a bit of backstory: this is an alternative universe where Abby and Luka aren't doctors, but teachers living in London England teaching in a sixth form. Abby teached Eng. Lit and Luka teached French. this is intended as a fairly humerous fic, to balance out my other one and keep me sane. Luka's backstory is the same- family died in croatia, but Abby's story has a few alterations which will become apparent in due course.
anyway, hope you like it. yes, it's a little weird having no hospital, but hey, whoever said weird was bad?
Monday.
“Bloody hell have you seen the new French guy?” Jenny rushed into the English lit office, carrying a pile of books and papers with a mug of cold tea balanced strategically on the top.
“No we haven’t Jennifer, but we’re sure you’re going to tell us all about his wonderful bum”
Jenny scowled at Tim as he walked past her towards the photocopier, “don’t pretend you don’t care about his bum Tim, you raving poof!”
Tim arched a well groomed eyebrow at his short, chubby friend “I prefer the term 'screaming queen' thank you very much.”
Abby looked up from the book she was reading, unable to concentrate on the words as her colleagues bantered like children behind her.
“Ladies please, I only have twenty minutes left for lunch and I’ve had quite enough adolescent bitch fights all morning.”
Jenny sat down in her chair, dumping the books on her desk in an uneven pile and taking a sip of her tea, before pulling a disgusted face and placing the mug down beside a collection of three others on her desk. “I can’t believe neither of you want to hear about the new French teacher. He is disturbingly attractive. I’m telling you. It should be illegal.”
Tim laughed and went back to his desk. “Jenny my dear, not everyone is as sex deprived as you”
She glared at Tim, “piss off!”
Abby laughed and looked up at the clock “Jenny, you’re gunna be late for your meeting with Sue.”
Jenny looked up at the clock, her eyes widening with fear. “oh Bollocks!” she searched on her messy desk for the papers she needed, letting out a barrage of whispered obscenities before eventually running out of the room in a whirl of paper and spilled tea.
Tim waited for the door to slam behind her before zooming over on his swivel chair to sit next to Abby. “So seriously, have you seen the new guy?”
Abby looked up at Tim with a shocked smile on her face. “Are you kidding me?”
“Uh-uh girlfriend I am not” Tim said in a mock Gay New York accent. “He’s Buff!”
Abby stared at Tim in quizzical amusement. “He’s Buff?! Are you sixteen?”
“No, I just work with them, and you know what they say...”
Abby smiled sarcastically, “no, please enlighten me, what do they say?”
Tim Grinned. “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em!”
Abby laughed and stood up, picking up her book and her coffee. “very profound Tim.” She walked towards the door, only to have Tim block her way.
“Abigail, I kid you not, Jenny was right, the man is a God. Straight as they come unfortunately. You need to get in there, play the sexy American card.”
“You’re ridiculous you know that.”
Tim laughed and kissed Abby on the head, before letting her leave the office “you love me bitch.”
Shaking her head she walked out of the room and through the corridor, avoiding groups of rowdy teenagers as they sauntered through the halls heading for their next lesson.

A nervous first year A level student shuffled up to Abby’s desk as she stacked her papers back into their folder. Abby looked up and smiled. “Hi?”
“Hi, miss...”
Abby smiled kindly, “Call me Abby”
“Um ok... Miss, I was wondering whether we had to read the whole of Othello, coz my friend told me you could pass the exam from just reading stuff off the internet.”
Abby smiled and nodded. “Well...you do realize I’m an English Literature teacher? so I’m going to tell you to read the book. That’s kinda part of my job”
The girl stared at her and blinked dumbly.
Abby sighed, seeing she wasn’t dealing with the brightest of students. “you know, it’s that not long, Shakespeare plays are meant to be performed, so it should only take you about two or three hours to read. That’s really not long, considering you have your whole life ahead of you...hopefully...” Abby frowned and then looked up at the girl, noticing the shocked expression on her face. She laughed. “I’m sorry. Look, just do the homework I set, try and read as much as you can...who knows you may even enjoy it.”
