Luka’s Place:
Abby was leant back against the wall of the shower. The hot water flowed on her. Her wet hair stuck against her skin. She crossed her finger in her hair. She turned the button and went out of the shower, grabbing a towel.
Luka was in the kitchen, preparing the dinner. Abby went out of the bathroom, a couple of minute later, wearing pyjamas’ pants and a blue top. She went down the stairs. Luka was putting the plats on the table.
“Is it ready?”
“Yes.”
Abby nodded and sat. Luka poured red wine in Abby’s glass and in his. Luka began to eat. Few minutes later, he noticed Abby hadn’t eaten anything, yet.
“What’s wrong? Is it bad? Usually you like it…”
“No. I know it’s delicious but… I’m not hungry…” Abby was playing with her fork. Luka felt she needed something, he nodded and said.
“Come here.” Abby stood up and went to sit on Luka’s laps.
“Are you okay?” He said, resting his chin on her shoulder.
“I’m fine… I’m just not hungry.”
Luka plunged his gaze in hers. He knew it was useless. If something was wrong she would tell him. Abby was playing with the buttons of Luka’s sleeve. Luka kissed Abby’s neck, smelling her scent. He loved her so much he didn’t know how to show her… Their gaze met. The remained silent. They didn’t need to talk to each other like one year ago, when she was come at home to talk about the little Sidney… Luka knew something now. It was now… It was the perfect moment to ask her. Luka moved his lips to say something but Abby put her forefinger on his mouth.
“I know what you want to say… and… I do.” A smile appeared on Luka’s mouth.
“You do?”
“Yes, I do marry you.” Luka drew her closer against him. Abby bent over and Luka pressed his mouth against hers.
Abby was on the bench. She looked straight in front of her. The sky was blue without any clouds. The sun shone. She didn’t move even when a man sat next to her, looking straight in front of him. A couple of seconds later, he said.
“I’m really glad…” Abby didn’t move, just her lips to draw a smile.
“Me too, daddy.” They turned their head at the same time, their eyes met.
“But… I have to leave again… the happiness is just some moments in a life, Abby.”
Abby didn’t understand what he was saying. She tried to read in his eyes. He stood up, slowly and put a kiss on her forehead.
“We’ll join again… one day…”
He nodded a sad smile on his face. He turned his heels and went away, slowly. Abby couldn’t move, she didn’t feel her legs anymore. She closed her eyes, hoping when she would open them again, he would be here, next to her. But… he wasn’t here anymore.Abby opened her eyes. She was lying down on her side. Luka’s hand was on her waist. Abby looked at the clock. 4 Am. She moved Luka’s hand and stood up. She had a bad impression, probably because of her nightmare. She got dressed, went down the stairs and took the keys of Luka’s car.
Oak Park:
Abby knocked at the door. All was dark in the street. Then a light appeared through a window of the first flat. Abby waited for some seconds when the door opened.
“Abby?” Jim was here, standing, his hair was messed.
“I felt something was wrong. Will you leave me again? Will you leave us again?”
Jim shook his head, lost. He let Abby enter. He led her to the living-room.
“Abby… I won’t leave.”
“Are you sure? Because I think if you o it again… I wouldn’t be able to bear it. I feel… you hid me something…”
Jim turned his gaze away.
“You’re lying me?”
He didn’t dare to tell. Abby felt a tear flowed on her cheek.
“Tell me. Please… tell me… I love you, daddy… I don’t want you to leave again…”
Jim looked at her surprised. She had just called him daddy… He lowered his head. Why was he so cowardly? He took a deep breathe.
“I’m sick…”
“What?”
“I have a brain tumor.”
Abby felt her heart stop beating for awhile. She felt her legs trembled. She moved to him. He welcomed her in his arms. He shook his head. He didn’t want her to cry. He parted and obliged her to look at him.
“I’m alive and I won’t leave anywhere. You’re doctor. You know what it is.” Abby lowered her head. He obliged her to look at him again, gently.
“Anywhere, I swear you.” Abby wiped her wet cheeks.
“I won’t let you leave, daddy.” Jim took Abby in his arms. Nothing could hurt them now, nothing.
6 months and a half later:
Abby was standing, outside, next to the sliding door. Luka went out, carrying Maddie in the baby sling. Maddie was sleeping, her head against Luka’s chest. Abby smiled.
“Hey.” She buttoned Luka’s coat to protect Maddie. She caressed her cheek and kissed her.
