CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Luka hardly heard the tapping at his door, and had been surprised to see Abby standing there when he finally opened it, “We have to talk” he heard her say as she pushed past him making her way into his living room. Luka closed the door and followed Abby remaining silent, he wanted her to talk first, she had obviously come here to say something to him and he wanted to hear what it was before he said anything. He looked expectantly at her, she had a worried look on her face, her beautiful features were distorted as if in pain and she was moving from one foot to another, he could feel her apprehension. Finally she spoke...
“I’m pregnant” Those two little words floored Luka he hadn’t been expecting that at all, he thought she was going to have another go at him about Africa, gaping at her and running his hands through is thick hair all he could manage to say was “You’re what?” again she repeated that she was pregnant this time choosing to sit down on his sofa, looking at her hands not able to bring her eyes to meet his. “What, how…when did this happen?” Luka was scrambling for words as he sat down beside her.
“I found out about a week ago, I was waiting for the right time to tell you when you told me your travel plans” She said the last part sarcastically. ‘Geez no wonder she reacted the way she did when I brought up Africa to her earlier – good one Luka’ he silently chastised himself.
“Well that makes what you said at the hospital make more sense” Abby looked at him blankly before he clarified, “Ah, you said ‘we will be fine by ourselves’ or something like that, I wondered what you meant – now I guess I know” Luka sighed wondering what Abby was thinking about all of this, hoping the fact that she had already subconsciously referred to the baby earlier to mean that she was happy about this.
“Oh, I …ah, I never realized I did that” Abby shook her head confused that she would have let something like that slip out of her mouth with out intending to.
“Look Luka I don’t expect you to change your life; your plans because of this, I mean I don’t even know what I want to do yet. I just thought you had a right to know, Maggie made me see sense”
“Maggie” Luka chuckled, “since when do you listen to anything Maggie has to say?” Abby smiled for the first time since arriving at his door moments ago, “Yeah I could hardly believe it myself” She stood, picking her bag up from the floor, Luka eyed her suspiciously, “You’re thinking about an abortion aren’t you?” When Abby failed to respond to his question he took hold of her hand standing in front of her, “Abby I know this has to be your choice and I will respect what ever you choose to do, but I need you to know that I want you to keep it, I want us to have this baby and be a family, I’m not going anywhere. If I had of known I would never even considered going to Africa – I promise you that,” She looked away from him as he said those words to her not wanting to meet his eye and give herself away as much as she loved him she still found it hard to be completely honest and open with him, she pulled her hand from his and walked towards the door. “I need to be alone, I’ll see you at work” And with those words of finality she was gone.
Luka heaved a sigh going over the entire conversation in his mind, he wanted so much to run after her, but he knew well enough to leave her be at a time like this, she was processing a lot and he knew when she was ready to talk she would come to him.
