So, this was meant to be a OneShot, but that's totally NOT going to happen. I'm starting mid-season 12, but from there it's totally my prerogative.
The title and concept for this fic were inspired by the song "Without You" from the musical Rent.
PLEASE comment, whether you liked the Fic or not. I NEED feedback to know what people are thinking!
Abby looked down at the piece of molded plastic in her hand. Barely believing her eyes, she shook the pregnancy test a few times, willing the results to change. “This CANNOT be happening,” she mumbled.
“What can’t be happening?” Neela asked as she walked into the bathroom. Immediately, Abby cursed herself for testing somewhere so public.
“Oh, nothing,” Abby half-shouted as she tried to flush the test down the toilet. Incredibly, it slid down the drain easily enough, and Abby quickly exited the stall. “No, I’m fine. Just a migraine, that’s all.” Abby washed her hands and left Neela standing in the bathroom, looking confused. She walked slowly to the admit desk, Frank’s comment about her needing a caffeine jolt barely registering. Glancing at her first chart, Abby learned that she had a slip and fall in Exam 2.
“Good luck with that one,” Ray said as he approached the desk. “The patient fell at final dress for the Chicago stop of the Rent tour. The rest of the cast came with her, and they haven’t stopped singing since.”
“Thanks for the warning,” Abby muttered, rolling her eyes. As she approached Exam 2, she could hear strains of a song floating through the air. When Abby opened the door, the song immediately got louder and she could make out the words, “There’s only now, there’s only here. Give into love, or live in fear. No other path, no other way. No day but today!” Unable to shake a sudden feeling of uneasiness, Abby shuddered as she though about how closely the lyrics mirrored her current situation.
“Sorry to interrupt the concert, but I need to assess the patient. Which one of you is Arianda Fernandez?” Abby looked around the crowded room until she saw a hand raised. A petite woman with dark hair raised her hand from the bed. Abby pushed past the crowd of actors, all of whom were still in costume, to get to Arianda, who was wearing perhaps the craziest outfit of all. Abby looked her patient over, noting the blue hologram spandex pants, the fishnet top, and the baby giraffe print boots.
“Oh,” Arianda laughed, “my character, Mimi, dances in a strip club. The CatScratch Club, if we’re getting specific.”
“So, uhh, how exactly did you fall?” Abby asked, trying to imagine what Arianda had been doing.
“The strip club dance involves me getting up on a railing and shaking it, and I fell back when my heel didn’t lock onto the pole.” Abby nodded, trying not to laugh at the mental image she was conjuring up.
An hour, four patients, and one grateful tour cast later, Abby was free to go. She dreaded going back to the apartment she was kind of sharing with Luka, because it would mean telling him. Abby collected her belongings from her locker, and left County. She didn’t know where she was going as she watched her breath from little white puffs in the frigid night air, but she couldn’t go to Luka’s apartment. She just couldn’t.
