Who would have guessed it: Maura Tierney, the petite actress who played the feisty nurse-who-became-a-doctor Abby Lockhart on "ER," the formidable prosecutor on "The Whole Truth" and the woman who won the 2003 season of "Celebrity Poker Showdown," has a shy side.
"Can we move someplace else?" she asked, self-consciously pulling her hands through her hair when a young actor unintentionally sat down close enough to overhear her interview at the Williamstown Theatre Festival’s ‘62 Center for Music and Dance.
"It’s just awkward to talk about yourself sometimes," Tierney explained -- embarrassed but unafraid to show her vulnerability. (The actor was kind enough to move.)
This combination of strength and vulnerability has contributed to Tierney’s popularity over her 24-year acting career.
"I think there’s a relatability that people have with me," Tierney explained. "I communicate a truthfulness."
Tierney, who is making her WTF debut this summer, shares truthfulness with Barbara Hoyle, the character she portrays in Jon Robin Baitz’s "Three Hotels," the play that kicked off the Main Stage season at WTF on Wednesday, June 29, and runs through July 24. Barbara and her husband, Ken, (played by Steven Weber) both former Peace Corps volunteers, have made moral compromises for many years. Ken is a hatchet man for a multinational company that sells defective baby formula in Third World countries. Barbara, who has been a good corporate wife as they have moved all over the world, finally can’t take it anymore.
"I think that there are certain thresholds that we have as human beings," Tierney said, describing her character. "Barbara was pushed across a line of what is acceptable to her. The callousness of the company and her husband, in collusion with them, asking her to put on a happy face was too galling to her."
Tierney was dressed casually in jeans, an open-necked shirt of a soft blue fabric and silver hoop earrings. Even without makeup, she looked beautiful. The 46-year-old is the daughter of a real estate agent and former Boston City Council President Joseph Tierney. She spent her childhood in Hingham with one brother and a sister, who is now the mother of three. Tierney was married to actor Billy Morrissette for 13 years.
As a teenager, she wanted to be a dancer, and after high school enrolled in a dance program at New York University.
"I loved watching dancers, and I loved dance. But I wasn’t good enough," Tierney said.
She switched to drama and then was accepted into the Circle-in-the-Square theater school before graduating from NYU. She has been working since 1987 in television, theater and the movies.
Tierney has something in common with Tom Hanks and Calista Flockhart: She played Sally Field’s child. Field guest-starred on "ER" for six seasons. Before "ER," Tierney played Lisa Miller in the TV situation comedy "News Radio" from 1995 to 1999. She was Jim Carrey’s wife in the 1997 movie "Liar Liar" and most recently was seen with Tina Fey and Amy Pohler in the film "Baby Mama." This winter she stared in Yasmina Reza’s award-winning play "God of Carnage" at the Gate Theatre in Dublin, Ireland.
In 2009, just as she was set to star in the television series "Parenthood," she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She resigned from the show to face the cancer challenge head-on. Tierney underwent surgery to remove a tumor and endured many months of chemotherapy. While she was still in treatment, her father died of cancer. She bravely attended his funeral with a bald head.
"Cancer is such an emotional thing. It’s so scary," she said.
Triumphing over adversity runs in her family. Her 33-year-old brother, Joe, was hit by a car when he was 15 years old and had brain damage. He was in a coma for two weeks and had an arduous rehabilitation process. It didn’t stop him from graduating from law school. "That’s an inspiration," Tierney said.
Tierney also mentioned Laura Ziskin, the producer of the "Spider Man" trilogy and the three-network fundraiser "Stand Up To Cancer," who recently lost her battle to the disease, as also being an inspiration.
"She was a very tough lady and very smart," Tierney said, "Today, in my life, someone like that is very inspiring, because I haven’t quite figured out sort of where to put my experience in terms of the public, and I wish I had gotten to talk to her a little bit more."
Tierney exudes a kind of sexual edginess in her dress and attitude. One role she particularly would like to play is Heidi Fleiss in a movie that deeply explores the "Hollywood Madam’s" life.
"I’m not kidding," she said. "I find her a fascinating modern American woman, because she just was extraordinarily successful and didn’t play by the rules and got in trouble. I mean, no one ever goes to jail for that. She was a hugely successful madam at the age of 24, making millions and millions and millions of dollars.
"I think it’s interesting that none of her clients were in trouble. I’m not saying she’s a heroine, but she’s fascinating, and she’s tragic."
Tierney said she doesn’t know what’s next on her schedule, but she would like to get more involved in the development of the projects in which she appears.
This is Tierney’s first trip to Williamstown, which she said is "very quiet."
"I think I haven’t heard quiet like this in a long, long time. It’s calming," said Tierney, who lives in New York City and Los Angeles.
As a Red Sox fan, she feels right at home. "It’s so nice to be in this place. Whatever restaurant you go into or bar, they’re playing the Red Sox," she said. "Usually I have to watch the Yankees."
After her interview, Tierney headed first to lunch and then back to rehearsal. One wanted to wish her good luck in so many ways. But in the theater, saying "good luck" is bad luck. So: You go, girl.
"Three Hotels" runs through July 24 on the Main Stage at Williamstown Theatre Festival at the ‘62 Center for Theatre Dance on Main Street. For tickets and information, visit wtfestival.org. www.advocateweekly.com/ci_18377122

fantastic article - I just love when she is interviewed! Did anyone know about her brother's accident? That is news to me. She mentioned this back in 2005: ...Tierney shared her own story about access to emergency care. Her brother was treated at the emergency room about ten years ago, after sustaining a serious head injury. Without access to prompt emergency care, Tierney said, her brother might not be alive today....luby.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=gotopost&board=aiarchive&thread=2957&post=144720
