you are a very awesome writer! i can't believe how I can picture this happening (haha i know i said that before) but it's really good. Go ahead and clean your room hehe we wouldn't want you to get in trouble, but we will be waiting for your next update Thank you too! I love to write, but I have to write about something I'm really into. And of course I am a Luby fan just like all of you. I wrote a sort of mini-book a few years ago. I imagine everything happening as I write it...so maybe that's why you see it the same way. Thanks for reading. I'm going to work on it a little more now.

Chapter Fifteen: “New Beginnings”
Abby floated for a while, in a place that wasn’t exactly familiar to her. It was as if she was stuck in a bad dream and she couldn’t wake up no matter how hard she tried. In this bad dream, she was watching Luka. He was sitting on a park bench, watching a woman and two young children playing. His face was peaceful, with a smile firmly planted in the corner of his mouth. Suddenly, the woman was holding a newborn baby boy, wrapped in blue. He was small, but the dark hair on his head and his big round eyes made him look like Luka. Abby had seen this baby before. “That’s Joe,” she said to herself in the dream. Why was this woman holding her baby? Luka got up and walked towards the woman. “Daniela,” he called to her, reaching out his hand. Suddenly, she was gone and Luka sat down once again, all alone. He looked sad. “Everyone I ever loved is gone,” he said to himself. Abby got up to walk over to him. She noticed she was no longer pregnant. She suddenly felt empty and when she looked up again, Luka was even further away. She ran towards him yet he moved further. She kept going. “I am not giving up, Luka,” she yelled to him. “I’ll never leave you all alone.”
Snow Patrol: “The Finish Line”
The earth is warm next to my ear Insects noise is all that I hear A magic trick makes the world disappear The skies are dark, they're dark but they're clear
A distant motorcade and suddenly there's joy The snow and tickertape blurs all my senses numb It's like the finish line where everything just ends The crack of radios seems close enough to touch
Cold water, cleaning my wounds A side parade, with a single balloon I'm done with this, I'm counting to ten Blue as seas, running to them
I feel like I am watching everything from space And in a minute I hear my name and I wake I think the finish line's a good place we could start Take a deep breath, take in all that you could want
Luka held the phone close to his ear as a voice sounded on the other end. “Maggie?” He asked. “This is Luka, Abby’s… You have a grandson. There was an accident. The baby is okay, but I think you should come. It’s Abby.” He hung up the phone and rubbed his tired eyes. It had been a few hours, and there was no change in either Abby or baby Joe. “The baby is on a vent,” Dr. Coburn said to Luka. “We’ll have to keep him on there indefinitely. Other than that, he looks good. There aren’t any obvious signs of any physical or mental defects, but we’ll be monitoring closely for all of that. That’s always a risk when the brain is deprived of oxygen.” Luka nodded his head absently. He already knew all of this, after all, he was a doctor. “Can I see my son now?” Luka asked Dr. Coburn impatiently. She nodded and quietly led him into the NICCU.
Luka looked at baby Joe in the incubator. Tubes and machines were connected all over his body. He watched the rhythmic rise and fall of the baby’s chest through the glass. Luka wanted to hold his son, but he knew it wasn’t possible. He stuck his hand into the side of the incubator and gently touched Joe’s arm and the baby stirred in response. “Hi Joe,” Luka said to the baby. “It’s Daddy. I’m so glad to finally meet you. I’m so glad that I have you, that I have a son.” He smiled as the baby slowly moved his tiny legs at Luka’s touch. “Volim te,” Luka said to his son in Croatian. “I love you.”
He pulled a stool over and sat down, still watching the baby’s every move. “Your mommy will be here to see you soon. I promise you that,” he said to baby Joe. “Your mommy is a little scared right now. Things have never been easy for her. But she loves you very, very much. She loves you more than anything in the world.” Luka was silent for a few minutes. “So, you have to hang on there buddy. Get strong for me and for your mommy because we need you. You mean the world to us.” Luka gently held Joe’s hand and then stood up from his chair. “Vidjeti te skoro,” he said. “I’ll see you soon.”
As he was walking back down the hallway to visit Abby, Luka remembered something that Abby had said to him a few hours earlier. “There is another surprise for you in your locker,” Abby had said to him. Luka opened his locker and sat down. Inside was a box wrapped in wrapping paper with pink and blue rattles on it. He smiled to himself and a sharp pain ran through his bruised jaw.
Luka began to open the present first, and put the card on the chair beside him. He had always been a little backwards in that way. “Do they do everything ass backwards in Croatia?” Abby had said to him once. Luka opened the box, and he couldn’t believe his eyes. Inside lay a tiny, white baptismal gown. Luka ran his fingers along the smooth silky material. “It’s perfect,” he said out loud. Then, he opened the card. Inside, Abby had written a short note to him. Luka, I hope this gift touches your heart the way you have touched mine. I am so happy we are doing this together. I couldn’t imagine my life without you, and although I haven’t had the courage to say it, I hope you know how much I love you. -Abby
Luka held the card close to his chest as the reality of what just happened finally hit him. He broke down and began sobbing. Once he had cried his last tear, Luka put the card into the box and got up. He walked back to Abby’s room and sat beside her, grabbing her hand. “Thank you for the gift, Abby” he said to her. “It’s perfect.” Abby did not move at his words. She lay on her back, with her head turned slightly towards him. Her eyes were closed, and she looked peaceful. Her color had come back but she was still slightly paler than usual. Abby’s left arm was resting on her now flat stomach. It was strange for Luka to see this at first, but he smiled as he thought of his son. “Joe is beautiful,” Luka said to Abby. “He looks just like you.” He gently lifted Abby’s arm and gently rubbed her hand. “Well, except…” Luka began and Abby stirred. She did not open her eyes, but she squeezed Luka’s hand. “Except, he has your eyes,” she said to Luka, as she slowly opened her eyes and looked at him. They both smiled, and Luka kissed her lips. “How do you know?” He asked her, puzzled. “I have my sources,” she laughed, remembering her dream.