“We’re going. You’ll join us.”
“Yes. I have to finish and buy some things.”
“Okay.” Luka kissed her and went away, walking in the snow. Abby wrapped herself up in her coat. She looked at the sky, doing some steps. 6 months and a half was spent and a lot of thing had changed. Eric and Sandra were married since October. Jim was closer to his children since he had taken a leave to fight the disease and spent his free time to take care of his family. Abby smiled. In one year, a lot of things had changed her life. Suddenly, the sliding door opened. Abby turned.
“Abby, your patient in 4.” Abby nodded to Haleh. She turned her again to look at the sky again. She closed her eyes. Then she opened her eyes when she felt flakes of snow falling on her face. She smiled peaceful and entered in the hospital.
A suburb of Chicago:
Abby parked the car along the street. She stayed sat on her seat, her hands put on the steering wheel. She went out of the vehicle. It was cold in this night. She walked a little in the snow letting her footprints in. She went up the four stairs and arrived in front of a big black door with a suspended Christmas wreath. Abby took a deep breathe. She wrapped herself up in her coat and stretched her hand to the doorbell button. She trembled, and then she pushed the button. She smiled and opened the door. Luka went out of the kitchen at this moment. He looked at her surprised.
“Why had you rung?”
Abby shrugged. She moved to him, plunged her hands in his back pockets. He smiled and bent over to kiss her. He made a sign with his head to show the living-room. Abby entered in the room. Everybody turned to look at her.
“Hey everybody.”
Eric moved to her and kissed her on the cheek. “Merry Christmas, Sis.” Abby kissed him back.
Abby took off her coat and sat on the armrest of the armchair where Jim was sitting. She kissed him on his cheek.
“Your husband-to-be doesn’t want us to help.” Ellen said.
Abby laughed. “You didn’t know yet? He hates when someone is in his kitchen.” Luka hit Abby on the arm gently. Luka laughed and went back in the kitchen. Abby whispered something in Jim’s ear. Jim smiled, amused.
"Me too." abby nodded and looked at Eric who was whispering some things in Sandra’s ear. The first thing of which she was proud, her brother had succeeded to build his own life… She looked at Ellen, Dana and Julianne who was talking and laughing… she had another family. Then she looked at Jim. They smiled to each other. Jim picked up Maddie who was on the floor. He put her on his laps and began to play with her. There were no words to explain how much she loved this… all of this.
Two hours later:
They were all around the coffee table, sat on the floor, on the couch, laughing, talking.
“Maybe we should open the gifts…” Eric said.
“Yes. Be right back.” Abby stood up and went up to take the gifts in her bedroom. But she stopped when she heard Maddie crying. Abby entered in the bedroom and moved to the crib.
“Hey, sweetie. What’s wrong?” Abby took Maddie in her arms and began to lull her. Maddie had her eyes opened. Abby smiled when Maddie grabbed Abby’s little finger and stopped crying. But Abby didn’t notice she had stopped. She continued to lull her. Abby jumped when she heard Luka’s voice.
“Wow.”
“What?”
“She stopped crying… immediately. You are becoming better than me.”
Abby smiled. “Yeah… I had a good teacher.”
Luka leant back against the wall. Abby caressed Maddie’s cheek with her forefinger.
“You’re beautiful.” Luka said. Abby saw Maddie was falling asleep. She deposited her in the crib. Luka moved to Abby and encircled her with his arms.
They remained silent, looking at Maddie. Luka began to tease Abby kissing her in the neck. “I love you…” He whispered.
Abby turned to face him.
“I love you more.”
“Certainly not.”
“I do.”
Abby frowned. “Okay…you love me more.” He bent over her and kissed him. Luka plunged his hand in his pocket and gave a jewel box in black velvet to Abby.
“It’s for you.”
Abby opened it. A diamond ring was inside. Abby looked up at him.
“I haven’t bought one… we are engaged… but you hadn’t a ring…” Abby grabbed him by his neck and kissed him.
“It’s beautiful, thank you.” Abby paused. “Do you want yours?”
Luka nodded.
Abby was on tip-toe, she whispered in his ear. “I’m pregnant.”
Luka looked at her, surprised. “It’s a joke, isn’t it?”
“No, it’s not a joke. But… it’s the last time I tell you I’m pregnant in Christmas’ day.” Luka grabbed her by her waist and kissed her. Abby plunged her eyes in his.
“Merry Christmas.”
