They had each told two different, very emotional stories of tragic losses. They had both cried, and they hadn't even actually been on the date yet. That was just the car ride. Now they drove sitting in silence. still holding hands. "Are...you ok?" Luka asked, looking over at Abby, who had been more quiet and more emotional then him. She shook her head, snapping back into reality and looked over at him. "Yeah...I'm fine. Are you ok?"
"Yeah...you just seem quiet."
"So do you."
"..Only because you are." Luka said looking back to the road.
"Ohhh..is that why?"
"Yes."
"Where are we going?"
"Honestly..I don't know."
"Oh...do you know where we are?"
"I'm guessing somewhere in Chicago."
"So, basically you are just driving to no where in particular?"
"Not exactly...I have a place in mind..I just can't remember what its called....but I'll know it if I see it."
"How do you know you're going the right way?"
"I don't..I'm just hoping I am."
"I don't think you are."
"You don't even know where I'm going."
"Either do you."
"...Yes I do."
"Where?"
"Right there!" Luka said pointing, at a small building up the road..."I told you I knew where I was going." They pulled into the parking lot, and got out. There was a breeze in the air, and they could hear the choppy waters of Lake Michigan. The wind was blowing Abby's hair around, and Luka took her hand, leading her inside. It was a small restaurant, and almost every table had a couple sitting at it. There were young couples, old couples, and middle-aged couples. There were no families, no kids at all.
They sat at a booth in the corner. Outside was a perfect view of the lake. The moon and stars could be seen in the reflection. The waitress walked over, placed two glasses in front of them and filled each with wine and left. "What is this Prix Fixe?"
"Its this 3 course thing..you pick one appetizer, one main course and then a desert for only $90."
"Each?"
"Yeah..its a good deal."
"That’s $180 for two people to eat...plus the wine..tip.."
"Yeah...its ok."
"Soooo...I just pick 3 things."
"Yup."
"Ok." Abby said looking back to her menu. Luka looked up from his menu and over at Abby who looked very confused. "I don't know what to get..I don't know what any of this stuff is.."
"What course are you trying to pick out?"
"I'm still on appetizer."
"Do you like Crab?"
"Yeah."
"You should get Peeky Toe Crab."
"Peeky toe?"
"Yeah, its really good."
"Ok, I'll take your word for it…. What should I get for main course?" Abby asked setting her menu down, and looking over at Luka. "Uhh..I don't know..do you like fish?"
"Not really..only seafood I eat is shrimp, crab, lobster, things like that..not fishy...fish."
"Then I would suggest the...ribeye."
"Ok."
"Do you think you can handle desert on your own?" Luka asked jokingly. Abby couldn't help but smile. His was amazing. It went perfect with his dark hair and gorgeous blue eyes. "Yeah..I think I got desert covered."
“You’re sure?”
“Positive.” Abby opened her dessert menu, and Luka looked over at her, laughing at the expression on her face. “Oh wow, why is there so many choices? They have these two pages, just on cheese cakes..but then there is all the other desserts..how am I supposed to choose?”
“They are famous for their cheesecakes…I am getting the Dulce De Leche caramel.”
“That sounds good.”
“It is good.”
“I think I’ll get…White Chocolate Raspberry Truffle.”
“Good choice.”
The waitress came and took their orders, and while they waited, they talked. Telling stories about their kids. Luka talked about the ER. Abby talked about med school. Luka told her she should go back if it is that important to her. She said she would if she could. But she can’t. The waitress came back with the first course. Abby got the Peeky Toe Crab, and Luka got the Grilled Diver Sea Scallop. They ate some, and then switched plates.
“wow..this is the best food I have ever eaten in my life.”
“You think this is good..wait until course 2 comes.” Just as Luka said that, the waitress came back with Abby’s Grilled Prime Beef Ribeye, and his Roasted Elysian Fields Lamb. “You know..I could get you job at the hospital.”
“Doing what?”
“You could be a nurse.”
“I just can’t be a nurse….its not like anyone can be one…”
“You know how to put a line in right?”
“Yeah…but its been a couple years..”
“You can take blood pressure..find a pulse. Clean wounds..and all that other stuff nurses do right?”
“Yeah.”
“Then you could be a nurse.”
“I don’t know…”
“Do you want to work at that diner for the rest of your life?”
“Not really.”
“Then you should come work at the hospital…”
“I should?”
“You should….the boss likes me.. I could tell her to hire you.” Abby looked unsure. “It pays better.”
“But the hours are going to suck.”
“Don’t your hours suck now?”
“...Well... yeah.”
“You should think about it.”
“I will…I will definitely think about it.” Luka continued to look at her. Waiting for her to give an answer.
“Well…did you think about it?”
“No…” Abby laughed. “I need to sleep on it.”
“It will be fun.”
“Fun?”
“Yesssss….because I will be there.”
“What color are the nurses scrubs.”
“Light Blue.” Abby nodded…thinking about it some more.
“Do you not like light blue? We could have them changed.”
“No..I like blue..I’m just thinking about, if I want to do this….If I can do this.”
“You can do it.”
“But..I don’t even have a nurses liscence..or whatever you need to be a nurse…do you need anything?”
“I don’t really know…I think you would like it.. But, I will not pressure you into it… soooo, you think about it some more…. And we can talk about something else…” Luka picked up his glass and raised. “To us.” he said smiling at Abby. She smiled and picked her glass up. “And our first date.” She added.
“May there be many more.” Luka said, before they tapped there glasses together.
The waitress came back, and took their empty dinner plates, replacing them with dessert plates. Abby picked up her fork and stuck a big bite of cheese cake in her mouth. “mmmm…” She said in satisfaction. “This is the best cheese cake..I have ever had.”
“You have said that about everything…even the water.”
“Because everything is so good!" She said holding another bite in front of her mouth. "This has been fun Luka.”
“See… we already know we have fun together…so you working with me… would be even more fun!”
“I thought there was no pressure?”
“There isn’t…. I’m just stating a fact.” Abby nodded, and reached her arm over, stabbing her fork into the last bite of Luka’s cheesecake. He watched her bite it off her fork with his mouth open. “mmm, yours is good too…”
“I can’t believe you just ate my cheesecake.”
“Thanks.” Abby said smiling. “You could have some of mine..” She offered.
“I don’t want yours..” He laughed. She looked so cute and innocent. “I want mine back.”
She thought for a second and pushed her plate away, looking at Luka. “I think I know how to make it up to you.” Luka raised his eyebrows, and smiled at her. He started to ask “how” when she gently pressed her lips to his. When they parted, Abby kept her face right in front of his, looking into his beautiful eyes for a minute before sitting back. “That’s how.”
"Yeah...you just seem quiet."
"So do you."
"..Only because you are." Luka said looking back to the road.
