New update!!! I hope you like it and please don't kill me
Chapter 9: Blues in the nightMinneapolis – the largest city in Minnesota, the Lake City which lay on both banks of the Mississippi. All that crossed Abby’s mind when she was arriving there. Her mother already waited to pick her up. She was on her meds, Abby knew it the first moment she was seeing her. She looked good, her life was okay. Abby gave her a little smile and Maggie embraced her daughter.
“Good to see you.”, Maggie said and their embrace parted. They looked each other deep in the eyes and Maggie knew that something bad must have happened. But she didn’t wanted to push her and so they drove to her apartment in silence.
Dubrovnik – the historic city on the Adriatic Sea coast, with this beautiful ancient centre. Luka kept staring outside, he was standing in his father’s hospital room. Fortunately his father woke up from coma and was doing fine. He had to spent some more days here in hospital. He was sleeping right now and Luka was with him, staring out the window. How he missed Croatia. His Croatia, his home. But he couldn’t stop thinking about Abby. She was in his dreams, she was in his mind all day long. He even believed to see her in a street in Dubrovnik. He wished she would step into this room right now.
It was getting darker, the evening arrived and Abby was sitting on her mother’s couch, drinking some coffee. Maggie sat right next to her in an armchair. They didn’t talked that much since she arrived. Maggie felt uncomfortable, she was her mother and she didn’t knew what exactely was going on.
“Abby, you know you can talk to me, I’m your mother. I …”, she said and stopped, when Abby was looking at her. Tears in her eyes, some made their way down her cheeks. “Honey …”, she whispered. “Please talk to me.”, she pleaded. Abby looked to the ground, wiping her tears away.
“I left Chicago because I couldn’t go on there, my life’s a mess. Everything’s screwed up. I …”, Abby explained. New tears were welling up in her eyes.
“What happened?”, Maggie wanted to know. Abby had no strength to answer, it still hurt too much. “Abby, I know that there is something … something must have happened. And I don’t know what. I just want to help you.”
“You can’t help me.”, Abby interrupted her mother. She stared in her eyes. “I … had an abortion, because …”, her voice broke down and Maggie got closer to her daughter, embracing her.
“Sshh …”, she tried to calm her down.
“I got raped, mom.”, Abby whispered.
A few days later in Croatia, Luka’s father was discharged from hospital. Luka was happy that everything came out okay. He was sitting, with a bottle of beer in his hands, on his father’s terrace, looking over the sea. He could taste the salty air, he heared the waves. He closed his eyes and there she was again: Abby …
“Okay, what’s wrong with you?”, Niko asked and Luka opened his eyes, staring at him. Niko took place next to his brother, who’s face was priceless.
“What do you mean?”, Luka asked him.
“You’re back at home, our father is doing great after his heart attack. Everything’s okay. And you are looking like it would rain cats and dogs.”, Niko explained and Luka smiled a bit. “What’s her name?”, he asked.
“Abby.”, Luka said after some seconds and looked towards the sea again.
“The same Abby you were together with a year ago?”, he asked and Luka nodded. “And what is going on between the two of you?”
“It’s complicated. I mean, she is going through a hard time right now. She is living with me, I’m there for her because she needs someone, a friend. And I … I realised that I’m still in love with her. I never stopped loving her. I need her …”, Luka explained and took a sip from his beer. “How could I not love her? She’s amazing.”.
“Then tell her, tell her exactely this.”
“It’s the wrong time.”, Luka explained and his brother stood up.
“Call her, before it’s to late.”, Niko said and left him. Luka took another sip from his beer, before he grabbed his mobile phone. Dialing his home number, his mind was racing. What was he going to say? He didn’t knew. But again just his mail box was answering.
“Hey Abby, I hope everything’s allright with you. My father is doing great, he was discharged today and I … I’m coming home tomorrow. I … I miss you Abby. I can’t wait to see you again.”, Luka said and hung up …
It was already night when Luka arrived in Chicago again, he took a cab and drove home. He was anxious to see her again. The steps to his apartment door seemed like an eternity to him. He grabbed his keys and opened the door. Everything was dark, he stepped in and turned the lights on.
“Abby?”, he called into his living room. He took off his coat and moved upstairs to her room. He carefully opened the door, trying not to wake her. He was surprised when he noticed that she wasn’t there. She was nowhere. He checked the whole apartment. When he finally got to the kitchen he saw her note. He sat down to a chair and read her last words:
“Dear Luka,
I can’t describe how I am feeling right now. And I don’t want to know how you are feeling, because it would make me probably cry. It was not easy for me to leave. But I hope you understand, that I had to. My life’s a complete mess. And I don’t see a future in Chicago. I had to go …
I want to thank you for everything, I don’t know where I would be without you now. You saved my life, you were there for me, you dried my tears and I am so grateful for that. I am. I realised that I have to go on and you have to go on too. I can’t stay with you forever, you have to live your own life. I would be a burden. I don’t want to pull you down with my problems.
Thanks again, you are amazing.
Yours, Abby”Tears were rolling down his face, she left. Forever. How could she do that? He kind of understood her, but he was angry at the same time. Like in trance he stood up and walked to his phone, checking his mail box. He hoped that she might had called, he wished to hear her voice again. But instead of her, he only was hearing his own voice:
“I … I miss you Abby. I can’t wait to see you again.”.
