Hi everyone, I am relatively new to this board, but I have been reading some of the storied on here and I am really impressed. I myself love to write, so I decided to start my own fanfiction story.
I apologize if the beginning is rather boring, but I'll try my best to make it more entertaining as it goes on. Basically, I'm going to start it off with Abby's reaction to when she first finds out she is pregnant in seson 12. I started it off this way to give a little bit more of the characters reactions and feelings that we don't (but wish to) see on the show. Basically, I'm just going to re-cap the whole Luby baby journey and add feelings and things that I wish/hope will happen. I hope you like it.

Chapter One: “The Second Time Around”
Abby closed her eyes and took a deep breath and she walked towards the bathroom sink. She knew the second she opened them again, her life may possibly be changed forever. She thought back to the last time she was in the same situation. Back then, her life had been a lot different. She was at the end of a troubled marriage, and struggling to make her way through medical school, not to mention quite a few years younger! Back then, she was alone in a great, big, world, just trying to get by. Now, here she was, Dr. Abby Lockhart; she had finally done it. With her eyes still closed, she smiled to herself at the realization that she had accomplished her dream.
She bit her lip and she slowly opened her eyes and looked down at the pregnancy test in her shaky, right hand. Without a word, she slowly stepped back and gripped the side of the cold bathtub and she slid down onto the tile floor. As she continued to stare at the blue line on the pregnancy test, tears began to well up in her awestruck eyes. Soon after, the tears began to flow down her cheeks in constant streams and although she tried her best to stop it, a slight smile formed in the corners of her lips. Her reaction struck Abby harder than the actual results had. Here she was a 37-year-old, unmarried, doctor and she was smiling.
She thought back to the last time she found out that she was pregnant. The last time Abby saw that blue line, she hardly shed a tear. She threw away the pregnancy test and made an appointment at the clinic that same day. She kept the news from her husband Richard, who was far to consumed with medical school to even bother to notice her existence. “Some people just aren’t meant to be mothers,” she had said to the doctor at the clinic, and he simply nodded in response. And that was all she had ever said about the first pregnancy.
She thought about it sometimes, mostly when she saw little babies or colleagues having children of their own. Back then, she had every reason in the world not to have a baby. Her marriage was failing, and who wants to bring a baby into a home like that? She was mid-way through medical school, and a baby would not go well with that. And then of course, there was Maggie. Abby thought back about the years she had spent struggling and fighting with her mother. Everyone saw Abby as the “lucky one,” because unlike her mother and younger brother, Eric, she was not bi-polar. But the truth was, Abby felt like the “diseased” one. After her father left, Maggie went through periods of deep depression. For years, she went off her pills and would often run away and completely abandon Abby and Eric. As a young girl, the responsibility of “motherhood” was placed thrust upon Abby. Not only was she left to practically raise her younger brother, but her own mother acted more like a child than Abby ever did. Growing, up, Abby was focused and guarded. While most other kids were out partying and having fun, she was cleaning the house, making dinner and studying. It was around that time that she decided to wanted to become a doctor. Then she would be in control. Being able to help others was Abby’s way of making up for never being able to help her mother or her brother, but mostly importantly, herself.
Abby wanted something better. Maybe that was why she went for Richard. They met during Abby’s first year of college at Penn State University. Abby was still 17, young for a college freshman, but more level-headed then most seniors. Richard was two years older and wanted to become a doctor too. Guarded and emotionless Abby was surprised at how fast she fell for Richard. He was so smart and focused, which was the main reason she agreed to marry him after only seven months of dating. What a mistake that had been.
Looking back, all of those moments and decisions seemed like a lifetime ago. So much had changed since then. Finally, she was happy. Abby was shocked to realize that this was the first time she admitted that she was happy, even to herself. She grabbed onto the sink and pulled herself up to look in the mirror and then reflection was one she liked. “I’m happy,” she said to herself, as the tears began to flow again. She couldn’t remember the last time she felt this way.
