Another great update! but I'm a little confused... Abby's last name is Lockhart, but she told Luka she had never been married? Lockhart was Richard's last name.. so is she lying about being married?

ah yes, very perceptive... all shall be revealed in due course. oh yes. here's a little more for the time being. *** Wednesday Luka sat in the morning meeting not paying much attention to what was being said. It was a motivational speech of some sort or other; he’d heard it all before. Abby was sitting two rows in front of him and he couldn’t take his eyes off the strands of hair that had fallen loose from her clip. The hair curled lightly round her face and neck and he longed to brush it behind her ear, just for an excuse to touch her. He wasn’t sure what it was about her, she was beautiful, but he’s met beautiful women before. It was the toughness she showed, the barrier she wore for the rest of the world, a barrier he’d seen slip that day in the sports field, the day she’d asked him to forget. She was fragile, but no one knew it. He wanted to get to know her, the feeling was so strong it was almost scary, considering he’d only spoken to her a few times. The man he was sitting next to was Guy Philips, a Spanish teacher who had latched onto Luka as the only other man in the language department. Luka wasn’t hugely fond of the man, but he saw no reason to dislike him. Guy leant over to Luka with a smirk on his face and whispered with hot, smelly breath into his ear. “pretty, isn’t she?” “sorry?” “Miss Lockhart. You’ve been staring at her all through this meeting, and I can’t say I blame you.” Guy let out a chuckle and moved slowly away from Luka. There it was. The reason to dislike Guy Philips. He was a slimy git. Luka shifted away from him and tried not to stare at Abby anymore, feeling suddenly like a dirty old pervert for looking at her, as though Guy’s creepiness had infected him. He sighed heavily and attempted to listen to what was being said by the short, dark haired woman at the front of the room, but finding it impossible settled for staring at her hair as it trembled oddly with every word she felt the need to say with force. Tim glanced slowly back at Luka, having been aware of his staring throughout the meeting. As the head of department finally let them leave he rushed over to Abby who’d been sitting a few seats away from him. “did you see?” he whispered as he took hold of her arm. “see what?” she whispered back with mock theatrical suspicion. “he was staring at you the whoooole time.” Abby glared at Tim and shook her head slowly “you are actually insane aren’t you. Next thing I know he’ll be sending me messages through the steam rising off his coffee” Tim frowned. “something tells me you’re not taking this seriously.” Abby smiled at her friend and left the room. No matter how much she wanted to ignore what Tim had said, she had in truth caught a glimpse of Luka that morning and through the whole meeting he could feel his eyes on the back of her neck. No matter how much she’d been telling herself it was paranoia, or wishful thinking, what Tim had said had made her feel stupidly hopeful about the whole situation. She couldn’t keep the smile off her face as she walked down the corridor towards her first lesson of the day. *** The day passed slowly for Luka. It was filled with the usual trouble, bored teenage boys and swooning teenage girls. He’d sat on the bench all through lunch break, hoping he’d be joined by Abby but finally giving up and returning to his classroom feeling just a little too disappointed. Apart from the morning meeting he hadn’t seen her all day and he couldn’t think of a single plausible excuse to visit the English office. So he sat alone in the languages staff room, sipping his coffee and getting some paperwork done as the last of his colleagues went home. The hours passed and he couldn’t think of a single reason to rush home. At 6 o’clock his stomach rumbled loudly and he frowned. It was dinner time so he walked out of his office in the direction of the wondrous treats that the vending machine had to offer. ***

wednesday part 2...
