Hey everybody, I was just wondering if anyone can explain to me the whole phrase of "holding down the fort" on the show. I just heard someone say it in an eppy on season 4, Weaver said it in season 12, and Luka said it to Abby when he was leaving for Africa. Are they just saying it to say what it is supposed to really mean, or do they say it as an inside joke that I don't get, or do the writers just run out of phrases for the characters to say. Thanks.

I think it;s a phrase thats kinda meant in a jokey kind of way like "look after this place" but the implied meaning is that said place is hard to handle... I think. Sorry, I'm rubbish at explaining things.

It's a reference to wartime, when forts were essentially strategic locations where troops gathered. "Holding down" a fort meant protecting it from enemies and overseeing the troops. So, "Hold down the fort" just means Kerry wants Luka to take care of the ER and make sure it runs as smoothly as she would like, as well as watching over the staff.