Abby knew who she had to thank for that; Luka. She still remembered the butterflies she got in the pit of her stomach the day that she first met him. “He’s gentle on the eyes, isn’t he?” Haleh had said to her. “I’ll say,” she had said, smiling. “Is he single?” Abby laughed out loud at the crazy things her feelings for Luka had made her do. Shy and boring Abby had been the one to kiss him first in the ambulance bay and she had even been the one to ask him out on their first date. It seemed their relationship was destined to be challenging even from the very beginning. Things became complicated with Luka on the way home from their first date after almost being mugged on the walk home. Luka protected her and for once Abby was the one who was being looked after.
Everything about Luka was exactly what Abby needed. It seemed that the two of them were in perfect balance. Things got complicated when John Carter entered the picture, and petty differences separated the two of them the first time. Now she couldn’t believe it had only been three weeks since they had “gotten back together.” Now look where she was. Still, despite the “news” whether it be good or bad that she was about to give Luka, Abby couldn’t keep the hint of a smile from her face.
Chapter Two: “My Christmas Gift”
For the first time in the last few years, Luka was truly excited to be going to the hospital Christmas party. After putting on his coat, he tucked a small brown box into his pocket. The truth was, he was a little embarrassed about the Christmas gift that he was about to give Abby. It had only been three weeks since he first kissed her, but a lot had changed. He searched hard for the perfect gift for Abby, but nothing seemed to be just right. He wanted a gift that would say something, the type of present that would say the words that he himself couldn’t find the right way to say. Christmas had never been the same since he lost his wife Daniela, and their two children in Croatia. He missed them all of the time, but especially around this time of year. But this year, he was happy. Even though they never verbally expressed their feelings, he loved Abby, and to him, that was all that mattered.
As Luka sat at the bar and waited for Abby, he nervously gripped the leather box in his coat pocket. He didn’t know why he was so nervous. There were so many things he wanted to say to Abby, but Abby was Abby, and he was Luka so of course things couldn’t be that easy. Abby was sensitive, and had been hurt in so many ways that no one seemed to be able to fix. Before he had lost his family, Luka’s heart was filled with faith and love. Once they were gone, so were his virtues. Luka became a doctor because he wanted to save people. That’s what he felt called to do. When it came time for him to save his own family, he failed. From that day on, he felt a void deep in his heart that he thought would never be filled. That was, until he met Abby. She was a mystery, waiting to be uncovered. With her, there was never a dull moment. You never knew what you were going to get. Together, it seemed, they had a perfect balance of love and insanity. They each knew when the other needed support or a little space to breathe. Separately, they were broken, but together….together they were whole. Through the good and the bad, they had always found their way back to each other. On the outside, Abby was hurt, but on the inside, Luka knew that she wanted desperately to love and be loved in return. He would never give up on Abby. He would save her. After all, she had been the one to save him.
Abby anxiously grabbed a snow globe from the convenient store shelf as she handed the cashier money with shaky hands. “Merry Christmas,” he said to her as she turned to leave. “You too,” she said with a dry smile. As Luka opened his present, she almost forgot the task that was on hand. She wanted nothing more than to sit there with him, and stay content in his presence for a long, long time. “You might think it’s kind of corny,” Luka said to her as he handed her the small leather box. “A compass?” Abby questioned, rather confused as she looked over at Luka. “I know,” he said smiling. “But it seems that we always seem to find our way back to each other.” Abby smiled as she began to bite her lower lip. “Can we talk?” She said, awkwardly.
