That's the one and only time I was ever grateful that Abby had a hysterectomy, so we didn't have to worry about any other horrifying consequences from her night with Moretti.

See, I look at it from the other side completely.
And, god -- I don't even want to write it because it's going to sound so superficial and silly and ridiculous and like, such a stupid thing to even think about, but I really can't help it. Thinking about that night and knowing about her hysterectomy, I just... I hate it, because it probably means that... protection... wasn't used. *dies inside*
And I really can't handle that.

I'm so glad they never raised those issues - protection, testing, etc. I simply did not want to know or ever hear about anything re: that night ever again LOL

Which was shocking consdering that TPTB like to dump a whole lot of crap on Abby and or Luka whenever they can. For a while I thought the return of Moretti would be "You need to get tested, I have HIV." Thank God the monkeys writting that storyline did not go there.

It wasn't a concern about disease, or even pregnancy, that makes me unable to handle it...
Still, though -- clearly the purpose of that night was to demonstrate how severe Abby's relapse had gotten. How out of control she'd become. I never -- hysterectomy or not -- got the feeling we were supposed to worry about any other consequences besides what it would mean for Abby's relationship with Luka (and her son and friends and colleagues), and how it further demonstrated what her relationship with alcohol was like.
We've noted before how this was representative of her absolute lowest point. And then when Luka came back, she was forced to choose between what was most important to her -- getting better and fixing it, or continuing down a path of destruction and losing everything -- her marriage, her family; maybe even her job and friends -- along the way.
You know, it sort of took me a long while to reconcile with the fact that all this had to happen, and it took time for me to finally understand it, too. A friend of mine said something to me recently, about all this having been necessary in order for Abby to actually confront her demons. Necessary for improvement.
I can see that now.

You know, with the way her "recovery" magically seemed to happen in S9, I do agree that she needed to hit rock bottom in a big, big way in S14 for her to truly start getting better. I just wish her rock bottom hadn't included a naked, hairy, bald guy LOL

I think the only thing preventing them of doing such horrible story was time. They had Goran for a few episodes and Maura was leaving too. If they had more seasons I would worry about poor Joe too. You are so right Sallings, TPTB certanly like our couple in pain. Hey, Tara, how about a hot med student? I would like that (well, comparing to Stanley...)

It was a "go big or go home" storyline, and the rock bottom had to be big. And from the reaction from us fans it worked, it got people worked up to the point that Maura was getting yelled at by fans when she was out and about (she talks about it in the Turby interview). Even I wanted to go out to LA with a friend and beat the writer of "Blackout" with his or her own picket sign. The big reaction the ep got shows how much the fans still really care for the characters and the show 14 seasons in.

I don't think that Abby really spiralled that low in S9 at least compared to S14. Then again Abby in S8/S9 didn't really have anything to loose. She was a nurse, she was single and didn't have too many friends at the hospital at that point. She also didn't come into work drunk or act out as much as she did in S14.
The catalysts for her relapses in S8 and S14 are interesting. In S8 she relapsed because she had nothing, she was alone, she really at that point didn't have anything. In S14 she had a husband, son and was a doctor, she was also well loved within the ER and had many friends. So any relapse she would have had in S14 was going to have major consequence's.
The under lying issue which caused Abby's relapse was her abandonment issues. As well as the stress of being a full time working and essentially single mother. This is enough to make anyone go crazy. Throw in the fact that the first person who you've trusted in a very long time has suddenly left you and things aren't going well in work (Moretti) and your son never seems to be content. You need some sort of comfort. Since Abby isn't the most open person, she had no one at that point to turn to. So i'm not just a fying her relapse, just pointing out that for her character it was probably inevitable.
So why didn't she stop? I think Abby had run out of strength at that point. It is very hard to keep an addiction at bay (if anyone has ever lost a serious amount of weight you may perhaps relate) its a never ending constant 24/7 battle. She also had to keep on working a stressful job, parent a difficult child and at that point i think she had the strength to be a doctor and a parent but since they were more important than her addiction, her fight against addiction went on the back burner.
It is true, in order for her to truley get better she did need to hit rock bottom. Speaking from personal experience here. It is only when you actually get to the lowest of the low can you make a true attempt at getting better. Otherwise you will go along never truly have beaten the addiction.
Sorry for the long post!
