I finally have an update! I am so slow, sorry, I got a bit stuck on where to take this but I think I know where it is going now...I have skipped it along a few months to Abbys graduation to progress the story faster I don't like taking things slowly LOL I hope you all don't mind
CHAPTER ELEVEN
“You know what!? Do what ever you like, go…I don’t really care anymore, I managed last time I can certainly manage again” Abby spat the last line out at Luka as they hurriedly burst through the ambulance bay doors to the ER. “Abby, wait!” He called after her but she had already set about her days tasks and he didn’t really want to drag this through the ER gossip mill by making a scene at the admit desk. Heaving a sigh he made his way toward the lounge.
“What was all that about?” a heavily pregnant Susan asked her friend. Abby barely looked up, “He wants to go back to Africa…can you believe that? After everything that happened last time he still wants to go back, I just don’t get it, and to top it all off he wants me to go with him! What the hell is he thinking, I graduate today, I still have my residency to do and I have no license to practice until I get my boards back.” She finished with a flourish. Susan smiled and knowingly offered, “Men, can’t live with them…” “Can’t kill them” Abby finished for her making Susan chuckle.
“I thought you were on maternity leave, what are you doing here anyway?” Abby asked finally looking up from her paperwork. “I just had a few things I needed to sort out. You know maybe going to Africa together won’t be so bad, you two seem to be getting along great these past few months, you never know you might like it, you could nurse until you come back to start your residency” Susan tried to placate her friend. “Yeah well that is easier said than done, I don’t want to go to Africa, besides I can’t because…well it doesn’t matter why I can’t but I can’t, end of story, I am just angry he wants to go at all.” “Yeah well I can understand that. Did you hear about Carter and Kem?” She asked changing the subject, Abby looked at her curiously shaking her head a touch of sadness washing over her when Susan told her that they had lost the baby that night, “I wanted to go and see them but I figure I would be the last person they would want to see, being pregnant and all.” “Yeah” Abby mumbled out. “Anyway I have to go, Chuck gets anxious if I am missing for more than an hour, if you see Carter send him my regards would you? I’ll see you at the graduation” Susan finished as she walked away from Abby.
Luka and Abby both managed to avoid each other for the duration of the day, he didn’t want to fight publicly and she was too angry to even look at him. She stepped into the elevator on her way up to OB to see Carter and as the doors were closing a hand reached out to stop them putting her face to face with Luka, she scarcely looked at him as he stepped in next to her. “You going up to see Carter?” he asked her, “Yep” was her clipped response she wasn’t in the mood for small talk so they rode the rest of the way in silence.
They exited the elevator and made their way over to Carter and his father who were sitting on one of the couches provided in the foyer. The pair sat opposite them and tried to make small talk consoling their friend, not really knowing what to say to him. After a few minutes Carter spoke up, “Listen thanks for coming, but you should go, you might miss your graduation” He finished looking directly at Abby. She entwined her hands together and told him “I was going to miss it anyway” concluding with a shrug. “Kem and I are fine, honestly, you should go” Carter again insisted. Abby looked over at Luka briefly and silently they mutually decided to leave, standing up she looked down at her friend, “If you…” Abby began not really knowing how to end the sentence but Carter seemed to understand what she meant as he nodded his head at her looking shattered, she leant down and quickly kissed him on the top of his head affectionately, Luka felt a moment of jealousy swell within him at the display of emotion between the two but it quickly subsided he knew there was nothing going on with them it was just his macho pride making him envious, once Abby had moved to the side he shook Carters hand and followed her to the stairs.
Luka reached out touching her shoulder and pulled her to face him staring into her eyes he started “Abby, look if you don’t want me to go…” she cut him off curtly, “I know you said that already this morning, and really I don’t know why you are putting this all onto me, do what you like Luka, you’re a free man it isn’t like we are married, hell we don’t even live together, if this is something you feel you have to do then do it, don’t let me stop you.” “Come with me” he pleaded with her again. Abby vehemently shook her head, “No, don’t worry about me Luka; we will be just fine by ourselves. Nothing lasts forever right?” remembering that Luka had once said he wanted their relationship to last. ” It took all of her willpower to walk away at that instant, if she had stayed any longer she would have broken down, Luka stood there staring after her confused by the last words she had uttered.
