Missing
Chapter 1/5
by JD
(This fic was written for the community 10 ER Fics on Live Journal, and is set just prior to "Murmurs of the Heart.")
It hadn't helped telling Abby about Ames, if anything it seemed to only have made matters worse, and Luka found himself dreading leaving for work the following morning. He and Abby had sat up until early morning discussing what they could do to best handle Ames, if in fact he was stalking the family which Abby still fully doubted. There was no question now that they should stagger their shifts, neither of them would be able to concentrate on their patients if they knew the other weren't with Joe. So, it was he who had gone to work and Abby who was the one to stay home, spending the first day with Joe.
"Abby?" Even as he opened the door Luka felt the chill creep up his spine, something was wrong, instinctively he knew it the moment he stepped inside and the panic was immediate.
"Abby! Joe!" He dropped his briefcase and ran for the stairs, taking them two at a time only to find that room empty as well. They had to be here. Backtracking downstairs he stopped when he saw one of Joe's blankets laying balled up on the floor, as he picked it up he couldn't miss the blood that stained it and he felt his heart stop. Oh God, no.
"Abby! Joe!" He clutched the thin blanket in his hands as he ran for the door and back outside, stopping when he reached the sidewalk, his eyes scanning up one side and then down the other. This couldn't be happening, it was a nightmare, it had to be, oh god, please, let him wake up from it.

Missing[/b Chapter 2/5
by JD
There had to be a reasonable explanation for where Abby and Joe were. Even as he stood there on the sidewalk clutching the blood stained blanket his mind was scrambling for some reason other than the one he'd first lept at. He'd call her, that would solve everything, she'd probably just taken him to the park. He could believe that, even if it didn't explain the blanket. Pulling out his cell phone he pushed the quick dial for Abby's phone. Breathe Luka, breathe. He voiced the reminder silently to himself as he listened to the ring, only to frown as he realized that he wasn't just hearing it through the phone he held to his ear.
"Oh God, no." It was all he could do to re-enter the apartment and realize that the dual ring was indeed coming from inside. Abby hadn't taken her phone, where would she have gone without it?
"Abby." He closed his own phone and re-pocketed it as he saw hers on the counter. She wouldn't have left willingly without it, would she? She'd have known he'd try to reach her. Already he could feel his heart starting to race, the worst case scenario already beginning to take root.
"No!" he wasn't going to give in to it...not yet, he couldn't give up on them. Think, think, his thoughts were becoming a tangled mess and the only thing he was sure of was that Abby and Joe were missing. What would she have done? She knew he was due home...think.
Her phone, that might be it, maybe the clue was in her phone, maybe she'd left it for a reason. He immediately reached for Abby's phone and punched redial, only to hear the answering ring of his own phone in response.
"Damn." He threw it across the room without thinking about the consequences.
"Abby, where are you?"

Missing
Chapter 3/5
by JD
He was running out of places to try, no, that wasn't true, but if he called the last it was admitting that the worst could be true. Snapping his cell phone closed, Luka reached for the bloodied baby blanket, only to crush it tightly in his hands once he had it. He wouldn't be asked to make that sacrifice a second time, would he?
The memories of what it had been like to lose Danijela and the children came instantly and almost simultaneously he found comparisons between those feelings and what he was feeling now. What had he done to deserve this? He buried his face in the blanket, only to find the scent of his missing son too much to bear. He had to call the police, but what did he tell them? They could be anywhere, all he had was the baby blanket with blood that could have come from anywhere, and his suspicion that Ames might somehow be involved, he had no proof.
He was on his feet before the thought had fully formed, his pacing taking him from one room to the next as if he might see something he had missed in those few moments since he'd last been there. But it was always the same, and in his mind, gaining strength were those memories of how he had felt when he had lost Danijela and the children. He couldn't go through that again...he was sure of it.
He had to call the police, he couldn't just wait and hope that everything would work out for the best. As difficult as it was to admit that Ames might use them to get to him, it was even more difficult to do nothing and have it turn out to be true. Short of starting a block by block canvas of the neighborhood on his own what else could he do? The decision made, he reached for the phone.

Chapter 4/5
by JD
It was no use, no matter who he had called the answer had been the same, no one had heard from Abby, no one had any idea where she and Joe might be. His worst fears were being confirmed. It was happening again. Even as the realization crystallized he could feel the tightening in his chest, feel the undeniable shortness of breath. If he wasn't a doctor and knew better Luka would almost swear he was having a heart attack. The rational part of his mind was telling him to call the police, to tell them about Ames, about the stalking, the threats, his fears, but, the irrational part of his mind was winning at the moment.
He snapped the cover of the phone closed and stalked to the door, the blood-stained baby blanket still clutched in his hand. As he reached Louise's door he pounded on it with enough forced that it reverberated around him.
"Luka, what is it?" The woman opened the door almost immediately, her face turning instantly to one of concern as she correctly read his expression.
"Louise, do you have Joe? Did Abby ask you to watch him?" His heart seized in those moments that it took for him to get the questions out and wait for her to answer.
"No, I'm sorry, I haven't seen Abby or Joe today, why, is something wrong?" Her eyes swept over him, then fixed on the blanket he held. "Luka, what is it...come inside." She reached for his arm only to have him jerk away.
"No, don't...I have to find them." He was already moving away as he refused. "I have to find them." He turned his back on the woman, his last hope for finding one or both of them safe now gone. It was happening again.

Chapter 5/5
by JD
There was no escaping it now, it was inevitable, the thing he had most feared most was coming true. As he walked away from Louise's apartment door the full weight of the realization crashed down upon him. It was his own fault, all of his mistakes, his excesses had to have led to this. As he reached their apartment door he stopped, knowing even as he looked inside that he couldn't enter, there was too much of them inside, too many things of Abby's of Joe's. Without thought he let the blanket slip from his fingers and pool in the doorway, he couldn't stay here.
Luka turned away from the apartment in a daze, unable to even muster anger at Ames for what he was sure the man had done. He couldn't start over again, if they were gone, if somehow the man how thought to punish him by stripping his family from him the way he believed his own had been taken. He found himself on the sidewalk without even realizing how he had gotten there.
Where would he go? What would he do? What would it matter? His life was over, without Abby, without Joe...it had taken everything he had in him to start over after he'd lost Danijela, Jasna and Marko, there wasn't anything left to do it again. He was drained, empty, unable to even find tears to grieve for the loss of them now.
"Luka!" The sound of Abby's voice crept into the blackness and without daring to hope he found himself looking for the source.
"Luka, what are you doing?" Abby came down the sidewalk toward him, balancing Joe on one hip as she waved with her free hand.
"Abby." Her name was little more than a whisper on his lips, as fear kept him rooted to the spot where he stood. What if she wasn't really there? What if he was only imagining them?
"Luka, come take Joe." As Abby called to him again the spell seemed to break and swallowing his fear he forced his feet to move.
"Abby?" The fear lingered in his voice and as he reached them he couldn't help but wrap his arms around them, pulling the two of them close, thus assuring himself that they were real.
"I was afraid Ames had you, the blood..." Abby silenced him with a kiss.
"Luka, Shhh, I'm sorry, I should have called you, I cut myself, the closest thing was Joe's blanket, I didn't think, Luka, I'm so sorry." It was Abby's turn to hold him as relief washed over him, they were home, they were safe, and nothing else mattered.