The cold air hit Abby face as she quickly walked out of the bar. She kept walking to avoid eye contact with Luka. Her heart was racing. “These past three weeks, have been…. amazing,” she started. “I don’t remember the last time I felt this good.” Luka reached for her hand as a sign of reassurance. “For me too,” he added with a smile. Abby stopped and faced him because she knew she had no other choice. “I don’t want to ruin that,” Abby began. “You won’t,” Luka said, firmly. “It’s just that,” Abby paused. “What?” Luka said quickly. Abby turned and looked away. “Oh..man,” she sighed. Luka went to speak, but she interrupted quickly. “Luka, I’m pregnant,” Abby blurted out as fast as she could. The pair stood out in the cold winter air and looked at each other deeply, searching for the right words, or something to say. Abby tried her best to hold it back, but tears began to fill her eyes. Soon, Luka became a fuzzy blur standing in front of her. She had no choice but to blink, and let the tears roll down her frozen face. Abby was never good with emotions, so she closed her eyes in a desperate attempt to repress the memory of what she had just said. Suddenly, the teardrop rolling down the side of her face was stopped by a soft, warm finger. Abby kept her eyes closed as Luka pulled her in close to him and gently kissed the top of her hair.

Chapter Three: “Family or Freedom”
Abby lay in bed with Luka’s arm across her stomach, but sleep wouldn’t come. Her mind was racing with a million thoughts a second. She looked down at Luka’s hand and gently placed her hand on his. She turned her head to face his. He was sleeping peacefully, and she was jealous. She looked down at her flat stomach and tried to imagine herself being pregnant. She laughed to herself and Luka stirred next to her. “Go to sleep, Abby,” he said playfully as he gently kissed her ear and pulled her closer to him. Abby looked at the clock, it was 3am. “Work in four hours!” She thought to herself and she squeezed shut her eyes and willed herself to sleep. She listened to Luka’s slow, deep breaths and felt the rhythmic beating of his heart against her skin. His reaction had been so typical of Luka, forever loyal and loving. Sometimes she wondered why he wanted to be with her. Abby knew she could sometimes be difficult, in fact, very difficult, but he never pushed her away. He would be a wonderful father. She had no doubt about that. It was herself that she worried about. After all, her relationship with her own mother had not been a normal one. She had no idea how to be a mother. How would she forgive herself if her own kid turned out all wrong? And even worse, what if the baby was bi-polar? Everything right now was so perfect. She didn’t want to ruin it. Abby turned to face Luka, and was surprised to see that his eyes were open and he was looking at her too. “I’m scared,” she said to him, keeping her eyes fixed on his. Luka ran his fingers through Abby’s long, brown hair. “Whatever happens, Abby, I’m not going anywhere.”
Luka got out of the shower and dressed quietly so that he didn’t wake up Abby. Little did she know that she was lying awake, watching him. She did this sometimes, and it was comforting to her. She loved the way he put his shoes on before he zipped and buttoned his pants and the way that he brushed his teeth. He always got toothpaste all over his mouth, and all over the sink, kind of like a child would. For a minute, Abby imagined a little boy standing next to Luka, imitating his every movement. Luke looked happy, and the little boy looked happy and healthy. “If only I had a guarantee,” Abby thought to herself. “Then today would be a whole lot easier.” A minute or so after Luka went into the kitchen, Abby flung off her blanket and quickly got out of bed. She pinned up her hair into a messy clip as she walked into the kitchen. Luka looked up from his bowl of cereal. “Was I too loud? I didn’t mean to wake you on your day off.” He said. Abby pulled out the kitchen chair directly across from Luka and sat with her chin in her palms. “I have an appointment today,” Abby said. Luka nodded in response. “Do you want me to…” Luka began, but Abby quickly interrupted. “It would be easier if you didn’t.” Once again Luka nodded. “I know it has to be your decision Abby,” Luka said as he picked up his jacket and headed towards the door. The walk to the clinic was a lot more eventful than Abby thought it would be. She found herself noticing every mother and baby that passed her by. It was a cold January day, and Abby hugged herself as the cold wind blew. She watched a young mother pull a cap down over her little girl’s ears and then bend down and kiss her forehead. The young woman herself was hardly wearing anything, yet seemed un-phased by the chilly winter air. She seemed too content to care.
