I think some people have taken dislike to new extremes. I often find myself watching Abby and thinking "I bet ERForums will bitch about that!" It almost ruins if for me.
I lurk around at other boards to see what people have to say and to hunt for spoilers. It is kind of depressing to see how they blame Luby for the decline in ratings. Sure, there are instances when Abby is not the world's nicest person. Um, hello...she has had a crappy life and if finall finding happiness. Get over it. Miss Carter and holier-than-thou-art Peter Benton weren't a day at the beach for the most part, either.
You know, I read how they gripe about charecters and as I watch (For the umpteenth time) the reruns on TNT, I realize that ER is the same as it always was. Just new faces. Mark, Kerry, Doug, Carol and so on were NOT SAINTS. The sun did not rise and set on their behinds. Who cares that Carter left??? He was a spoiled brat prone to tempter tantrums when he didn't get his way. I guess the reason they cry fowl so much is that their favorites are gone and now the charecters they didn't care for are in charge. So, what Doug Ross could get away with and be praised for, Luka Kovac cannot- and is ultimately condemned for.
That's my take on it anyway.

I agree with what you say. Re-watching the old ERs it is hard to pinpoint the difference to today. I suppose there is a lack of originality or slightly more outlandish things going on as most of the normal stuff has been done - regarding illnesses, but that's inevitable with a show running for 13 seasons. Similarly with some of the minor characters there is repitition (how many nasty male surgeons can there be) As far as the main characters go... imo there is a lack of definition. When you watch the early series the characters seem better thought out and explained to me. Now apart from Abby and Luka I'm not sure they're as well rounded or explored (I still like Neela, Ray and Morris, but I'm not sure we know enough about them).
But, I agree with what has been said before, it's not that much different really. It's a natural progression. As it's been running for 13 seasons new viewers feel like they can't really tune in now as they won't get it, plus there are now lots of similar shows around now. So that leaves older viewers with favourite characters who are likely to leave when their favourite does - or hang around talking about how bad the show has got since X has left. I can't say I blame them too much on the first count, as Abby and Luka are my favourite two characters and if they left I don't know if I'd really keep watching, definitely not with the same amount of obsession (that's why the show should finish when they leave imo) - and to those people who think that Abby & Luka ruined the show, they should see the nosedive ratings will take if the pair ever leave. IMO they're the two characters holding it together.

From Azzizal at Goran Board Episode 13.20 - Lights Out: Chaz is at the hospital as a patient. Pratt is not happy at all. A homeless man asks Kovac not to discharge him as it is supposed to rain all night. Ray treats a violinist. Abby and Gates treat a man with a dislocated shoulder. There is some sort of formal dinner set to happen at the hospital. Gates complains about Morris to Neela. The episode ends with a montage of various scenes of the characters at night. Mike, Marquez, Malik, Sam and Crenshaw also appear. I loved it .. The episode ends with a montage of various scenes of the characters at night´.[/i]

YAY I hope we get some Luby in that montage!! Sorry, no Luka/Abby, Abby is pushing a gurney in one of the montage scenes, they are moving patients out for when they close the ER temporarily.

I read somewhere that the man Luka is treating makes Luka remembers his own father... so, it's a cue on what is passing on Luka's head...
