Okay guys...since I got such good reviews on my last fic, I decided to start another one. I hope you like it!
Susan sat out side of Abby’s delivery room. The hallway was dark and quiet. It was late; the only people in the hall were the nurses doing their rounds and those expecting father’s waiting on every one of their wives needs. Emily was asleep in Susan’s lap. Her teddy was under her arm and her blanket was draped over her legs. Abby had been in labor now for almost 12 hours. Susan glanced down at her watch for the forth time in 15 minutes. Just as she glanced back up Doctor Coburn came out. Susan slowly stood up, careful not to wake Emily. “How is she?”
“Tired, but she’s alright.”
“And the baby?”
“He’s fine.” Susan sighed a breathe of relief. Janet smiled. “You can go in now if you like.”
“Thanks.” Susan half smiled and adjusted Emily in her arms before stepping inside.
Both Abby and Luka turned their heads toward the door when they heard it open. Luka had a broad smile on his face. “Hi.” He said in a whisper.
“Hi.” Susan smiled and walked over to the bed.
In his arms, Luka held a sleeping bundle. “He’s beautiful.” Susan said smiling down at the tiny infant in his arms.
“He looks just like his daddy.” Abby smiled and moved the blanket so she could see the baby’s face.
There was whimpering from the incubator next to the bed and Susan looked over. She was surprised to see another infant wrapped in the same blue blanket.
Susan looked from the baby to Abby. “Yea, we were surprised too.” Abby chuckled.
“Turns out, this little guy was hiding behind his big brother.” Luka smiled as the baby wrapped his tiny hand around Luka’s pinkie finger.
“Congratulations.” Susan’s smile was now ear to ear.
“Thank you.” Abby leaned over and took the other baby from his incubator.
“Do you have names yet?”
“This is Matthew Joseph.” Luka played with Matthew’s hand.
“And this is Andrew Stephen.” Abby continued adjusting the hat on his head.
“Can I hold one?”
Abby and Luka both laughed. “Sure.” Luka said carefully standing up. “You can put Emily down over there.” Luka used his elbow to indicate to the chair in the corner of the room. Susan carefully placed Emily down in the chair. She stirred and then settled back down. Susan took Matthew from Luka and began to rock back and forth with him. Luka sat back down on the edge of the bed and smiled at Susan and Matthew.
“What are you going to do now?” Susan rocked around in a circle. “I mean you didn’t really plan on having two of them.” Susan played with Matthew’s hand as she talked.
Abby looked at Luka with a bit of concern. “She’s right Luka. We weren’t planning on bringing two babies home. We only have one carrier, one crib, we have the double stroller, but that’s not going to work with three kids.”
“Abby calm down.” Luka laughed. “Don’t worry about it. Tomorrow, I’ll take Emily and we can pick up another carrier. And the boys can share a crib for now until we get another one.” Luka smiled at Abby. “It’ll all be taken care of by the time they are ready to come home.”
Matthew began to cry and Susan handed him back over to Luka.
“I think he maybe hungry.” Luka said.
“I think your right.”
“I’ll switch with you.” Luka and Abby awkwardly switched infants. As Abby settled in with Matthew, Andrew began to cry.
“Oh, it’s okay buddy. I’m almost done with your brother.” Abby reached her free hand over and touched Andrew’s head.
“Daddy?” Emily sat up and rubbed her eyes.
Luka turned and smiled at Emily. “Hi sweetie.”
“Why’s the baby cryin?”
“He’s hungry.”
“Can you make him stop? I’m trying to sleep.”
“Emily Grace. That’s not very nice.” Luka scolded.
“Luka.” Luka turned towards Abby. She gave him a reassuring look. “It’s okay. You’re going to have to give her some time to warm up to them.”
Luka turned back around to face Emily. “I’m sorry sweetie.”
“It’s okay Daddy.”
“Did you want to come see your new brothers?” Susan asked walking over to her.
Emily nodded and Susan scooped her up and carried her over to the bed. “Two babies?” Emily said looking from the babies to Susan.
Susan nodded.
“When you have two babies born at the same time, it’s called twins.”
“Twins?” Emily restated making sure she got it right.
“Ah huh.” Luka smiled. “This is Andrew, and that one is Matthew.”
Abby had finished up with Matthew and was now patting his back to get him to burp. Once he did, Abby and Luka switched off again.
“Daddy, I’m tired.” Emily rested her head on Susan’s chest.
“You ready to go home?” Susan bounced her.
“Yea.” Emily said through a yawn.
“Okay, say bye to Mommy and Daddy.”
“Bye Daddy. Bye Mommy.”
“Bye baby.” Luka stood up and gave her a peck on the cheek.
“You be good for Susan, okay?”
“Okay Mommy. I love you.”
“I love you too sweetie.”
“I’ll be by tomorrow okay, and then you and I have some errands to run.”
“Okay daddy.”
Emily reached out her hand and placed it on Matthew’s head. “Be gentle.” Luka said.
“Bye bye Matthew.” Emily waved to Andrew. “Bye bye Andrew.”