Abby signed her name and took a seat in the corner of the office. She felt so out of place, surrounded by pregnant women and mothers with young children. A young couple sat together across from her, holding hands and smiling at each other and she suddenly wished she let Luka come with her. Two toddlers sat playing together and their mothers talked to each other. Abby watched them, and didn’t even hear her name being called. “Abby?” Dr. Coburn called to her and she gently grabbed her shoulder. “Oh, I’m sorry,” Abby apologized. “No need to apologize. They are pretty cute, aren’t they?” Abby had to admit that they were pretty cute, even though the idea of raising a child on her own was terrifying. She stopped dead in her tracks as she realized the thought that had just passed through her mind. “I’m not alone,” Abby mumbled to herself. “I have Luka.” Dr. Coburn looked at her with a puzzled expression and she sat down in her chair. “Abby, are you okay?” She asked, concerned. Abby looked up at Dr, Coburn and she leaned against the exam room wall. She smiled quickly before she began to speak. “I’m keeping this baby,” Abby said, as tears ran down her cheeks. Dr. Coburn smiled and she got up and walked over to Abby. “Congratulations.” Abby walked home in somewhat of a daze. Soon enough, she found herself sitting on a park bench by the lake. She was still scared of the future and of having this baby, but she knew it was something that she had to do. This wasn’t just about her anymore. This was about her, and Luka, and their family. A family. She finally had a family. She knew how much Luka had loved his wife and his children in Croatia. She could sometimes feel the emptiness he had inside from losing them and sometimes he would even mumble the name of his little boy while sleeping at night. Abby knew that he needed this, and that meant that she needed it too. Luka walked up next to the park bench and stood beside Abby. She looked and him and she felt her heart melt. She was so overcome with emotion, she couldn’t find any words. Luka began to speak. “I was going to wait for you at the apartment, but I figured you might come home this way. Abby, I don’t want this one decision to ruin our relationship. You did what you had to do, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t still be together.” Abby lips moved until she finally found words. “I didn’t do it. I couldn’t,” she said. “I want to do this. I want us to have this baby.” Luka’s face remained expressionless, but she knew that he was relieved. He sat down on the bench and grabbed her hand. Together they sat for a while, silently happy. Abby no longer felt the cold winter air surrounding her. Right now, in this moment, she was filled with love. Luka turned and kissed Abby’s cheek to catch a tear that had begun falling down. That was Luka, he was always there to catch her tears. “I guess it’s the pregnancy hormones,” Abby laughed. Luka laughed too as he leaned his forehead down to touch hers. “Well, then I guess I don’t have an excuse,” Luka said as he pulled Abby closer. She felt a teardrop fall onto her neck, and she knew that it wasn’t her own. Abby sat there for a few moments, wrapped in Luka’s arms and she knew that everything would be okay. She wanted to stay like they were right now forever, but she had so much to say, so much to look forward to. “A few years ago, I had an abortion because I was young, and alone and afraid. And now I’m older, and still afraid, but I’m not alone anymore. For the first time in my life, I’m not alone. I have you, and our baby. I have a family for the first time in my life.” Abby stopped, only to see Luka’s eyes filled with tears. “Your beautiful, Abby,” Luka said. Abby kissed him gently and smiled. “Thank you, Luka. For everything.”

