When it rains, it pours in Chicago. Luka sighed as his breath condensed on the glass.
Abby had rushed out over two hours ago, without a coat. He hoped she had gone to Susan’s because she didn’t have the keys to her apartment. But he knew there was point trying to get in touch; she needed her time to cool down.
The rain sheeted down and he sighed again, dragging himself away from the window. No good staring, he needed to do something.
~~~~~~
Her hair clung to her face as she twisted the cup in her hands. The baby rolled around and she instinctively laid a hand on her bump.
“We’ll go home soon baby.” She whispered. “I just need a good think.”
He was doing everything right, and that annoyed her. He was making sure she ate enough, and slept enough, and drank only organic juice, and…smothered her with love. Every once in a while, she needed to sit down with a fat steak, a glass of coke and watch movies til 2am. She needed the freedom she had always been given.
“Want a refill?” the waitress asked.
“Yes please.” Her mug was filled and she took a small sip, still caressing the little life inside her.
“Abby?” She looked up at the sound of Neela’s voice. “How come you’re here…soaking wet…drinking…”
“Cocoa! It’s not coffee. Hate the smell at the moment.” Her friend slid into the booth opposite her and took her hand tenderly. “What happened?”
Abby shrugged,
“He…I…this whole…oh god Neela, I don’t know. He was talking about baptism again, and he was saying how he was going to stay home for a bit after it’s born, and I just flipped. I think I feel too restrained. I’m so used to doing everything tricky alone, that having him there makes me nervous.”
“Like having someone else makes it more real?”
“Yeah, and I have to do it right or he’ll think I’m dumb.”
“Abby, you are so totally insane.” Neela said kindly.
“I know.”
“He phoned the hospital you know. Just to check you weren’t there. Sounded worried.”
“I should go back.”
“Maybe.” She took a last swig and set the mug down. “Thanks Neela, for listening. See you tomorrow.” Neela stood and embraced her quickly.
“See ya.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Luka jerked awake at the sound of movement. The blanket fell off him and he stood up. Suddenly he heard an explosion of sound and realised it was the kids upstairs getting home.
“Abby, where are you?” He murmured, moving through the large apartment aimlessly. The rain still bounced off the sill rhythmically and he yawned.
As he slid into the armchair haphazardly, he heard a gentle rapping.
“Please God…” he whispered, sliding the catch off and pulling open the door.
“I’m sorry.” She whispered, her hair dripping onto his clean t-shirt. “I wanted a walk.”
“In the rain.” He asked, chuckling softly. She lay her ear on his chest and looped her little arms around him. The baby kicked against him and he smiled, pulling her inside.
“Come on, do you want a bath?”
“Only if you’ll be there too.” She said mischievously.
“As you wish.”
Later as they lay belly to belly in the expansive double bed, he kissed her forehead and spoke into the night air.
“I have to ask Abby, where did you go?”
“Ike’s. For cocoa.” She kissed him softly. “Luka, I’m not used to having someone to rely on. This is new for me. Sometimes, I feel trapped.”
“I’m sorry, I should have known you don’t need someone to watch over your every move.”
“Yeah, but some times it’s nice to know someone is worried where you are.”
“And sometimes it’s nice to have someone to worry about.”
