Just did some figuring and the 10th episode of the new season will be ER's 300th episode. Wonder if they will so something spectacular with it?

Just did some figuring and the 10th episode of the new season will be ER's 300th episode. Wonder if they will so something spectacular with it? I think everybody we know and love comes back to the ER...! Luka comes back from Croatia for good! Carol and Doug realize Seattle wasn't for them and head back home to county and are reinstated into their former positions. Carters comes back because he is fed up of saving the world. Susan to, don't know why? but she is...! why did she leave? and Benton's back in surgery. Missed anybody? Dr Greene, but he six feet under, now that would be a 300th episode if they brought him back OK, this is all fictional but i can dream..... but can you imagine, how great it would be....All our favourite characters together again. Doug wondering the coridoors again with nurse Hathaway by his side, Benton and Carter back together, Susan and Abby friendship, Luka back in the ER, lot of lubby moments again. and i could see that Doug and Luka would become really good friends.... If only it could happen....

Susan left for Iowa and a tenured position at another teaching hospital. This happened after Kerry granted CARTER tenure - which he had not applied for - after he gifted the hospital with the funds to build the Joshua Carter Center. Dirty dealings and she left without notice, which made me sad. I would love to see her back but the actress may very well have burned her bridges with the production team.

Well! I hope they do do something BIG, no HUGE! Like bring Luka back from Croatia, that would be nice. And maybe add TONS of drama! LOL, they do that all the time anyway.
Well, 300, that's a lot, not many shows reach their 300th episode!

What they did with the 100th (Good Luck Ruth Johnson) episode was nice. It was about the woman who had been born in the hospital coming back to commemorate her 100th birthday. They put Carter in charge of her and he thought it was a waste of his talent. I loved it. The 200th episode (When Night Meets Day) kind of slipped by with hardly a notice. It was cutting edge - with Carter and Pratt dealing with the same patients during a 24 hour period but the most memorable event was Doc Magoo's burning to the ground. I sincerely hope they make some notice of this one because you're right, not many one hour dramas make it to that milestone these days. I'd wager that even 'Grey's Anatomy' won't make it.

Actually Abby is about a half year behind finishing her last year as a resident, isn't she?. It would be fun if they used the 300th to accentuate her 'graduation', make her an attending AND have Luka back. Talk about completing an arc for them!

Depends on whether you think the residency is 3 or 4 years. As I understand it, in real life it's 3, and it was 3 in the earlier seasons, but morphed into 4 later on (in one episode when Abby had just started as an intern, I remember someone saying she would have to work with Ray for the next 4 years). With Neela up in surgery and Ray recuperating, I imagine TPTB will make up whatever length they want for Abby's residency.

I believe a standard medical residency for physicians is four years. Intern, R2, R3, and R4. Abby finished her her third year of med school in s6 and began her fourth year in s7. She completed that year in s10, and graduated. Her intern year was s11, then she was an R2 in s12 and an R3 in s13. This would be her last year, but as residencies don't finish until July (universal), she wouldn't be offered an attending spot until the theoretical beginning of s15, should there be one.

Ah....I see. So they offer her an attending spot at the end of this season and she thanks them kindly and flies off to join Luka in Croatia. Sigh.

I'm fairly sure there is some variation in the length of residency... this website gives details of accredited residency programs, including standard lengths, it seems several of the Illinois ones do last 3 years. (I have no idea why I'm bothering to look this up!)

Programs differ based on the specialty, and sometimes based on the hospital. However, some of the inconsistency on the show as to how many years a character is a resident depends on whether they are actually pursuing emergency medicine as a specialty. For example, in the original cast, both Benton and Carter were surgical residents, while Susan was the only ER resident. Surgical residencies are a whole different ballgame.
County General is based on Cook County General Hospital in Chicago, which does in fact exist. The legnth of residency there is three years, which I don't beleive includes the internship year (interns are technically R1's but are not referred to as such).

(I have no idea why I'm bothering to look this up!) A residency consists of three years in addition to a preliminary internship year. Cook county prospective residents can either apply as fourth year medical students or they can complete their internship elsewhere and then begin their residencies there as R1s. You're right that some hospitals now offer 3 year programs instead of the standard 4 however any emergency medicine department will almost assuredly have 4. Remember that emergency medicine is one of the most lucrative and risky of the medical fields and shortened residencies would simply not be conducive to good emergency health care.

I think what confuses people - including me - is calling the first year of a practicum study, 'internship', followed by 'R2". A resident would then proceed to R3 and R4 steps.....four years total....with three years termed as a 'Resident'.
