Thanks guys!! Chapter 26 They sat this way for an hour, each catching the others up on his or her life. For her part, Abby left out strategic parts of her story from the last few weeks, and when Joann or Lexie stepped too far over the line, Luka would quickly jump in, changing the subject. After a relaxed dinner that night, Joann explained that Abby would share Lexie's room and Luka could have the guest room. "Watch out for her snoring, Lex," Luka couldn't help but offer as they made their way to their respective rooms. "She puts truck drivers to shame!" Luka laughed as he ducked a pillow that was heading in the direction of his head, held by an incredulous-looking Abby. "Do not!" She defended as she drew the pillow back, preparing for another assault on Luka. This time, Luka grabbed the pillow and yanked it easily from her hands, attacking her with it in return. Abby quickly retreated to Lexie's room, but wasn't quick enough in her attempt to close the door. Soon, she was laying back on Lexie's bed in fits of hysterical laughter, as Luka, kneeling on the bed and towering over her body, continued his pillowed attack. Standing in the doorway, Lexie crossed her arms over her chest as she watched the interaction with a smile on her face. Seeing her mother a little ways down the hall. She silently gestured for her to join the viewing, motioning to the couple that had now moved past pillows and were simply using their arms and legs as weapons. Joann couldn't help but smile as she watched the two, a feeling of contentment washing over her as she saw the mutual adoration on their faces. Sighing, she retreated to her bedroom. "If only they could see what we see," she muttered under her breath with a shake of her head.

Thanks guys!! Here's the next chapter! Chapter 27 Thanksgiving morning dawned with the smell of sweet baked goodness filling the room that Luka was sleeping in. Grinning at the promise of a day filled with football and eating, Luka rolled over and allowed his body to drift back into a pleasant sleep. Pulling her hoodie over her thin pyjama top, Abby slowly made her way to the kitchen to find Joann humming as she stirred the contents of a large bowl. "Good morning," Abby grinned at the older woman as she wrapped her arms around herself and slowly entered the kitchen. "Abby, good morning, my dear! Did you sleep well? Oh, I didn't wake you, did I?" Joann spoke at such a quick pace, that Abby had a hard time understanding her in her early morning state of wakefulness. "No, no," Abby yawned as she pulled out a chair and took a seat at the kitchen table. "I'm an early riser. You know, being a nurse and all." "Can I get you some coffee, sweetie?" Joann didn't wait for an answer as she scurried to the cabinet and pulled down a mug, filling it to the brim with the hot, black liquid. "Thanks." Abby lifted the cup, enjoying the aroma before taking a long, slow sip. There was a comfortable silence for a few minutes before Joann suddenly took a seat next to Abby at the table, her own cup of coffee in her hands. "Abby, dear," Joann's voice seemed uncertain. "I want to tell you that I am so proud of you." Abby's eyebrows wrinkled in confusion. "Proud of me for what?" "It takes a lot of courage to leave an abusive situation like you did with Richard." Abby's eyes fell downward toward her hands, which were wrapping and re-wrapping nervously around her coffee cup. "Oh, so Luka told you-" "Luka didn't have to tell me," Joann interrupted. "I could see it in your eyes. I've been where you have been, my dear, and there's no mistaking the pained look that crossed your face every time someone mentions Richard." Abby sighed. "I didn't realize I was that transparent," she smiled weakly at Joann. Smiling warmly at the younger girl, Joann grasped Abby's hand. "Abby, listen to me. You need to know that you did the right thing. Men like that, they will do everything in their power to make you feel small, but you can't let them." Abby was startled by the passion she saw blazing in Joann's eyes. "If you let them, they'll steal your soul away from you. You are far too bright and kind and loving of a woman to let that happen. Don't! Never settle until you find a man that respects you for you and who gives life to your dreams, instead of crushing them." The sincerity she saw on the older woman's face brought tears to her eyes, and before she even realized what had happened, she was resting her head on Joann's shoulder, as the woman gently rocker her and soothed her, much the way, Abby suspected, a loving mother would have done. Wiping her eyes as she finally released her hold on Joann, Abby grinned. "Thank you, Joann. I-I don't really have a real mother, and to hear you say those things- well, just thank you." Joann smiled warmly as she rose and resumed her baking duties. "Never forget what I said either," she gazed at Abby from her spot at the kitchen counter. "You deserve to be truly loved by a man who is insanely in love with you." This caused them both to break into a pleasant laughter. "Where do you go about finding a man like that?" Abby giggled as she moved to stand by Joann, eager to help her in the food preparations. "Good morning," a throaty male voice suddenly greeted them, and they both lifted their eyes to see a shirtless Luka wearily rubbing his eyes as he entered the kitchen. Joann turned to Abby and gave her a knowing wink, causing them both to absolve into laughter once again. "What?" Luka asked as his face twisted in confusion, only causing them to further irrupt into fits of giggles.