Chapter Four: “Shopping Spree”
“Is everything okay in there?” The salesperson called and she gently tapped on the dressing room door. Abby bit her lip and covered Luka’s mouth to hold in their laughter. “Maam?” “Luka, put your pants on!” Abby whispered to Luca as she scrambled to put her shirt back on. “Uh, yeah. Everything is fine. We were, umm…just discussing baby names.” Luka began to laugh and Abby elbowed him hard in the chest as she watched the feet move away from underneath the dressing room door. “Ouch, that hurt!” Luka yelled, still laughing. “Do you wanna keep it down?” Abby said, trying not to laugh too. She put her face into her hands for a second and then looked up at Luka, slightly embarrassed. “Did we really just have sex in the dressing room of the baby store?” Luka pulled her in close to him and kissed her neck. “Wanna do it again?” He whispered playfully into her ear. “Oh, God, Luka. Get off! What kind of parents are we?” Luka pulled a piece of Abby’s messy hair that was stuck to her forehead and tucked it behind her ear. “Hey, we are still young. I mean, this kind of wild behavior explains why we are having a baby,” Luka laughed. “We are the oldest ones in here!” Abby said. “This is just wrong, not to mention unsanitary.” Luka held out Abby’s coat for her to put her arms through. “Hey, you asked for it!” Abby began to search through the messy piles of clothes on the dressing room floor. “Don’t you think we should buy something?” Luka asked. Abby quickly searched through a pile of maternity clothes on the floor. “I guess these will work. I mean, I wouldn’t know because I didn’t actually put any clothes on while in here! Oh, yeah….we should probably buy these,” Abby said. “Because we had sex on them?” Luka added, putting his hands in front of his face to protect himself from a potential punch from Abby. They stumbled out of the dressing room and quickly paid for the pants. Abby made sure not to make eye contact with the sales woman, but by the look of the male cashier, Abby knew that they entire store already knew about them. Abby practically ran out of the store, but Luka took his time, still smiling as he walked out of the store. She couldn’t help but laugh at the ridiculous look on his face. “My God, you are like a kid in a candy store,” Abby said. “Wait, what does that mean?” Luka asked. Abby rolled her eyes. “You know, for someone who doesn’t believe in God or religion, you certainly refer to him a lot in daily conversation,” Luka said. “I’ll kick your ass!” Abby said, trying not to laugh herself. “With that smug look on your face, you look like you just found the prize in the Cracker Jack box!” Luka stopped walking. “What the hell is a ‘Cracker Jack’?” He asked, looking confused. Abby stopped and held out her hand for Luka. “I guess I should get used to this,” Abby said as Luka grabbed her hand. “Maybe I should buy one of those dog leash things so that you don’t wander off!” Abby laughed. Luka chuckled. “Well, then you might want to buy a muzzle too.” Abby raised her eyebrows. “And why is that?” She questioned. “Your lucky, because if we weren’t keeping this whole baby thing a big secret, then I’d have to go tell all of my buddies that I had sex with my pregnant girlfriend in the maternity store.” Abby stopped walking, and Luka playfully kept pulling her hand. “I’d kill you! I already can never go in that maternity store again! The whole store already knows we had sex in the dressing room!” Luka put his arms around Abby’s waist and looked down at her. “Well, I think your wrong,” Luka started. “We might have gotten away with it….if it wasn’t for your crazy sex hair!” Luka immediately broke away from Abby and began running down the street. Abby grabbed her hair and her jaw dropped. “Luka Kovac, I’ll get you!” She said as she ran up behind Luka and jumping, put her arms around his neck. He grabbed her legs and began walking, giving her a piggy back ride. “I guess I’ll have to get used to giving these again,” Luka said. “I haven’t done this in years.” Abby nodded, kissing his cheek and resting her head on his shoulder and he continued to carry her. “Sex hair, huh? How bad is it?” Abby asked. “You look beautiful, Abby,” Luka said. “You always do.”

