Guilt
“ 3, 2, 1 and clear” Carter shouted, he couldn’t believe himself this was happening.
“Luka, please! Oh, God please just come back, please come back” Abby cried.
Susan looked at the clock, 15 minutes like this. Heart attack and now this.
Hey had to keep trying.
Abby’s eyes pleaded. Sam stood in a corner watching, Kerry was running downstairs.
“How long?” She burst in
“15”
“Keep trying”
“Luka, please”
“And… … … clear!” Again.
They waited. 1, 2 ,5 seconds, and … … … “Guys, he’s back!” Susan screamed with a large smile.
“Jesus, Kovac, are you trying to kill us?” Carter mumbled with a smile.
Abby couldn’t believe it. She laughed as relief washed over.
“Ok, well, now he has to stabilize. Sam, go … he’s going to need a nurse” Kerry started
“I’ll do it” Abby announced.
“You’re a doctor”
“I was a nurse”
“Dr Lockhart”
“Kerry, Sam’s not doing this”
Both Sam and Abby stared at each other trying to kill one another with their own eyes.
Susan pushed Kerry to the side. “Dr Weaver there’s still a chance for a second hear attack, I mean in Luka’s age, and with the amount of stress, if you want to make sure he’ll be fine trust me, Abby’s the best one for the job”
Kerry sighed. “Abby you’re just turned into Dr Kovac’s nurse. Susan and Carter you’re both responsible as doctors”
She studied him. Paying careful attention to every line on him.
The scars on his face, the lines that built his eyes, his nose … … … She knew those lines by heart, she had studied them before, but not like this. Never like this.
There was a tube connected to his arm, medication running through his veins, ECG on his chest monitoring his every heartbeat. Not that it was at all necessary, since she herself had been holding up his pulse in her hands, checking every beat.
His hands were finally warm again, his breathing clear and Abby’s own heartbeat was calm again. Her anxiety was smoothed somehow, and the fear, well that still existed with even more power than before.
It wasn’t as if he was at risk, though she had never really seen him like this, so vulnerable, so mortal. Sure it was granted he was mortal, specially after Africa, but she had never actually seen it, HIM, laying on a bed, helpless, depending on doctors and nurses, not even with his Malaria had he looked like this. Back than he was up and about, IV bag, by his side, but he was walking, moving up and down.
She heard the door open and watched as Susan walked in with a char in her hand.
“Hey” She smiled at Abby, trying to bring reassurance but failed horribly.
“He should be up by now.” Abby answered, worry in her tone, pleading in her eyes.
“Carter gave him a heavy sleeping pill, it takes time, Abby”
“It’s been 30 hours and five minutes”
Susan rolled her eyes; Abby could be just like a kid “He’ll be fine. His heartbeat has been normal all this time, no sudden chances, and the risk of a second heart attack has passed. He is fine. Meanwhile I heard Sam is packing out of his place”
Abby finally looked up into Susan’s eyes. “You’re blaming me for this”
Susan’s eyes opened wide. “What? No! Abby this isn’t your fault.” She protested, though part of her had doubts and Abby could feel it.
“If I hadn’t let him in, If I didn’t sleep with him, none of this would be happening because he would be ok! He was ok, he was great., he was happy and I ruined that. Sam shouldn’t be leaving, I should leave him, I should just… … …”
Abby suddenly jumped up, moving to grab her coat and start to move out, but Susan stopped her from going any further.
“Listen to me. Luka wasn’t happy with Sam; you know that, I know that, hell even Sam knows that. Abby they have been fighting, since they started, actually they have fought since they met, they kept hanging on, because Alex seemed o adore Luka, but once Steve showed up again, all of that tumbled down and things have gone from bad to worse but, you on the other hand, he’s happy with you”
“Susan my relationship with Luka was a mess, … … You weren’t here, you didn’t see it”
“I might have not seen it, but I saw the consequences of breaking up, I saw what it did to him and to you and what I do still see every day, every time you’re near him and it doesn’t matter if you’re alone or with someone, this man lights up. And you know me, I’m a huge fan of Carter’s but You and Luka… … … I don’t know how to put it; it’s like, you’re made for each other. Am I making any sense at all?” Susan asked at the end, rolling her eyes to herself as she wondered rather her words had come the way she had planed it or not.