Thanks guys!! Chapter 28 Abby never remembered a more pleasant Thanksgiving than the one she spent with the Kovacs. While the ladies finished the Thanksgiving meal, Luka ran around fixing things off a list his mother had made in anticipation of his homecoming. When they all finally sat down to eat their meal, Abby felt a warm sensation flowing though her veins as she glanced around the table. Growing up with a mother who cared very little for the little girl who had ruined her chance of getting anywhere, Abby remembered spending several Thanksgivings in the booth of a nearly empty diner where her mother was working a holiday shift. Now, looking around the table, Abby's heart felt full with the feeling of family that surrounded her. Glancing at the man who sat on her right, Abby couldn't help but smile as Joann's earlier words played in her head. Catching her gaze on him, Luka smiled at her. "I knew you couldn't keep your eyes off me, Abigail," he smirked. "Shut up," Abby retorted with a role of her eyes, praying that the redness she felt rushing to her cheeks wasn't evident. After dinner, Luka made himself comfortable in front of the TV and settled in for a marathon of football. As the night wore on, the girls became bored with pretending to care about the game, and Lexie decided it would be a great idea for them to go to the local bar and have some drinks. Luka didn't like the idea of Abby and Lexie going off to a bar without him, but he also didn't want to leave the game, and after making them promise him that they'd keep an eye out for one another, he reluctantly let them go. Joann stayed behind, claiming to be exhausted from her early morning cooking, and called it a night by 9:30, just a few minutes after the girls had left. It was nearly 11:00 when Luka felt his cell phone begin to vibrate against his leg. "Hello," he grunted, not taking his eyes off the game. "Luka, it's Lexie. I think you should come down here right away." Lexie's voice was rushed and nervous, causing Luka to immediately turn off the game and jump up in search of his shoes. "What's wrong?" He demanded, grabbing his jacket and sitting down once again to slip into his shoes. "It's Abby, she, she's-" "What's wrong with Abby?" Luka barked, feeling his heart constricting as he fought back the panic that was threatening to creep in. "She's wasted, Luka. I mean, knock down good and drunk. I didn't realize she had taken so many shots. She must not drink that often because as soon as she started taking them, it was like she kept losing more and more of her inhibitions. At this point, I'm a little worried about her. There's only so many times I can try to keep the sleazy men away. I need your help, Luka." Luka cursed under his breath as he grabbed his keys off the kitchen counter and bolted out the door. Images of men trying to take advantage of Abby wouldn't stop assaulting his mind, and he was beginning to feel nauseous as he slammed his truck door closed and peeled out of the driveway.

Thanks guys, here's the next chapter!! Chapter 29 It was miraculous that Luka made it to the bar as fast as he did without crashing or getting pulled over. Throwing open the door to the small establishment labeled simply as "Mikey's," Luka's eyes quickly searched the crowd for Abby and Lexie. It didn't take long for him to find them, as he realized that they, or more specifically just Abby, were at the center of a large crowd of cheering men. Shoving his way to the front of the gathered group, his eyes went wide. "Holy shit," he muttered. Standing on top of a shaky chair, Abby was swinging back and forth to the rhythm of a song that was pouring out of bar's jukebox. Holding a bottle of beer like a microphone, she swung her other arm above her head as she sang along to the song, suggestively moving her hips in tempo. This was certainly pleasing the clientele of "Mikey's," who were egging her on with wolf whistles and, from what Luka could angrily assess, happily undressing the pretty blond with their eyes. "Alright, that's it!" Luka shouted, pushing away the hungry-looking men who stood closest to Abby. "Party's over. Everybody move on." This was met with a loud chorus of groans, several obscenities, and one man even being so daring as to yell at Luka, "Aw, come on, let her finish!" Luka narrowed his eyes at the round-faced man, bringing his face close to his. "I suggest you get the hell out of my way before I rip off each and every one of your fingers and then I really get started on kicking your ass." This was enough for the man, who quickly backed up, grabbing two of his friends with him and sheepishly heading for the bar. Abby was completely unaware that her audience had dispersed, and kept on in her performance. If Luka hadn't been more angry at that moment, he may have found the situation humorous, but right now, remembering the lustful looks in the men's eyes, he was not laughing. "Luka, thank God you're here!" Lexie gushed as she moved to stand next to her brother. This got Abby's attention. "Luka? Luka!" Suddenly she threw her body off the chair and into Luka's arms, sending him backward a few feet before he was able to regain his footing. "It's time to go home now, Abby," Luka spoke slowly as he tightened his grip on the giggling woman in his arms, carrying her toward the door with a few last parting glares at the men who were staring regretfully at her. "Okay, Luka," she stated in a childlike voice, snuggling her body closer to him and laying her face dangerously close to his neck. Focus Luka, he thought to himself as he felt his body began to warm at the proximity of her lips to his neck and the feel of her breasts pressing tightly against his chest. Handing Lexie his keys so she could open the door of his truck, he slid Abby in as far as he could, sighing as she slumped over in the seat as soon as he set her down. "Are you okay to drive your car home, Lex?" Luka asked his sister as he moved toward the driver's side of the truck. "Yeah," Lexie nodded, "I didn't have time to drink. I was too busy making sure Abby was okay." "Thanks for doing that, Lex. What the hell happened anyway? Why did she get so drunk?" "Everything was okay at first, but then some entertainment news program came on the TV in the bar, talking about how Richard was spotted with some famous actress last night, and that just set her off. She started doing shots and kept muttering things about Richard being a bastard and how she was never going to find love. It was crazy!" Lexie shook her head at the memory. Luka sighed. "Let's just get her home and try not to wake mom, okay?" With that, Luka slid into his seat, having to gently push Abby so he had room to sit down.
