Chapter Ten: “Just Open Your Eyes”
She slowly got to her feet, and for Abby, that was a sign. There was people and voices around her, but it all sounded so far away. She saw blood on her hand as she stood, and her head was pounding. Haleh quickly came to her side. “Are you alright, sweetie?” Haleh asked. Abby nodded slowly. “Is this okay?” She said, pointing to her head. “It looks okay,” Haleh answered. “We need some help over here!” Someone yelled. Still dizzy, Abby walked over to Jerry, injured on the floor. She looked around desperately for Luka, but kept working. “Where is he?” She thought to herself. “Keep working, he’ll be here soon.”
Abby struggled to start Jerry’s central line. Her hands were shaky, and her vision blurred. She shook her head as she tried to gain control of herself. “I can’t do it,” she said, finally stepping away and letting someone else take over. “There’s something we’re missing,” Morris said as he struggled with Jerry’s central line. Abby stood at the head of Jerry’s gurney and closed her eyes to escape the spinning room. “Abby, are you alright?” Haleh asked with concern. “I’m fine, just a little dizzy. I hit my head,” Abby answered. She turned to look at the x-rays and shook her head. “Focus, Abby,” she thought to herself. “The right hemithorax is slightly opaque, that’s blood,” Morris said. “The chest tube isn’t draining,” Abby added. “Not if it’s kinked or clotted,” Morris said. Suddenly, blood began to pour from the central line in Jerry’s chest. “Okay, we have a liter of blood in the chest.” “Where is another thermaseal?” Abby asked. Haleh answered. “Next door I think.” Abby nodded. “I got it. Be right back.”
Luka saw Abby walk through the door. He closed his eyes with relief in seeing that she was alright. “Thank God,” he thought to himself. He was silent, and laid still at the sigh of Abby. He was so happy that he lay there, almost paralyzed once again.
Abby bent down to pick up the supplies and was suddenly overcome with a tremendous amount of pain in her stomach. “Ow,” she cried and she bent over in pain. She put her hand between her legs, where the pain had resonated to. “Oh my God,” she thought to herself. “The baby… I have to get help.”
Luka glanced over at her, his heart dropped. She slowly stood up and was overcome with nausea and dizziness. She stumbled backwards and tried to balance herself as flashes of light passed in front of her eyes. She stood there for a moment, swaying slightly. “Don’t pass out. Don’t pass out,” Abby kept thinking to herself. The room continued to swirl in front of her eyes. She reached up to grab her still her spinning head and she saw it. Her hand was full of blood. As she looked at her hand, fear struck her. Her mind was full, her head ached, and the dizziness was taking over. A million thoughts passed through her head as she stared straight ahead, holding out her bloody hand.
Luka saw her. He too was overcome with fear. He began thrashing and banging as loud as he could. “Look at my Abby,” he willed as her looked at her, still unable to speak. “Look at me, you’ll be okay!” Abby continued to stare straight ahead as she pressed her bloody hand against the glass door that separated her and Luka. There was a flash of light and a sudden coldness. Abby closed her eyes, it was inevitable. Her last thought was of Luka. “Where are you Luka? I need you,” she thought as she leaned against the cold metal door and slid to the ground. She let the darkness take her.

And I don't know where to look My words just break and melt Please just save me from this darkness
As she fell, frustration, anger and emotion overcame Luka. He thrashed around in a desperate attempt for someone to hear him. He tugged and pulled to loosen the restraints. He moved his body back and forth and the gurney rocked. “Open your eyes, Abby,” he thought to himself. His chest began to burn and tears welled in his eyes. “I need you to open your eyes.”
Snow Patrol: “Open Your Eyes”
All this feels strange and untrue And I won't waste a minute without you My bones ache, my skin feels cold And I'm getting so tired and so old
The anger swells in my guts And I won't feel these slices and cuts I want so much to open your eyes Cos I need you to look into mine
Tell me that you'll open your eyes [x4]
Get up, get out, get away from these liars Cos they don't get your soul or your fire Take my hand, knot your fingers through mine And we'll walk from this dark room for the last time
Every minute from this minute now We can do what we like anywhere I want so much to open your eyes Cos I need you to look into mine
Tell me that you'll open your eyes [x8]
All this feels strange and untrue And I won't waste a minute without you

Chapter Eleven: “Unexpected Discoveries”
Morris, Ray, Carried and Haleh worked tirelessly to stabilize Jerry. “The second tube is draining,” Carried added with a sigh of relief. “He’s losing a lot of blood. Haleh, did you page surgery?” Haleh nodded. “They are backed up, but I told them this couldn’t wait,” she said. “Good,” Carried said. “I’m taking him up.”
