E4 are currently showing S10 here and I've just watched "Only Connect".
What the bloody hell were the writers going for when they nailed a permanent bitch face on Sam and made her so effing angry all. the. time.
Honestly, I tried to understand at the time (I thought they were going to keep them together and so was on the lookout for first steps on the road to softening her up) but looking at these episodes now, they're even worse than I remember.
Then again, S10 was a low point all round for me - Puffy Carter and Boney Wendell, no apparent idea as to what the hell Luka was about, Sam just unbearable for the most part, Jake the weirdo. Was it because NW was still dithering about whether to stay or go that we got so much "treading water"?

Honestly, I think Jake played an important part in Abby's character growth. He was the perfect guy with the perfect family....what she thought she was searching for. And it didn't make her happy. If she hadn't a chance to grab that and run, she would always be wonrin if it was still out there. Just my VHO.

OK, well I'll give you Jake as a means to an end for Abby, but what were they doing with Sam? Luka is plainly operating on the assumption that this is to be a comitted relationship and, regardless of how ready she was for that (she wasn't, it seems) why was she so bloody angry?
Carter and Wendell likewise. If it was supposed to show that Carter couldn't commit to anyone but Kem it made him look an idiot in the process. So committed to Kem and wanting to be with her that he embarked on an affair which hurt someone else. Feeble.

First, since this is my first post this year, I want to wish everybody a really Happy New Year and may all your hangovers be forgot and never brought to mind. Anyway….I just had to add my two cents. Even if S11 is a big blur to me. When Only Connect was written –I assume- the contracts weren’t signed and they were still trying to fill airtime, not actually having a resolution (or a path drawn) in mind, with any of the characters. I am probably wrong, I don’t know, but I think these episodes, the middle of S11 that is, weren’t actually leading anywhere, they languished the situations. But it’s beyond reason why they made Luka Alex II, in Sam’s eyes. Back when this started, in season 10, the beginning was far from perfect, not even once they were shown to be equals and their coming together was one of the worst I have seen in this show: for her, it didn’t matter who the provider of the “irregular sex” and Luka was in for the kid. Looking back, it seems like a plot device to show he was ready for a real relationship, but I am really trying to figure out what would’ve happened if GV would’ve not renewed his contract. I still hang on to my opinion that a Luka/Sam happily ever after was never in the cards. Ok…so they put obstacles in their paths…but their (both Sam’s and Luka’s) behavior was bad. TPTB wanted to make her independent, to show that even if one has to face an unwanted pregnancy during her high school years she could still make her own living, but not only Sam didn’t want any help, she was also blind to anyone who would try to give her a hand. It was something like “her way or the highway”. Luka, OTOH, was supposed to be a father figure – instead, he enabled Alex (giving him the head CT, splinting his hand when he wanted an excuse to skip gym and actually got to the point where Alex was more like his buddy than son – “You’re going down, you little freak”). I think that this whole storyline puts a big question mark above on the writers’ abilities to “do justice for the characters and have them come full circle”. But then again, I remember reading somewhere that people (some? the head writer? don’t know for sure) were fired from the writing staff when Zabel took over because of these storylines. The worst thing about this pairing was that she constantly gave me the impression she was dragging Luka down to her level. I like the character now, but they still seem from different worlds. I mean…it wasn’t so much about the cultural differences; their values were different, their perspectives and the environment they grew up in. Not even discussing the money issue (and Luka didn’t grow up rich or anything, as he said many times). I don’t know if I’m making myself understood here…I mean…take a look at Carter and Abby for instance: he was loaded; she had to beg the neighbors to get food for her and Eric when Maggie was maniac. He had a very distinct education, certain manners. And yet – without his fixing part – they seemed to be on the same side. With Sam and Luka…she was beneath him on so many levels that I really wouldn’t know where to begin. Just like she said in Canon City –that she seemed a trailer park version – only that this was my impression , the Cinderella without manners story, the girl who actually lives in a trailer park and the stellar student she happens to have as a class mate or something. I’m not saying that she lacks some brain cells but I couldn’t help but hate the fact that Luka reduced himself to her level. And as I am a ….sort of fashion fan – take a look at their clothing : he was always perfectly dressed, expensive suits and rather austere, conservative and her tank tops seemed taken from Goodwill. Ok…so the age difference was a factor but why did she had to be dressed like a teen all the time? She had immaturity written all over her. Compare that with Abby’s appearance in S13. I couldn’t just point out why she was so mad all the time. But I don’t think she took Luka serious. Not even once. This was her way of making herself heard; the tone she used with Alex lots of times. And that boy (Alex I) was more than brash and even called her names. This was some kind of routine for them and since, again, she thought of Luka as another son, she gave them both equal treatments. Another issue is, I think, the trust factor. She’s afraid her life as she knows it – good or bad, it’s what she’s accustomed with –will take another turn and since she doesn’t want any changes, she responds to everything in the only way she knows – with anger. And her getting mad at him because of work situations (like doing compressions on a brain dead (?) patient just because Luka wants to teach Neela a new trick – I don’t have this memorized, I just saw the episode ) – I think it’s what she would feel with any other doctor as well, but the fact that they have a personal relationship makes her think it’s ok to express those frustrations. In the end, she actually is the one who responds his (and everyone’s) question : she’s mad because she used to have control over hew own life and now he’s trying to take some of the burdens away, only that she feels he’s intruding. I didn’t care and still don’t for Wendell so I really can’t comment on that. Jake…I love Jake for what he represented, which was stated above. One little off-topic comment: what’s the deal with Carter and his “afternoon delight” scenes? And since beauty is in the eye of the beholder (or beer-holder as one of my friends puts it ) I could understand that some people find him hot and all (I agree that he’s cute but has lacks in the manly department) but all of his love interests seem so…bored. Kem seemed even more not-so-delighted in their hotel room scene than Abby back in S9. At least she didn’t start singing! I hope this makes sense…still trying to fight of some of the consequences of last night. *crawling back to bed*
