“Thanks for the ride.” I say to Amy and her Mom as I get out of her car. “I’ll see you at school tomorrow?” I ask.
“Yeah sure, see you tomorrow.” Amy replies as her car pulls away.
As I walk up the drive to the house I can hear indistinct shouting coming from inside. I’m puzzled, I know things haven’t exactly been right at home recently, but I haven’t heard them argue like this since I was little. Something is definitely wrong; I think to myself I open the front door. Closing it behind me I shout “I’m home!”
They’ve tried to hush their arguing but I can still hear it.
Just before I open the door to the kitchen I hear Dad say to Mom, trying not to shout. “You didn’t even want anymore children after Alex, and now that you want to move to Milwaukee you want to take her with you?!”
I can’t believe what I just heard. I open the door. I don’t want to hear what her answer is.
They know I’m here, but their eyes don’t move from each others. Their eyes are full of identical anger.
“Mom? Dad?”
Dad turns to face me but Mom turns away and looks out of the window, I know she doesn’t want me to see her cry, but I know she is I can hear her faint sobs and sniffs. “What’s going on Dad?” I question
“Hey Kelly, How was school? Good day?”
These past few weeks they have changed the conversation when I’ve walked in the room, and I’ve let them. This time I won’t.
“Umm…forget that. What were you two arguing about?”
“You know what? It doesn’t matter Kel. Is Amy coming here later to study or are you going to hers?” Mom asks as she turns away from the window to face me. Her eyes stay fixed on me, she won’t even look at Dad. Although Dad is looking at her.
“Umm…Neither, it’s not Thursday. What’s going on between you two? Nothing has been right around here for weeks!” I question them. “And don’t give me any crap about patients and stress at work!” They both look at me stunned.
“I’m not stupid!”
“I can’t deal with this now. You’re the one moving to Milwaukee, so you can explain how you want to take our daughter away from her Father…” Dad shouts at Mom as he leaves the kitchen, finishing his sentence as he grabs his coat in the hallway “…forever!”
He slams the front door on his way out whilst swearing in Croatian.
I turn to Mom, almost in tears.
“What the hell is going on?!” I scream.
“Do you want a drink, hunny?” She asks me.
“NO Mom! I want you to tell me what’s happening!” I scream at her through my tears. A single tear rolls down Moms cheek.
“Uhmm, lets sit down honey.”

“Hey, Doctor Kovac!" You’re late, what’s your excuse this time? Were you and Sam…?” Morris trails off.
“Shut up Morris and get laid” Luka says without looking up at Morris as he walks past admit to the doctors lounge.
Closing his locker door, he rests his forehead against it sighing, hoping that Sam isn’t screwing with their daughters mind to make her go to Milwaukee with her.
Luka got pulled out of his thoughts by the sound of the lounge door opening, he turns quickly to see who it is.
“Hi Luka, you ok?” Abby asked as she went over to the coffee machine.
“Hey Abby, Yeah I’m fine” Luka replied heading for the couch and sat down.
“Do you want one?” she asks pointing at the coffee machine.
“Yeah, Thanks.” Luka answers.
“Are you sure you’re ok?” Abby asked with a concerned tone. “You don’t look that great.” She says handing him a cup of coffee and sitting down next to him.
“Well, if you call losing your family a good thing. Then I’m excellent, Never better” he replied with a slightly sarcastic tone.
“Oh, is Sam leaving you?” As Abby said this she wanted to kick herself, what else could he of meant, she didn’t have to say it out loud.
“Yeah, Sam told me told me a few weeks ago that she had been looking for a new job in Milwaukee, and then after she got a job there she decided to tell me that she wanted a divorce.”
“What about Kelly? Does she know?”
“Erm, she walked in on me and Sam arguing this evening after school. I couldn’t stay there and listen to her trying to rationalise things to Kelly. So came here. I left Sam to explain this, as it is her mess. Kelly is a smart kid, she knows something hasn’t been right for weeks now. I didn’t want Kelly to know before now, I was hoping I would change her mind about Milwaukee and that we could resolve things. But we haven’t.”
“So, do you think Kelly will want to move to Milwaukee with Sam?” Abby asked.
“I hope not, I mean you know how it was when Sam didn’t even want Kelly. She wanted an abortion…” Abby awkwardly looked at the floor thinking of her own abortion. “…She said she was done with having kids that she already had Alex and didn’t want anymore. Now she’s doing the ‘I’m the mother, Kelly should come with me’ thing. I can’t believe she’s doing this. I can’t do this. I need to work. I need to take my mind of it” Luka said as he stood and walked to the door.
“Luka…” he turned and looked at Abby still sitting on the couch.
“Yeah?” Luka asked.
“Whenever you want to talk some more, just let me know and we can get a coffee or something.” She said to Luka and gave a friendly smile. Luka returned a smile and replied “Thanks.” As he left the lounge.
“Ah, Luka you’re late.” Kerry called over as Luka walked up to the admit desk and picked up his first chart”Hello to you to Kerry” he said as he walked through admit to exam 2 where his first patient was waiting.
Luka didn’t look very well. He looked tired and scruffy, unusual for him.
Turning to the others at the admit desk Kerry asks “Is he Ok?” Jerry just shrugged and continued to shuffle his papers from one pile to the other.
“I don’t think so” Neela replied with a concerned expression.
“Perhaps Sam and he are having a lovers tiff!” Morris said with his usual uncaring, joking tone. Both Kerry and Neela turn quickly to give Morris evil looks.
“What?!?” Morris asked surprised.
“You’re unbelievable Morris.” Neela said as she hit him with a patients chart on her way to curtain 4.
“OW!” Morris shouted like baby as Neela left.