Just then, Pratt and Neela walked into the trauma room. “I got your page. What the hell happened?” Pratt asked. “Oh my God, Jerry! Is he okay?” Neela asked. “There was a shooting,” Ray added, exhausted. “A shooting?” Pratt questioned. “Who the hell would do this?” Carrie nodded towards Jerry, covered in blood. “We could use a few extra pairs of hands.” Pratt and Neela nodded. “Speaking of hands,” Morris said. “Where is Abby?” Haleh nodded towards the adjoining room. “She went to get the thoraseal. Maybe she got sidetracked,” Carrie said. “Now, let’s get Jerry to surgery.” Morris nodded with a puzzled look on his face as he took the front of the gurney.
Haleh began to clean up the trauma room and Ray stood, looking at Neela and she stood, staring. “Maybe you should go home, Neela,” Ray said as he walked towards her. “You’ve had a long week.” Neela shook her head no. Just then, Pratt came into the trauma room, dressed in scrubs. “There are some hurt people out here,” he said. “Let’s go.” Haleh stopped cleaning and followed him. “Ray?” Pratt called back into the trauma room. “I’ll be right there,” Ray responded. Pratt nodded and walked out of the room. Neela and Ray stood alone in the trauma room. He reached his arm out and gently touched her arm. “I can’t,” Neela said, closing her eyes. She stepped away from him and laid her things on a supply table by the door. “Where is the extra board?” Neela asked. “The other one is shattered.” Ray nodded his head towards the door, keeping his eyes fixed on Neela. “Next door,” Ray said.
Minutes felt like hours to Luka as he lay in the darkened room. The two police officers were still unconscious on the floor next to him. He wasn’t sure if they were breathing. Luka struggled with each breath. His failed attempts to free himself or attract attention left him tired and in pain. The tube in his throat made it harder for him to take the deeper breaths he needed to fill his lungs. Tears rolled down his cheeks. “Let them be okay,” he kept repeating in his head. It seemed that no one could hear him.
And I don't know where to look My words just break and melt Please just save me from this darkness
Neela walked into the supply room, her eyes were blurry with tears. She stopped at the sight lying in front of her. “Abby!” She cried. She stood, frozen at the sight of her very pregnant friend, lying on the tile floor surrounded by a pool of blood. She ran to her side and knelt beside her on the floor. “Oh my God, Abby,” she said, crying. “Somebody help!” Neela’s hands were shaky as she checked Abby for a pulse. She sighed with relief as she felt a slow, but present pulse.
Luka quickly turned his aching head at the sound of Neela’s voice. His tears continued to flow, but this time, out of relief. Luka watched as Haleh and Pratt came running into the supply room. “Haleh, get Carrie! Hurry!” Neela screamed as Haleh went running out of the room. After that, their voices became muffled. Luka could no longer think. The looks on their faces were not good. He began thrashing and banging as loudly as he could. His wrists were bloody from his attempts to free himself. The burning in his chest no longer hurt him. He was numb. He felt nothing as he continued to thrash back and forth.
“She’s lost a lot of blood,” Neela said as she knelt beside Abby. “Does anyone know what happened to her?” Carrie and Haleh entered the room. “Abby!” Carried cried. “Oh, Abby.” Neela was overwhelmed. “Does anyone know what happened? Damn it!” She screamed. “She took a nasty fall,” Haleh said. “She said she was okay.” Neela put her hand on her forehead. “Well, she isn’t okay. Get a gurney!” Neela grabbed Abby’s hand. “Open your eyes, Abby. Come on, just open your eyes.”
