New update!! Chapter 23
A week later“Another,” Abby said, her sounds slightly slurring together. Joe the bar tender moved in front of her and took the shot glass off of the counter top.
“I think you’re good, I’m cutting you off,” Joe told her, causing Abby to look up at him sharply.
“What? You can’t seriously be cutting me off,” she slurred. “I am an adult. I know my limits,” she argued. Today had been a bad day, make that an awful day. The whole week, actually hadn’t been great. She couldn’t figure it out, but no matter what everything was wrong.
Luka had been incredibly supportive, even after she had just walked away that day and didn’t come back home until late that night. He never even asked her where she had gone. But, the more he was supportive the angrier she got. It was like she didn’t even recognize herself.
“Here, have some water,” Joe offered placing a glass in front of her. Abby rolled her eyes and pushed the glass away.
“I don’t want any damn water; I want another shot of tequila.”
“Let’s go home,” Luka’s voice came behind her. Abby stiffened in her seat and she sent an evil glare to Joe.
“Did you call my husband on me?” She angrily snapped at Joe. “Seriously?”
Luka took a seat next to Abby on a wobbly barstool and looked at Joe apologetically and nodded, telling him it was okay to walk away. Luka took in a deep breath and watched as Abby fidgeted with the fringe on her purse.
“I can’t believe that he called you, that is just ridiculous. I could have gotten myself home, you know.”
“I know,” Luka agreed. “I thought you were at work.” Abby’s eyes jutted open, as she was searching for an excuse. She hadn’t expected to get caught in a lie. She had called Luka and told him she had to work late. However, she never anticipated Joe calling him.
“I…I was…” Abby began, scrambling for words, “I…I just left.”
“Abby,” Luka said unbelievingly, “you’re drunk.”
“I am not,” Abby snapped. “I’m fine.”
“Whatever, let’s just go home, Abby,” Luka sighed, his voice tired.
“Go home if you want to, but I am staying here. You are not the boss of me Luka Kovac.”
“Abby, stop. I’m tired, it’s late, let’s just go home. Stop being so…” Luka tapered off and Abby raised her eyebrows.
“I’m so…what? What is it Luka? You keep starting to call me something, so what is it? So bitchy? So evil? So angry? So like an ass?” Abby paused. “Wait, no that would be you. Or have you forgotten? Not too long ago, you, Luka Kovac, were an ass. Do you remember that? You’ve done this whole 180 turn in the past sixteen years, but you used to be an ass. A big one, too. Remember?? Huh? Do you?” Luka didn’t respond. However, he looked around, seeing who could hear his wife’s continually raising voice.
“I just want to sit here and have another drink,” Abby said, her voice low and pleading.
“We need to go home, Abby. The kids need you.”
“No.” Abby stated bluntly. “No, don’t you dare bring them into this.”
“Into what Abby?” Luka said, his resolve finally breaking. He had been trying so hard not to react, but no matter what he did, she just got more irate. “You’re the one that’s doing this. You are the one that keeps starting these arguments.”
Abby looked away, shaking her head angrily. She closed her eyes and then her head snapped back to Luka and she looked at him with all the animosity that was left in her body and said with ice cold words, “I hate you.” She continued to stare him down, her eyes daring him to say something back, or even to hit her. Any kind of reaction. However, his face never faltered.
“Fine,” he replied, “but you can hate me at home,” he said as he picked her up and swung her over his shoulder.
“Thanks Joe, I’ll get the bill tomorrow,” he called as he walked Abby out of the bar and to the car.
After Luka got Abby in the car, he got in on his side. For a few minutes he just sat there in silence. He looked over to Abby, who was staring out of the window, and then began the car, defeated. As he was driving in silence, he thought he heard something on Abby’s side of the car. When he turned to look, he could have sworn that he saw her crying.
