Discussion thread for tonight's new episode! Found this little blurb: In the second-to-last episode of a splendid season, "Rescue Me" displays its immense range.
It's silly at first, with Franco's big boxing match (against a woman) bringing chaos. Then, right after the opening credits, it turns dead serious.
The two great scenes are still to come, though. One involves Lou and his bride; the other has Tommy (Denis Leary) and Kelly (superbly played by Maura Tierney). There's more, leading to a final jolt. It's a superb hour.news.cincinnati.com/article/20090825/ENT/908250340/1175/TV+s+best+betsAnd the TV Guide guy on Twitter said Maura is "amazing" in this episode. Sounds like a good one!

I don't want to get my hopes up but... *keeps fingers crossed* True. I´m wondering if the writers are going Hitchcock´s route and the box is nothing more than a Macguffin ("a plot device around which a whole story seems to revolve, but ultimately has nothing to do with the true meaning or ending of the story"... ). Since no one there is Hitch, I really hope there´s something significant in that box. Good point: Maura - she never disappointed me.

Tonight we got a fun opening scene with Kelly showing up as Damien's date to Franco's fight (and confessing to some lesbian experimentation, which I knew Allie would get a laugh out of whenever she sees it LOL) and then we got the box scene. Turns out Kelly had a baby girl who died of a heart defect at four months old - her picture was in the box.
I don't even know what to say other than Maura was brilliant. And I have to admit, I kind of love her with Leary. I thought he was wonderful in their second scene tonight, he really played beautifully off of Maura and let her shine. When she held his hand at the end? That was a great moment. She was just phenomenal.

Oh. MY. Gosh. This episode is exactly the kind of reason I have stuck through this entire season. There is usually a lot of offensive crapola....and the boxing match did not disappoint (nor the continuing discussion about the color of Sean's nether regions....eew.) but it was offset by a hilarious and revealing conversation between Kelly and Tommy that made it cute. While I thought the picture in the box thing was predictable and a bit mawkish....Maura and Denis were both truely outstanding and pulled it off. If this episode rates nothing else, it should get a nomination for writing. Maura was freaking gorgeous.....and very, very moving. After tonight, sadly, I really think next week's finale is going to be a let down,

The scene with Maura and Leary in the apartment was beautifully done. I noted Peter Tolan co-wrote and directed this episode, and he brought out the best in Maura. She was incredible. And Leary played off of her very well. I agree with Larue, I think next week will be a let down as far as Maura's character is concerned. I love this character and how she plays it. Looking forward to Parenthood but wish we could also have another season of Kelly. I can't see how that would happen with Parenthood being pushed to midseason.
I don't think Maura has ever been more beautiful, sexy, and vulnerable than she portrayed last night. I just cannot understand why she doesn't get more credit for her acting AND beauty.

And you gotta love the way she hitches up her jeans while chasing after Leary and the box. Cute!

I don't think Maura has ever been more beautiful, sexy, and vulnerable than she portrayed last night. I just cannot understand why she doesn't get more credit for her acting AND beauty. I couldn't possibly agree more. I'm all out of adjectives to describe how amazing, talented and lovely I think she is. For me, there isn't another actress on the planet who is within a million miles of her as far as talent and beauty go. She's an absolute treasure. I know I'm going to be watching that last scene a hundred times in the next few days. I can't believe the one person I wanted her to have the least amount of scenes with when we first heard about this job ended up being the person I enjoyed her with most, but she and Leary have a really wonderful chemistry. Tommy's like a crazed cartoon when he's around Janet and Sheila. With Kelly, he's much more like a real man and far more appealing. And not for nothing, but how incredible was her body? She sure as hell doesn't look 44, LOL. Thanks for the clips, Martine!!

I just watched the episode. I agree with you all, Maura was great and that scene was really moving.
Now, this might seem stupid, but I just don't get how she fits in in the story. I mean, I like the character, but is she just a "passing by" character or something?
Yeah, I'm not really getting the big picture or whatever its called.

I don't really think there is a "big picture" where Kelly is concerned. I think she's just the anti-Janet/Sheila in Tommy's life, someone he can be around who takes his mind off the "Do I choose Janet or Sheila?" situation and who doesn't make him completely insane the way those two do. Like Leary said, she's the female Tommy. There's a lot of bravado, a lot of wise-cracking, a lot of lust, but a lot of pain at the core of who they are. I have to agree with littlewonder - I'm excited about Parenthood, but I'm going to be really sad to lose Kelly. I kind of wish they could find a way to bring her back next season. And Larue - she did the hitching up the pants thing on the way to open the door, too. Adorable.

Yes, I understood that. But if next week is her last episode, then I don't understand how her could really made an impact in Tommy or whatever she was supposed to do.
I'm sorry, this is just my opinion.