Abby smiled, much sense she hadn’t made, but still she got what Susan really wanted to say and so she nodded.
“Great, now stick around here. And call me when he wakes up. Recovery has to start at some point, right?” Susan blinked at Abby who still looked a little confused and guilty. “Don’t you think Sam should stay here?”
“No” Susan closed the door behind her.
Abby took her place again, his hand in hers. She still felt guilty, she still felt like this was mostly her fault, like they shouldn’t have slept together… … … but than again, this had been the chance, the chance to get him back and to make right all that had gone wrong the first time and she feared that if she hadn’t grabbed this chance, she would have lost him forever.
“You’re going to be ok. I swear! We will be ok”! She kissed his hand, like she had done many times before and the instinct of this action just made it feel like it was right, perfect.
His eyes felt heavy, like stone. Opening them, even slightly felt like trying to lift up a truck. But he kept trying, again and again and the more he tried the more he managed to open. He could so far, see a room, hospital room; Abby’s shadow.
Relief washed over when he saw her shadow and a smile managed to spread on his lips.
She was holding his hand. He could feel her touch warming him up.
He could hear the talking, Susan? She was talking about his heartbeat. It was ok. She said heart attack?
Abby said something about 30 hours.
Wow, that’s a long sleep, he should open his eyes.
What the hell did Carter give him?!
Sam was leaving his apartment! God! Would she ever talk to him again? And Alex? How was he handling this? He never had a chance to defend himself. Jesus!
Abby let go of his hand! Why?
Her fault?! No it wasn’t her fault! It was his own dam fault! He should have taken the break; he should have talked to Sam before sleeping with Abby.
She was leaving; he could hear the footsteps. STOP HER! SUSAN STOP HER!! God, open your eyes; don’t let her leave! Say something!!
Susan, did! Wow!!
Right, she was right, he wasn’t happy with Sam, no, too much, fighting, bickering?! God he had longed to end that relationship, but Alex had been there, and how could he do that?
Abby was staying!
She took a hold of his hand again.
Relief washed over him, once again and he drifted off. He’d give it another hour!
Abby would stay. She wasn’t leaving, he’d be fine, they’d be fine!.
He opened his eyes. This time they weren’t so heavy. They were lighter, much lighter.
She was smiling at him. “Hey, there sleepy head”
He had to smile wider “Hey. ... ... ... ... ... ... Guess you were right, hum?” He stated, smiling to make the awkwardness go away.
“I wish I hadn’t been.” She said a little more serious. This wasn’t funny at all. Why did he always do that?
“Sorry” he whispered, caressing her hand with his thumb as he saw the pain in her eyes.
“How are you? Are you feeling any pain at all? Nausea?”
Luka shook his head. “I’m fine. Just a little tired, that’s all.”
Abby smiled running her hands on his chest, the little hair, danced between her fingers. She loved this. She really didn’t know why, but it was so catchy somehow and it always grabbed her attention, he way the hair on his chest danced between her fingers.
“Guess the 8th round will have to wait, hum?” Luka smiled like a naughty 8 year old.
“You’re lucky I don’t have a pillow to throw on your head right now” Mock anger in her tone and in eyes.
He laughed. God it was good to hear him laugh again. For split seconds as they resuscitated him, she thought she’d never hear it again.
A hand ran through his hair. Her eyes said the words, her mouth never dared to say.
“I’ll get Susan, she wanted to talk to you”
“Abby. She was right. All of it” He dared to say.
“You heard it?”
“My eyes felt so heavy. I couldn’t open them.”
Abby nodded and smiled. She couldn’t say anything, she didn’t know how or even what to say at all. Susan’s words ringing in her ears, She made him light up, she made him happy, they were meant for each other and it wasn’t her fault.
“Abby?!”
“Yeah?”
“I need to talk to Alex” Luka stated
Abby sighed. She wasn’t waiting for this, or wasn’t she? Things had gone too fast and he hadn’t defended himself, let alone talked to Alex, he had to have one chance to at least talk to the kid. It wasn’t fair not to let him, and besides Alex had come upstairs at least 10 times so the kid still cared.
“One step at a time. But you will” She smiled as she made it to the door.
“Thank you”