The girl nodded and rushed out of the classroom to catch up with her friends. Abby sighed and picked up her folder, leaving the empty classroom and turning off the light. She walked out of the room and bumped immediately into a tall, dark-haired man, dropping her folder and its entire contents onto the floor.
“oh shoot!”
She bent down to pick up her stuff, not looking up as the man she’d bumped into knelt down with her to help.
“I’m sorry”
She shook her head, trying to get all the paper back into some sort of order “No it’s ok, I wasn’t looking...”
“Hard day?”
She looked up and blinked in shock at the man in front of her. This had to be the new guy, because he was without a doubt, disturbingly attractive. She forced a grin and nodded.
“um yeah, I guess...I’m sorry, we haven’t met, I’m Abby.” She offered a hand and grinned again as he took it in his, shaking her hand with a mixture of gentle tenderness and manly strength. She felt herself blush and had to look down for a second, trying desperately to regain some composure.
He smiled at her and handed her a bunch of papers. “I’m Luka Kovac, the new French teacher.”
“yeah I heard...” she took the papers and shoved them back into her folder “I mean, I heard we had a new French teacher.” She stared at him for another second before standing up. He joined her in standing and they looked at each other, before he grinned and cleared his throat. “So, you’re not from round here then?”
Abby shook her head, glad he’d managed to break the awkward silence with good, healthy small-talk. “No, I’m from America, Chicago actually, but I came here about ten years ago with a friend and I never went back...what about you, you’re not from France?”
“No, I’m Croatian. My wife was French so I picked the language up from her.”
“oh...” Abby nodded, gazing down at her feet. “she was French? Did France kick her out or something?” Abby let out an embarrassingly unladylike snort of laughter at her own joke. Then looked up at Luka to see whether he’d noticed just how ridiculous she was.
Luka laughed a soft laugh that made the hairs on the back of Abby’s neck stand up. He shook his head and looked down. “no, she um... she died. In croatia...”
Abby’s mouth dropped open and she blinked in shock. “Oh God. Oh god I’m so sorry.”
“no, it’s ok.”
“God, I’m an asshole.”
Luka laughed. “well, I don’t know you that well, but I’m sure you’re not an Asshole.”
Abby looked down in bewilderment then forced herself to smile up at him, her face red with shame. “I um, I better go, I have some work to do...essays to mark...” she backed away from him towards the English office. “It was nice meeting you” she turned from him then and rushed towards the office. Walking into the office she was greeted by the sight of Tim and Jenny crouched by the window, having watched the whole sorry event with manic grins on their faces. She stared at them in horror, before looking out the window to see that Luka was still standing in the hall, he caught her eye and waved and she waved back sheepishly before ducking down with Tim and Jenny who were laughing hysterically.
“It’s not funny!!!” she hissed furiously. They continued to laugh, in spite of her slapping them both in protest.
Madeline and Catherine walked in then, the two senior members of the English department who Tim, Abby and Jenny rarely spent any time with. They stared down at the younger teachers all huddled on their knees by the window, their laughter now vanished and replaced with embarrassment as they scrabbled to their feet and picked up their stuff, rushing out of the office with forced professionalism. Tim nodded at them, his usual camp mockery replaced with his straight, dull, teacher persona. “Night ladies”
All three walked quickly through the halls until they were outside before bursting into laughter. Tim shook his head and put an arm round Abby “now missy, we are going to the pub and you’re going to tell us every last filthy detail of your encounter with Mr. Gorgeous!”
Abby shook her head, trying to drop the smile from her face. “His name is Luka.”
Tim and Jenny exchanged a glance before simultaneously fluttering their eyelashes, puckering their lips and rushing after Abby theatrically blowing kisses in her direction. She rushed ahead, shaking her head in despair. “You seriously owe me drinks!”
