Abby and Luka have been together about six months now and by all accounts, it’s been wonderful. Luka feels like the ghosts of the past have finally been laid to rest and Abby feels secure and content. They can’t believe how lucky they are to have found each other.
Is it possible for things to stay this perfect?
Luka shifted the brown grocery bag to his other hip as he reached into the pocket of his jeans for his keys. He could hear the TV before he opened the door to his apartment and knew Abby was watching “Jeopardy.” He smiled to himself. She was terrible at it, but persisted in watching it, hoping she might actually get one right.
“Hello,” he called out.
“Hi,” she replied. She raised up off the couch so she could see him over the back. “So what’s tonight’s gastrointestinal adventure?”
Luka chuckled and began pulling items out of the bag.
“Lamb with vegtables. Dessert is a surprise.”
“What, no cabbage…thing?”
“Hey, that’s a Croatian staple.”
“Yes, I know you say that but…”
“You’ll like this, trust me.”
“You said that about the cabbage.”
Luka balled up a kitchen towel and tossed it at Abby, who laughed. She folded her arms across the couch, watching him as he assembled all the ingredients on the counter.
“Where did you learn to cook anyway?”
“My father. And, Danjiela taught me a few things, too.”
“Your father cooks, too?”
Luka nodded. “Yea, he’s pretty good.”
“About the only thing Maggie taught me was how to boil water. And Richard, well…let’s just say the Thai place on the corner eventually gave us stock.”
Luka grinned and started prepping his lamb. Abby swung her legs over the couch as started walking toward the kitchen.
“Need help with anything?”
Luka shook his head. “No, I got it.” He kissed her on the forehead. “Just prepared to be dazzled.”
She laughed. “Ok, but please, no more cabbage.”
“Yea, yea, yea.”

Abby held her hand to her forehead and rolled her neck around a few times. She had been off yesterday and was just starting her shift, but she was exhausted. Maybe this place was finally getting to her. Coffee. She’d get coffee and that would help her get going. She was reaching into her purse for money when Luka came into the lounge.
“Hi,” she smiled, her heart stopping at the sight of him in his brilliant blue shirt and the way the light caught her shiny black hair.
“Hey,” he said coming over to her and rubbing her shoulder. “How’re you feeling?”
“I just think I need some coffee and that’ll help perk me up.”
He nodded. “Ok. Let me know if I can do anything.”
Abby looked at him gratefully and grabbed his hand in hers and kissed it.
“If you can promise me no MVA’s or GSW’s…”
“I’m good, but I’m not that good.”
She laughed. “I’m heading out to the Roach Coach. You want something?”
He shook his head. “No, I’ve got a leg lac waiting for me in sutures.” He kissed her forehead. “See you soon.” He adjusted his stethoscope and left the room. Abby stood staring after him for a few moments, her heart still beating from being near him. She couldn’t get over how much she loved him. How much he loved her. She shook her head wryly and headed out to get coffee.

Abby was sleeping peacefully in the on-call room when Haleh flung the door open, letting unmerciful light into the room
“Abby, the guy in curtain one wants to leave AMA.”
Abby rubbed her eyes, trying to adjust to the fluorescent assault.
“Did psych make it down?”
“Called em’ three times. Said they’re backed up.”
Abby let out a terse breath.
“They’re always backed up,” she mumbled. She flopped back down. “Alright, I’ll be right there.”
“Abby, you ok? You haven’t been looking all that good today.”
“Yea. I think the donut I got from the Coach this morning was…old.”
“You know it’s only good for coffee.”
Abby took in a deep breath. “I was desperate.”
“You know what desperation leads to.”
“Yea. Keep the guy in bed, and I’ll call psych one more time so I can bitch slap them.”
“I’ll do what I can.”
Abby stood and wobbled a bit. She had to grab on to the nightstand to regain her balance. What was wrong with her? She waited a few moments until she felt stable, then went out to call psych.”
