Six years. She had survived six years without him. The night of his death was still vivid in her mind, as if it had happened last night. She shook the image of him out of her mind, grabbed her bag, and started walking to her car. For being only 17 years old, she was very mature for her age. She didnt do drugs, worked hard on her school work, was home at curfew. What was the point in going out anyway? Her life ended the same night his did.
7 years earlier.
The First Encounter
Abby opened her curtains to see a moving van pull in to the house across the street from hers. two adults, one boy. a very cute boy. she stepped out of her house and sat on her steps to watch them unload. the boy across the street had done the same, so Abby walked over to meet him. She cautiously approached him, and as she looked up she stopped in her tracks. He had the most amazing eyes she had ever seen.
"Hi. Im Luka."
"Im Abby. I live across the street and i saw you sitting here..and i uh, well i just wanted to meet you." she stumbled on her words. Being nervous was not something she was used to, why was she being like this? Summer had just started, but Abby was going to be in the 4rd grade next year.
"What grade are you going to be in?" she asked.
"4th. You?" For some reason her heart swelled at the thought of them being in the same grade.
"Oh, uh me? Im going to be in 4th grade to. Maybe we'll be in the same class?"
"That would be nice to have a familiar face in my class."
"Abby! Time for dinner!" Maggie called out the window.
"Well I gotta go." She said with a quick wave. He watched as she turned away and ran to her house. She sure was nice. No one in Croatia was ever like that to him. There was something about her that just made him smile.
"Did you meet our new neighbors?" Maggie asked while setting the table.
"Yeah. Luka and me are going to be in the same grade." Abby said with a smile. After she left his house she couldnt stop smiling. It was those eyes. She never noticed anyone elses but she just seemed to be drawn to his.
"What are you smiling for?" Maggie said giving her a quizical look.
"Just something funny Natasha told me on the phone. Some stupid joke." Abby had always been a bad liar, but Maggie knew it had something to do with Luka, so she didnt press the situation.
"I think you two are going to get along wonderfully." Maggie said.
1st Day of School
Abby walked into her classroom with Natasha and saw Luka sitting at his desk.
"Thats the boy I was telling you about." She whispered.
"Oh wow hes cute." She said. Abbys little 4th grade mind had no idea what love was, but she was soon going to find out.
"Hey Luka. Im glad we're in the same class this year."
"Oh hey Abby. yeah so am I. Would you like to sit next to me?" Abby looked over at Natasha, who gave her the thumbs up sign.
"Sure."
----------------------------------
Abby and Luka became best friends. Of course Natasha wasnt happy about this because she never saw Abby anymore, but Abby didnt care, she had Luka.
It was the end of the school year and Abby and Luka had been friends for exactly one year. They had many plans for the summer, at least they thought they did.
"Wanna come over for dinner tonight? Moms making spaghetti and meatballs." Abby said while finishing her last homework assignment of the year.
"Ooh yum. I'd love to." Luka said with a smile on his face. He loved eating at Abbys house. There was always something going on.
"Luka you're drooling on your paper." Luka quickly closed his mouth, embarrased.
"I was not."
"Ok, whatever you say." Abby said laughing.
Luka made his way over to Abby's, and the sun had already started to set. He saw Abby running towards him with a smile on her face.
"What are you doing?" Luka asked.
"C'mon, we're sneaking away."
"Can't we eat first im starving?" Abby pulled out a couple rolls from her pocket.
"Here eat these you big baby."
"I am not a baby. And why are we sneaking away? I thought your mom was making an elaborate dinner?"
"Well she was until Eric got sick, believe me you dont want to be in that house right now. It smells like barf." She said making a face.
"Where are we going then? Do you want to just go to my house? Its already getting dark."
"Luka why are you always being so cautious? This is the first day of summer and i want to spend it outside with you, not cooped up in a house..that smells like barf. If you dont want to then fine but im going." She gave him that look that he just couldnt resist. Plus he didnt want her outside alone.
"Alright alright Ill come with you. Any place you got in mind?"
"Just follow me." Abby said taking his hand. They walked down the street for a couple minutes. Abby had a secret spot she hadnt shown luka yet, it was her summer hideaway. Abby made her way through some bushes by a cemetary. she didnt like the cemetary but her "spot" wasnt touching it, so she felt safe. She ducked under a branch and held it up for Luka so he could see the cleared out spot she made the night her Dad had left. It wasnt a big spot because it was under a tree, but enough so the both of them could sit and talk.
"This is amazing." Luka said. "when did you do it?"
"Well my dad left when i was seven, and since my mom was off her meds she wasnt watching me anyway, so i came here and cleared out all the branches, and made this." She said gesturing with her arm.
"Hey Abby, i uh, well, i just want to say that your my best friend and that i..i..i love you." Luka said in a rush. He had been wanting to say this to her for a very long time, and this seemed like the perfect spot. Abby looked at him and smiled.
"I love you to Luka, and im very glad you and i are friends, because honestly, i dont think i would be who i am without you." Abby said, and she could feel tears in her eyes, but she blinked them back. They didnt need to say anything more, they could feel it.
Suddenly they heard two men talking in low voices, like they were planning something. Then one of the men started yelling, but Abby and Luka were to scared to hear what they were saying. They knew the men were in the cemetary, and since the cemetary was in front of them, they had to wait until the men left. Luka took Abbys hand and gave it a reasuring squeeze. They thought the men had left, and they were about to check when they heard a gun being fired. Luka pulled Abby back but he could still see out through the branches. One of the men had pulled a gun on the other man and shot him, right there in the cemetary. How ironic, Luka thought. He was so nervous that his legs were shaking, and he could feel Abby shaking as he held her. His leg slipped and snapped a twig, and that was all it took for the man with the gun to hear and run over to see who was there. Abby and Luka held there breaths, but Lukas watch started going off. The man pulled Luka and Abby out of there hiding spot and started yelling at them.
"What are you two doing in there? Were you spying on me? What did you hear or see?!" He began talking to himself while holding onto there shirts.
"They know to much, they've seen to much, i have to get rid of them." Abby looked at Luka terrified, and in that moment Luka knew he had to save Abby. He grabbed the mans hand that was holding Abbys shirt and bit him as hard as he could. The man screamed out in pain and punched Luka, but he let go of Abby.
"Run Abby run! Dont wait for me! Ill be ok!" Luka yelled at her as the man held his hand, getting angrier as Luka yelled at Abby. Abby took off running but could hear the struggle betweent he man and Luka. Luka was no match for the full grown man, he was only 10. Abby turned around in time to see the man take out his gun and shoot Luka straight in the chest.
"NOO!! LUKA!!" Abby screamed. She ran back and grabbed the mans hand with the gun in it. The man was taken by surprise and didnt have time to react. She grabbed the gun, pulled the trigger, and watched him fall to the ground. After she was sure he wasnt going to get up, she ran over to Luka.
"Luka, Luka, wake up, come on i need you to open your eyes!" Luka slowly opened his eyes, but his breathing was fast, and he could hardly catch his breath.
"Luka do you think you can walk? anything? we need to get you to a house so i can use the phone. Luka!"
"Abby, im so sorry." Luka said in a barely audible whisper.
"NOOO!!! LUKA WAKE UP! YOUR NOT DOING THIS! GET UP!! OPEN YOUR EYES! ANYTHING! LUKA!!!! oh god no please. Luka...."
