The staff treats several victims of a drug shootout. The first one to arrive dies. A latina woman named Lizette was the shooter. She arrives--very nasty, belligerent, and uncooperative--with a graze wound. Also wounded in the shootout are Curtis, 17, and his 10-year-old brother, Quincy.
Later, Lizette reveals to Morris that she is an undercover narcotics cop named Claudia. She is worried about Curtis and his brother because she thinks they are not bad kids. In fact, she shot the deceased patient because he shot at the 10-year-old. She cries under the stress. Morris is attracted to her, and she likes him too.
The boys' parents are dead, and Curtis supports himself and his brother by dealing drugs. Banfield lashes out at Curtis to convince him to cooperate with the police and keep himself out of jail. She evens signs on to be the boys' advocate.
Banfield gets disappointing test results from Coburn that imply in-vitro fertilization would not be successful for her. So I infer that Banfield and her husband Russell are trying to have another child.
Neela treats 13-year-old Anastasia ("Ana"), who is sick with sickle cell disease. Anastasia volunteers to fix Neela's perpetually beeping cell phone. When Neela retrieves it, Ana says she got a text message from Ray--apparently saying he was thinking of her. Ana responded (as Neela) that she was thinking of him, too. Later, Ana reports Neela got another text message--this time from Simon. Ana "high-5s" Neela for being a "player."
Meanwhile, Neela is interested in a program at Johns Hopkins, and wants to talk to Banfield about it.
Gates and Sam are not getting along. In fact, Alex is being discharged from the hospital, and it is a surprise to Gates, though Sam has known for a couple of days. Near the end of the episode, Alex is wheeled out, and Sam is very happy.
Gates meets up with his homeless veteran friend Max at a suit store. He asks Gates to hold onto his best friend (a dog, I assume). Later, Gates sits drunk in Ike's and opens a gift from Max. It is a Silver Star of valor