Chapter Five: “The Name Game”
“So, I think once we find out the sex of the baby today, we should start trying to pick a name for the baby,” Luka said to Abby as they stepped into the elevator on their way to the OB floor. “Find out the sex?” Abby questioned. “But I want it to be a surprise.” Luka patted Abby’s growing stomach. “I think the baby wants us to know,” he said with a grin. “Oh come on Luka, that is the lamest excuse ever and you know it! Trying to use our unborn baby as a go-between!” Luka put both his hand on her stomach. “How do you know it’s a baby and not babies?” He questioned. “I am not having twins!” Abby yelled. “Identical twins run in my family,” Luka added with a wink. “Are you kidding me? Well, if your mutant Croatian gene makes me have twins, I’m going to kick your ass!” Abby loved sitting in the waiting room, but today, it seemed to take an exceptionally long time. “I’m hungry, Luka,” Abby said, leaning her head against his shoulder. “Hungry enough for three?” Luka said laughing. Abby rolled her eyes and laughed too. A little baby walked shakily over towards Abby and Luka as he balanced a toy car in his hand. He preoccupied mother hardly noticed that he wandered away and she tended to her other two children who had been fighting. He grabbed on to Abby’s knee with his drool covered fingers and held the car out for her to take. “Thank you,” she said, looking over and smiling at Luka. “What does a car go? It goes ‘beep beep’,” Abby said and she gently tickled the little boy’s belly and he laughed with excitement. “Hey, Luka, he likes me,” Abby said, excited. It was rare for Abby to act this way and to be perfectly content and carefree, so he cherished it. “Your beautiful,” he whispered into her ear as the baby grabbed her hand. A few seconds later, the little boy’s frantic mother came over searching for him. “Joey, why did you leave mommy?” She said, scooping up the little boy. Abby grabbed her stomach as the baby inside of her kicked. She smiled to herself. “I am so sorry about that,” the woman said. “They grow up so fast, you know? One minute their brand new, and the next they are walking.” Luka and Abby nodded. “No problem,” Luka said as the woman turned to walk away. “Say ‘bye bye’ Joey,” she woman said. The little boy waved his little hand at Abby and Luka as the woman and her children left the office. “Abigail Lockhart?” The receptionist called. “You can come on back now.” Abby and Luka stood up and it was then that Abby realized the little toy car was still in her hand. “Well, everything looks fine here,” Dr. Coburn said. “The baby is getting big.” Abby squeezed Luka’s hand tighter and looked over at him in the chair beside her. “Luka!” She yelled at she put her hand in front of his eyes. “Stop trying to see!” Luka laughed. “I can’t help it. I want to know!” Dr. Coburn turned off the monitor. “Surprises are nice,” she added. “Thank you!” Abby responded. “Well, it’s just easier to know,” Luka said. Abby and Dr. Coburn looked at each other. “Why?” Abby asked. Luka scratched his head. “Because I need to know!” Abby shook her head. “Well, here is a nice picture of your baby. And don’t even try it Luka, there is no way you’ll be able to tell in this one!” Luka continued to look at the picture with a puzzled look at his face as they rode the elevator downstairs. “Give it up, Luka!” Abby laughed. As they walked out of the elevator, Morris quickly came over to greet them. “Well, how did it go? Boy or girl? How is our baby?” Abby took the picture from Luka’s hand and put it into her coat pocket. “Morris, will you stop calling it ‘our baby’? It’s kind of creeping me out!” “Oh, come on, Abbs. Is it a boy or girl?” Morris questioned. “Abbs? Did he really just call me Abbs?” Luka shrugged. “Am I going to have to wait another couple of months to see if I won the bet then?” Morris asked. Abby stopped dead in her tracks. “Bet? You all are betting on the sex of my baby?” She said. “Our baby,” Luka added. “Our baby?” Abby snapped. “You are betting on whether on not the one tiny sperm that somehow managed to make it through my body and turn me into this is an X or a Y? Well, you better be right because Morris is not getting any of our money!” Abby laughed. “We never picked any names yet!” Luka yelled as he followed Abby down the hallway. “Did you bet on that too?” Abby asked sarcastically. “I was thinking of Celine for a girl, or maybe even Jewel,” Luka said. “Jewel?” Abby asked. “Yeah, I thought you liked her too?” Abby chuckled. “Well, I do. Were you looking through my CD collection or something? I just prefer that our baby isn’t named after a pop artist, that’s all.” Luka shrugged. “I’ll ask Morris for some ideas,” Luka said as he walked away. “Leave the naming to me, Luka,” Abby laughed. “I am not naming my child Archibold Morris!”