Morris stood, staring at Abby. “This isn’t good,” he mumbled to himself. Suddenly, he heard banging and crashing from the other room. “What the hell is that?” he said, stepping closer to the door and peering through the blinds. He turned and ran out the door and around to the entrance of the other trauma room. “I need help, somebody help me!” Morris flung open the door to find Luka, intubated and thrashing. Luka didn’t even notice that anyone entered the room. “Luka!” Morris yelled. Luka’s head jerked up suddenly and looked at Morris. He could see the fear, panic and pain in Luka’s eyes. Luka’s head fell back and his body stopped convulsing. Morris ran towards the gurney and began to untie Luka’s arms and legs. “What the hell happened to you?” He asked a silent Luka. Once his arms were freed, Luka immediately reached towards the tube in his mouth. “You might need that!” Morris yelled as Luka quickly extubated himself. He rolled to his side and coughed loudly, struggling for breath.
Pratt and Ray ran into the room. They gazed at Luka as lay battered and bleeding as he gasped for air. “Abby,” was the only word that managed to escape Luka’s lips. Pratt came over and helped him to a sitting position as Ray and Morris ran to check on the police officers, still unconscious on the floor. “Carrie and Neela are with her,” Pratt said to Luka. “They are going to make sure she’s okay.” Luka continued to stare at Abby’s bloody handprint on the glass of the door. She was right there, just a few feet away. He had to get up. Luka grabbed Pratt’s arm as he pulled himself up. “Luka, you should take it easy!” Pratt yelled, but Luka just shook his head. Pratt didn’t resist as Luka stood up and wobbly walked out of the room.

Chapter Twelve: “Always By Your Side”
Luka stood in the doorway, staring at Abby lying on the floor. He willed himself to speak, to move, but nothing came. Neela looked up and saw him, her eyes were filled with tears. “Luka. Are you alright?” He didn’t respond, he just continued to stare. Carrie and Ray came up behind him with a gurney. Ray rushed by Luka and began helping Neela stabilize Abby. Carried looked up at Luka and saw the lost look in his eyes. She grabbed his hand. “She’s going to be okay, Luka.” A tear rolled down his cheer. “She’s going to be okay.”
As they lifted Abby onto the gurney, Luka saw the pool of blood that lay where she was. His eyes moved from the pool of blood to Abby’s face. She looked so pale. A sudden burst of energy hit Luka. His tears stopped and he walked over to the gurney as they were about to push it away. He climbed up onto the gurney and lay his head on Abby’s hair. He grabbed her bloody hand. Everyone looked at him, but he just closed his eyes. “I’m here, Abby.” Luka whispered into Abby’s ear. “I’m not going anywhere. Ever, ever again.” Neela bit her lip as she tried not to cry. “Let’s get her up to OB!” Carried yelled, and they wheeled them both away.
Dr. Coburn met them at the elevator. “What happened?” She asked as she looked Abby over. “She took a nasty fall during the shooting,” Carrie answered. “And him?” Dr. Coburn asked, nodding her head towards Luka. Carrie shook her head, but didn’t answer. “I mean, is he okay?” Dr. Coburn asked again. Carrie looked at Luka. “He just wants to be with her,” she said.
A crowd of doctors poked and pried Abby, but Luka didn’t budge. “I’m not moving,” he would say whenever anyone questioned him. Luka continued to hold Abby’s hand as he quietly watched the rise of fall of her chest. She was breathing, and right now, that was enough.
Snow Patrol: Chasing Cars
We'll do it all Everything On our own
We don't need Anything Or anyone
If I lay here If I just lay here Would you lie with me and just forget the world?
I don't quite know How to say How I feel
Those three words Are said too much They're not enough
If I lay here If I just lay here Would you lie with me and just forget the world?
Forget what we're told Before we get too old Show me a garden that's bursting into life
Let's waste time Chasing cars Around our heads
I need your grace To remind me To find my own
If I lay here If I just lay here Would you lie with me and just forget the world?
Forget what we're told Before we get too old Show me a garden that's bursting into life
All that I am All that I ever was Is here in your perfect eyes, they're all I can see
I don't know where Confused about how as well Just know that these things will never change for us at all
If I lay here If I just lay here Would you lie with me and just forget the world?