***
“God damn you bastard machine!” Abby kicked the vending machine hard. It had been a long unpleasant day of lessons and meetings and even the simple pleasure of a chocolate bar was being denied to her by the evil of the vending machine. She groaned angrily and pulled more change out of her pocket. 16p. completely pointless. Letting out a heavy sigh she let her head fall against the vending machine, hating it and all its useless money eating tendencies. Luka walked into the canteen and stopped dead in his tracks. She was there, standing with her head rested dejectedly against the vending machine. He smiled, there was certainly something interesting about this woman. Walking towards her slowly he stopped a few steps from her, seeing that she still hadn’t noticed his presence he cleared his throat causing her to jump out of her skin “Mother of God!” She turned to him with wide eyed shock and he couldn’t help but smile. “sorry. Didn’t mean to scare you.” She took a deep breath and nodded. “that’s ok...not many people stay this late...” she looked down, not sure what to say. He smiled kindly and gestured towards the vending machine “you having a fight with the vending machine?” She smiled, feeling very silly that he’d witnessed her banging her head against an inanimate object. “The bastard stole my money.” Luka chuckled and walked towards it, giving it a good hard kick that sent three of Abby’s favourite chocolate bars tumbling into the vending machine opening. He leant down and picked them up offering them to her. She grinned. “wow. I’m impressed. Have you had some sort of training for that?” Luka laughed, “my brother worked as a vending machine technician for a while, he taught me all the tricks I need.” Abby smiled and handed one of the chocolate bars back to him. “you up for a chocolate break?” He nodded and put another few coins in the machine, pressed the buttons then gave the machine a quick shove, sending two cans of coke into the tray. He pulled them out and passed one to Abby. She took it and smiled. “you better be careful with that sort of thing, I’m so impressed by you right now everything else is bound to be a bit of a let down.” Luka laughed as they began to walk out of the canteen. “well I’ll just have to try my best to impress you.” She looked up at him as they walked and a wide smile spread across her face. “wanna see something cool?” He raised his eyebrows “more cool than my vending machine tricks?” Abby laughed, “follow me” she turned into a small dark corridor that Luka hadn’t even noticed and began to climb what looked like an emergency fire escape ladder. She looked down at him and grinned “come on” Luka clambered out of the small opening at the top of the long steel ladder and looked over to where Abby was sitting. They were on the roof of the college and the view was truly amazing. He sat down next to Abby and nodded. “Ok. You win. This is better than free chocolate.” She grinned over at him and they gazed at each other for a minute before suddenly become aware of how close they were. Abby looked down and started to eat her chocolate. Luka smiled and opened his can of coke, holding it up to Abby for her to join him in a clinking of coke cans. He took a sip of his coke and started to open the chocolate bar, “so, if anyone found out we were up here, how much trouble would we be in?” Abby laughed and nodded, quickly swallowing a mouthful of chocolate to answer his question, “well, if we were students, we’d probably be kicked out.” “Good thing we’re not students.” “It certainly is.” They smiled at each other and went back to enjoying the sugary snacks while gazing over the sunset orange lit houses. Somehow the silence wasn’t awkward. Without thinking about it too much they both sat on the roof for nearly an hour, just looking out at the world and enjoying the closeness that the small space was forcing upon them. Finally Abby glanced at her watch and they both knew they should go home. Without a word Luka stood up and offered a hand to Abby. After a brief pause she took his hand and let him pull her up. They stood for a minute, his hand still holding hers and their bodies close enough together that the heat was trapped between them. it was only a few seconds, but it felt so right, they both knew it. Parting hands slowly Luka smiled and held a hand out towards the exit. “ladies first.” Abby nodded and walked ahead, skillfully jumping down onto the ladder and starting to descend, leaving Luka to gaze one last time at the now darkening autumn sky with a contented smile.
***
Abby walked into her flat and threw her keys down onto the hall table. She smiled as her cat ran towards her, his tail raised in greeting. “Hey Stevie” she said as she leant down to pick up her big old cat. He purred loudly in her arms, his eyes closed in happiness. She kissed him on the head and dropped him onto the sofa as she walked towards the kitchen. Pouring herself a glass of juice she looked up as the phone rang. “Hello?” “Abby Lockhart? Is this she?” “yes Tim, this is she. How’s it going?” she sat down on the sofa, placing her now empty glass down on the coffee table and picking up the remote control. Stevie clambered onto her lap, purring and making bread as she stroked his ginger fur, absently flicking through the TV channels. “I’m good, looking forward to the ballroom dancing stars big final, tonight at 8:30 on channel 3, don’t miss it or you’ll be a social outcast tomorrow.” Abby laughed and turned the TV off, “for a clever guy you do watch some crap.” “I see the intellectual side of everything.” “There’s an intellectual side to ballroom dancing?” Tim sighed “Oh Abby, please don’t make me give you the ballroom dancing lecture again...” Abby shook her head and laughed. “well it doesn’t matter if I watch it or not because I wont be in tomorrow.” “what do you mean? You’re eloping already?” “shut-up. No. I’m on a stupid course about the importance of I.T within creative subjects.” “oooohhh...you poor dear...how long is it?” “It’s a two dayer. With an overnight stay in a delightful hotel.” “and by hotel they mean shit-hole.” Abby laughed, “yeah, well wish me luck.” “we will pray for you. To the goddess Cher, may the power of her wigs protect you.” “thanks.” “oh and don’t worry, me and Jen will keep Luka warm for you.” Tim let out a filthy laugh, causing Abby to rub her forehead in despair. “Goodnight Tim.” “night night my darling. Don’t let the I.T freaks steal your soul.” She hung up and let her head fall back onto the sofa. Stevie was curled up into a tight ball on her lap and she sat with her sleeping cat, feeling utterly ridiculous at just how miserable she was at the notion of not seeing Luka again until Monday.
