… I love you with all my heart. I hope I can come visit you very soon.” Maggie said.
“Of course you can.” Luka said.
They headed towards the elevator and got into the car. They drove to the train station and they all got out with Maggie. Luka, Abby, and Shelly (well, in her carrier against Abby’s chest.) waited with Maggie until her train came. When they heard the train coming Maggie hugged them each good bye and said to Shelly, “You be good for your mommy and daddy. I love you with my whole heart. I’ll see you soon.”
Then she turned towards Abby and Luka and said, “Thank you for letting me stay with you guys. Call me when Joshy gets out of the hospital and tell me when you guys set the date for the wedding.” and with that Maggie stepped onto the train and the train rolled away.