An oxygen mask was placed on Abby and monitors and machines were put on Abby’s chest and belly. “She’s breathing on her own, which is good, but the baby’s heart rate is lower than I’d like,” Dr. Coburn said to Carrie and Neela, who stood by Abby’s side. Dr. Coburn looked carefully at the ultrasound screen as she moved it all over Abby’s belly. This time, Luka did not even attempt to look at the ultrasound screen. “There….a placental abruption,” she said.
She looked down at Luka. “Dr. Kovac?” She called to him. He looked up at her with tired eyes. “Is our baby okay?” Was all that he said. You could hardly even detect that he was a doctor. “Abby is losing a lot of blood,” Dr. Coburn said as she looked down at the blood stained bed and Luka’s blood stained pants. “The baby is in trouble, Luka. We need to do an emergency C-section and get the baby out. We have to control the bleeding.” Luka nodded his head. “I want Neela to help you,” Luka mumbled, still staring. Dr. Coburn looked at Neela and Neela looked at Luka. “Me?” Neela questioned. “But I’m not a surgeon.” Luka looked up at Neela. “It’s what Abby would want,” he said. Neela looked at Abby and nodded. “Okay,” Dr. Coburn said. “Neela, go scrub in.” Luka grabbed Neela’s hand as she turned towards the door. He simply looked up at her and smiled.

Chapter Thirteen: “Those Long Awaited Words”
Abby was in a place different from anything she ever felt before. “Where am I?” She thought to herself. She felt cold and distant. Around her she heard beeping machines and muffled voices. She felt tired and weak. But what was it that she felt? A hand, someone’s hand- it had to be Luka. “But what is he saying?” She thought to herself. Then she remembered. The fall, the dizziness, the blood, the baby; was the baby okay? She remembered searching for Luka. She remembered needing him. She wanted to tell him something.
Luka now sat beside Abby as she lay on the operating room table. He still held her hand. The room was quiet except for the beeping of the machines attached to Abby. “I’m scared, Abby,” Luka said even though Abby’s eyes were still closed. “We are about to have a baby. You are going to be a mom.” He bit his lip as a tear rolled down his cheek and fell onto Abby’s hand. Her finger flinched. “We made a promise to do this together. I want us to do this together. I can’t do this alone, Abby. I need you. I need you Abby.” Abby closed his eyes and kissed Abby’s hand. “Open your eyes.”
Abby felt his touch and she knew his voice. His words seemed distant, but she heard them. She wanted to speak, but she couldn’t. “He needs you,” she thought to herself. She willed herself to open her eyes. At first, everything was a blur. Abby’s head still ached. She felt too tired to move, she was so cold. The beeping and muffled voices were becoming a little louder now. She was so cold, but her hand was warm. She felt the back and forth movement of Luka’s gentle touch on her warm hand and she squeezed it. Luka looked up and quickly moved to the top of Abby’s bed. Her vision was still blurry, but she could see his face, his bruised cheek and teary eyes. Abby’s eyes became teary too. One of the nurses came and stood next to Luka’s chair. “It looks like she heard you after all, Dr. Kovac,” the nurse said with a smile. Luka looked down at Abby and smiled.
She remembered the promise she made while she was lying on the ground. She wasn’t going to waste any time ever again. She moved her free arm up to her face and Luka helped her move the oxygen mask away from her face. Why had she waited so long? “I love you, Luka,” she said. Luka looked at her long and hard. His eyes become glazed with tears once again. Abby felt a tear roll down her cheek and watched as Luka leaned over and gently kissed the tear away. He stayed close to her face and she wiped away tears on both of his cheeks. “I love you so much, Abby,” he said to her. Then he leaned in and kissed her. “I love you more than you will ever know.”

Chapter Fourteen: “A Rush of Blood”
The bright lights no longer hurt her eyes, and the room was no longer spinning. Had this all been a dream? Her heart felt full, and she knew by that feeling alone that it had not been a dream. Abby slowly moved her hand onto her stomach. She closed her eyes and sighed as she felt the presence of her big belly. Luka put his hand on top of hers. “The baby?” She asked, holding back tears. Luka looked down as he began to speak. “There was an abruption of the placenta,” he began. “That’s why you were bleeding. It happened when you fell.” Abby nodded her head. Luka continued. “They are going to do a C-section. They need to get the baby out. The baby’s heart rate is down. They need to stop the bleeding.”
