Abby wiped the dark red droplets of blood from her upper lip. Raising her swollen eyes to the reflection in the mirror, she shook her head in disgust. Locked in a bathroom, crying, Abby was terrified that Brain was waiting for her outside the door. The blood kept flowing down her chin; she pressed the washclothed harder against her nose and lip. She was strong, always so strong, this wasn’t like her feeling vulnerable. She was stronger than this. The thick walls she’d been building and hiding behind were coming crashing down. Being this terrified, this exposed was new to her. Abby turned away from the mirror and sat on the edge of the tub, the chock was slowly consuming her, and she was starting to shake. “
You're in shock, Abby, snap out of it,” she thought. Suddenly, she began to shake even more violently, her teeth painfully knocking together.
The trip to the hospital were a blur. Abby was struggling in and out of consciousness.
From a distance she could here the paramedics talk about her blood pressure, and about County.

Luka nervously perched on a stool in an examining room at County, waiting beside his best friend Abby, his ex lover Abby, his smart, and funny, charming, lovely, wonderful, future wife to be; Abby. Opposite them, leaning casually against the wall, was a policewoman, her face deliberately devoid of emotion. Acting as if it were perfectly normal for a woman to sit, on an examining table in a busy E.R., covered in blood. Then again this was normal, assaulted women came through the E.R doors every day, just not *his* woman.
The door suddenly opened, it was Susan. She looked at Abby, then at Luka with an uncomfortable look on her face. She turned around looking at the policewoman frowning.
“Excuse me, but could you please wait outside while I examine my patent.” She brusque said.
“I need to ask Miss Lockhart some questions, it was Lockhart, right?”
“Right this moment you don’t” Susan said practically pushing the woman out the door. “Come back in an hour”, she said slamming the door shut. She turned around facing Luka and Abby one´s again. Abby had still not uttered word since she arrived at the hospital.
“ Luka, I would like you to wait outside to..”“No way, I’m not leaving her side.” Luka said offensive, glaring at Susan.
Susan sighed deeply
“Luka, she’s my patient, we have to treat her as any other ordinary patient, how difficult that maybe, it’s the way we have to do.."“Susan skip the crap, I’m staying here with Abby, either as a friend or a doctor. You decide?”“Luka just leave”, Susan mumbled.
Luka was about to open his mouth to protest, when a hoarse whisper stopped him.
“No"Surprised, both he and Susan swung around to face Abby.
"Abby?" Susan said hesitant.
Licking her lips, Abby said carefully, "
No. I want him to stay…as a friend.” You can be my doctor Susan that would make me more comfortable.”Luka felt a wave of relief wash over him. Relief that she seemed to be coming out of it at last. And because she wanted him to stay with her.
“Okay, Abby that all that counts”, Susan said smiling a bit reaching for her gloves.
Susan started examining Abby’s abdomen and chest. Luka saw this as his opportunity to talk some more to Abby. He took her small, white hand and kissed it.
“What happened Abby? Who did this to you?”“My neighbour”, Abby answered flatly.
“Why would he do this to you?” Luka asked confused.
“Joyce the girl I was helping to escape, the girl who was beaten by her husband…Brian is her husband. He came by, he wanted to know were I placed Joyce.. Which shelter.. I refused to tell him..I..Aoooh!!” Abby was interrupted by a intense pain caused by Susan’s examination of her nose.
“I’m sorry Abby, but it must be fractured.” Susan said removing her hand from Abby’s nose.
Luka squeezed Abby’s hand hard trying to comfort her the best he could. It was so hard for him to see her like this.
“Uhh, Abby? I noticed something on you upper thigh, a large bruise?” Susan said lingering.
"Did he..Susan paused.
Were..were you raped?”
“He hit me. I don’t remember.. I don’t wanna remember", Abby said quietly, silent tears started falling down her white cheeks.
“Then I’ve to order a rape kit for you, I’m sorry” Susan said. God this was so difficult, she just wanted to break down and cry, but not in front of Abby, she needed to stay professional, for Abby’s sake.
Luka went rigid at the word “rape”, his grip on Abby’s hand intensified. And when he noticed the silent tears tracking down her cheeks he felt the rage that had been lurking just underneath the shock, horror and grief explode to the surface. He wanted to break something. To hurt someone. He wanted to kill Brian. But he also knew that lashing out wouldn't do anyone any good. Abby needed him to be calm, to think clearly, to be there for her.
Susan removed her gloves and pushed a strand of hair out of Abby’s face.
“Everything will be alright, I promise.” She said turning toward the door.
“Luka I need you to leave, please. While, I do this procedure"…Luka looked down at Abby, trying to get an indication of what she wanted. Abby nodded. That was Lukas key to leave. He would not make her uncomfortable. He squeezed her hand one last time, and turned toward the door.
“I’ll be right outside, Abby.” He said leaving the room.
Susan shut the door behind Luka and went to work.
