I've never written a fanfic before in my life, but I figured I'd give it a try! So please let me know what you think.
Sorry for all mistakes, but I'm swedish so..
The title is from Coldplay's song with the same name.
anyway, here goes;
Save tonight
He closed the door behind him as quietly as possible before kicking of his shoes and making his way into the apartment. He knew she needed all the sleep she could get right now, especially after everything that had happened.
He tiptoed past their bedroom on his way to their son’s room, although he wasn’t sure he would find the baby in there. They had both agreed that it was best for Joe to get used to sleep by himself, in his crib, but somehow he always seemed to end up in their bed. Truth was, neither of them could really relax until he was in arms reach.
He found her in the rocking chair, the baby in her arms. Joe was sleeping peacefully, carefully wrapped in a blanket, but she was wide awake, watching their son with a smile on her lips. He couldn’t help but smile himself, feeling the nowadays familiar happiness even more clearly. This was life.
- Hey,
She looked up at his whisper, smiling even wider at him then she had at their sleeping son.
- Hey! I didn’t here you come in.
- I tried to be as quiet as possible, figured you probably were sleeping.
He made his way over to them, letting his hand find and caress her neck when he reached them.
- You know what they say; when he’s sleeping, you should be sleeping.
His mocking tone kept the smile on her face, but she didn’t take her eyes of the baby. She gently caressed one of Joe’s tiny hands and sighed.
- I know. I just couldn’t bear to put him down. I mean, look at him! He’s just…perfect.
She leaned into his touch. He crouched before her, his hand never leaving her hair. He reached out his free hand and softly stroked the baby’s cheek with his knuckles.
- He is, isn’t he? Ten little fingers, ten little toes and the cutest little button nose ever. I could watch him all day.
He let a finger run over Joe’s nose, feeling the soft baby skin.
- Me too. Can you believe we made him?
He let out a soft laugh.
- Not really. It’s pretty unbelievable. I mean, we have a baby!
Abby shifted her eyes from their son and flashed him a knowing grin.
- I know, it’s so crazy!
They both chuckled, and he could see the sparkles in her eyes. It really was crazy, considering everything that had happened in the past nine months. Nine months ago they hadn’t even been together, and now here they where; living together and with a son…
- Was the party nice?
- Huh? Oh, the party. Yeah, it was nice! I showed pictures of Joe to… well, pretty much to anyone who seemed interested. They all thought he was beautiful.
She smiled proudly.
- And they thought you were kind of cute too; with your hair all messy, wearing my robe.
- You showed them that!? You showed them the pictures that you insisted on taking at two in the morning the other day?
She looked at him with wide eyes, and he couldn’t help but laugh at her expression.
- I’m just messing with you! I only showed them to Neela, and it’s not like she hasn’t seen you in a robe before.
She narrowed her eyes and looked at him suspiciously, but he could see that she was trying to keep herself from smiling.
- I promise!
- Good, because I wouldn’t want Morris to have something to mock me fore even before I return to work.
- I didn’t show him. Besides, I think you look really pretty in my robe!
She smiled her half smile at him, and he couldn’t keep himself from stealing a quick kiss from her lips. After that he stood up and offered his hand to her.
- Come on, let’s get you both to bed!
He pulled her to a standing position and she moved to lay Joe in the crib, but he stopped her. She looked at him, puzzled.
- Let’s take him with us.
She didn’t move.
- Luka…
- I know, I know, he needs to learn to sleep in his own crib. But he can learn eventually, and one night won’t hurt.
She seemed to contemplate the idea for a while, but then smiled at him and he knew that she had given in.
She led the way to their bedroom and waited with Joe in her arms while he organized the sheets before crawling onto the bed and gently laying the sleeping baby down.
He went to the bathroom to change. When he came back, she was lying on “his” side of the bed, with her back to him and a protective hand on Joe’s belly, already fast asleep.
He slipped in quietly behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist, gently kissing her neck. He took a last glance at their sleeping baby, making sure he was comfortable, before lying down and letting sleep overcome him.