Abby closed her eyes. When she opened them, Dr. Coburn, Carrie and Neela were standing by her side. “Are you ready, Abby?” Dr. Coburn asked. Abby looked over at Neela. “Dr. Kovac asked if she could scrub in,” Carried added. “He said you’d like that.” Abby nodded. “Thank you,” she said to them. “Please,” Abby began, but Neela interrupted. “The baby will be fine, Abby,” she said. “I promise.” Neela grabbed Abby’s hand and she leaned down. “After all, isn’t that a godmother’s job?” Abby squeezed her hand as hard as she could, but she felt so weak. She turned her head to Luka who was looking at her funny. “What?” she asked, lifting the oxygen mask from her mouth. “Did she say…godmother?” Luka questioned. Abby reached out and Luka lowered his head closer to her face. She ran her hands through his hair. “It was supposed to be a surprise,” Abby whispered hoarsely. She was getting dizzy again. “There is another surprise for you in your locker.” Luka smiled at her.
Abby closed her eyes and when she found the courage, she opened them again. “The baby comes first. Okay Luka?” Abby said to him, her voice becoming shaky. He shook his head. “You are both going to be fine,” he started, but Abby held her fingers to his lips. “Just promise me.” Luka looked at her long and hard. He leaned down and kissed her forehead. “I promise.”
The surgical team was gathered around the table. “I’m starting,” Dr. Coburn said. “The time is 17:11.” Abby was scared. “This isn’t how this is supposed to happen,” Abby said to Luka. “It’s not supposed to be this way.” Abby looked from the monitors that showed both the baby and Abby’s heart beats, back to Abby. “Everything looks fine,” he said to her with a reassuring smile. “Besides,” Luka added. “We are Abby and Luka. Nothing can ever be easy for us.” Abby held in a laugh. “In a few minutes, we are going to have a baby,” Abby said. “I’m going to be a mom.” Luka nodded. “In just a few minutes, we’ll be a family,” he said. “And what I said this morning, about getting married,” Luka started. “That doesn’t matter to me. I’ll take the love for now. This is all I really need.”
Abby closed her eyes and waited. She waited to hear the cry of her newborn baby. Abby hated waiting. “There’s a lot of blood in here,” Dr. Coburn said. “Both heart rates are dropping,” Neela chimed in. “I need some suction,” Carrie added. “Alright, we need to get this baby out in the next sixty seconds,” Dr. Coburn said. Abby’s head was becoming a maze of thoughts. She was getting cold. “Alright, Neela. My hand is applying pressure to the sight of the abruption. I need you to get the baby out.” Neela nodded and nervously stepped forward. “I got him,” Neela said as she gently lifted out Luka and Abby’s newborn baby son. “It’s a boy!” She said, looking over and Luka and Abby as she walked the baby over to the incubator.
Abby’s lips were chattering as Luka kissed her. “Abby?” Luka said, as she gazed up at Abby’s heart monitor. “Heart rate is dropping!” One of the nurse’s yelled. “Abby, Abby, we have a son! Stay with me!” Luka’s voice was becoming distant again. “Can we name him Joe?” Abby asked, still shaking. “Yes, Abby. Baby Joe, it’s perfect. Stay with me,” Luka said, he looked over at Carrie, distraught. Suddenly, a small, weak cry came from the corner of the room where Neela stood with the baby. A smile formed in the corner of Abby’s lips and she tightened her grip on Luka’s hand. “I love you both, my boys,” Abby mumbled. Then, Abby’s tight grip on Luka’s hand loosened as she closed her eyes.
“She’s bleeding out!” Coburn yelled. “I need two units of O negative, now!” Luka looked at the puddle of blood on the floor beside the operating table. He stumbled backwards and Neela stood behind him. “I got you,” Neela said to Luka as she helped lower him to a chair. Luka leaned forward and fell into Neela and sobbed. Behind her, lay his tiny baby son.
