“Mommy!” Joe came running down the stairs. “Can I go and see daddy now?” Joe was ready to go to the hospital. Susan thought yesterday that Luka opened his eyes, but it was a non specific eye movement. This morning the hospital had called that he was definitely awake now and that he responded to the presence of the medical staff.
“Yes honey, go and get your coat” Abby rushed to refrigerator and got some juice and bread for Joe and herself. Susan, Chuck and Cosmo were still asleep and Abby left a note to inform them. She was glad Joe and her could go together, it was special moment and it was good that they would share it.
Joe was dressed in his coat and was trying to put a big bag on his back.
“Honey, why are you taken your backpack to the hospital? ”
“I have packed some things for daddy”
“I am sure he will be glad you brought him presents” Abby didn’t know what her son had been packing, but she thought it would be oke.
An half hour later they were in the elevator and Abby was getting nervous. Joe on the other hand was ecstatic by the thought that he was going to see his dad. The elevator opened and they both got out. Joe needed to wear a mask because he was younger than six years. Abby took the opportunity to talk to Joe and prepare him for the last time.
“Joe, you know daddy is very sick. He is going to have all sort of tubes on his body. So we have to be very careful” Abby looked at Joe, who looked adorable with a mask.
“Look mommy” Joe pointed to his refection in the mirror. “Now daddy can’t get sicker” Abby laughed at Joe.
“Ready to go buddy?”
“Yes, I can show daddy my mask”
Abby picked Joe up. She opened the door to the ICU and was greeted by a nurse sitting behind a desk.
“We are here to see Luka Kovac” Abby didn’t wait for an answer from the nurse. She was focused on the door that separated the two of them from Luka. The walk to his room seemed to last an eternity. She opened the door and Luka was laying in the same position as he had been the last week with his eyes closed.
“Can you see daddy?” Abby looked at Joe who was impressed by all the equipment that was in the room. “The machines give daddy medicines to make him better and to help him breath” Joe was still quite and not looking at Abby. “Honey do you want to leave? ”
“I want to give daddy a hug” Joe finally said. Abby walked towards his bed with Joe still in her arms.
“Daddy are you sleeping? You can’t be tired you have been sleeping for a week. Mommy why is daddy still tired?”
“People who are sick are tired, because getting better is hard work”
Abby stroke Luka’ face and gave him a kiss, followed by Joe who hocked himself on to Luka.
“Daddy, it is time to wake up. I have a present for you” Joe was sitting on the side of the bed next to Luka and leaning on Abby.
Luka’ body moved and slowly he opened his eyes. The sight of Abby and Joe made his eyes sparkle a little. Abby and Joe both gave him a big hug and kisses. Abby was crying, all tears of joy, she was thankful the three of them were together again. Abby stroke his face and they both stared at each other’ eyes for a few seconds, before Joe remembered something.
“Daddy, I brought you presents” Joe jumped of the bed to go and get his backpack. This gave Abby the opportunity to be alone with Luka for a moment. “I love you so much” Abby kept her hand on his face and used the other one to sweep the tears from her face. Because Luka still had a breathing tube down his throat, he couldn’t talk back.
“Mommy can you help me get on daddy’ bed?” Joe had found this backpack.
“Sure honey” Abby took her hands of Luka’ face and help her son to go and sit on the bed.
“I brought you my favorite frog, so that you are not alone when mommy and I are sleeping at home” Joe put his frog next to Luka’ face. Abby was surprised Joe gave Luka the stuffed animal he normaly slept with.
Joe had brought more presents and gave them one by one to Luka. After Joe emptied his backpack, Abby saw that Luka was getting tired.
“Joe, we have to go now. Daddy needs to sleep now”
They both said goodbye and went home. Joe fell asleep in the car, although it was still morning the visit had clearly worn him out. Abby couldn’t wait to go home and call Josip with the good news. She knew everything was going to be oke.