Chapter Sixteen: “Puzzle Pieces”
Abby sighed as Luka rested his forehead against hers. “You scared me, Abby,” he said quietly. “I thought I might lose you.” Abby ran her hand through his hair. “Never,” she said, gently kissing his lips. He smiled at her as he sat back down next to her. The smile faded from Abby’s lips. “How is the baby?” She asked him. Luka looked down at Abby’s hand in his own. “Well, I already told you he is beautiful,” Luka said, smiling slightly. “But, looking at us, I guess that’s a given.” Abby smiled for an instant and the became serious again. “Luka, how is the baby?” He sighed. “Well, he’s on a vent,” Luka began. Abby closed her eyes and looked away. “His heart rate got pretty low, and there is always a chance that he could have some complications because of the oxygen deprivation,” Luka finished. Abby began to cry. “Abby, everything will be okay,” he said to her. She shook her hair. “How do you know, Luka? You can’t know for sure.” Luka leaned closer to Abby. “Well, if he’s anything like you and I, he’s got the best chance there is.” Abby smiled. “Now, let’s go see our son,” Luka said.
Abby needed Luka’s help to get out of bed and into a wheelchair. “I feel so weak,” she said to him and she rested her head on her hand. “You lost a lot of blood, Abby,” he said. “Not to mention, you just had a baby!” As they continued towards the NICCU, Abby became increasingly nervous and emotional. “Wait, Luka,” Abby said just as Luka went to open the door. Luka knelt down beside her. “What’s wrong?” Abby sighed. “I’ve been scared of this moment for my entire life. And after all this, I…I just don’t know. I’m still scared or worried, or both. I really can’t explain how I feel.” Luka laughed. “What could possibly be funny?” Abby snapped. Luka shook his head. “Abby, you a parent now, you better get used to that feeling because it never goes away. Now, it’s time to meet your son.”
Not thoughts passed through Abby’s mind when she first saw her son. She couldn’t believe it. There he was, in front of her. She had a son. “I told you he is beautiful,” Luka said, sitting on a stool next to Abby. She simply nodded and put her hands to her face. She looked at Luka and smiled. “We did it. Is he…that’s our baby,” Abby said, tripping on her words. Luka nodded. “He is our son. This is our family,” Luka said, grabbing Abby’s hand. Abby continued to stare at her son, and tears filled her eyes. Suddenly, she looked over at Luka. “Can I…touch him?” She asked. Luka nodded. “I think he’d like that,” he said with a gentle smile.
Abby slowly reached her hand into the incubator and gently touched the baby’s hand and then his arm. Luka watched as her smile grew when the baby moved his tiny hands and feet. “I think he likes me,” Abby said with a laugh and a smile. “Of course he does,” Luka laughed back. “Talk to him.”
At first, Abby moved her lips, but no words came. She was so overcome with emotion and happiness that she didn’t know how to express herself. “Hi Joe,” Abby started. “This is…well…it’s me…your mommy.” Luka brushed a tear from his eye as he watched her talk to their son. “I’m your mom and I know sometimes you’ll probably get mad at me because I do silly things sometimes, but I want you to know that no matter what happens, I love you and I’ll always, always be here for you. No matter what.” Abby paused. “You probably don’t understand this now, but maybe you will when you are older. Mommy was like a puzzle with missing pieces for a long, long time. Well, you are brand new, you don’t even know what a puzzle is, but that doesn’t matter. Before I had you and your daddy, I was broken I had two missing pieces. Then your daddy came along, and he loved me like no one else ever has. He gave me his heart, and I wasn’t broken anymore. But what I didn’t know was that I still had one piece of the puzzle missing, and that was a baby, that was you. So today, for the first time in my life, I know what it feels like to be whole. I’m not missing any pieces anymore. I have everything I need.” Abby reached out and gently took Luka’s hand in hers. Together, both their hands touched the hand of their son. “Now I have everything,” she said as she looked from the baby to Luka and smiled.

Chapter Seventeen: “Only a Mother’s Touch”
Abby didn’t leave baby Joe’s side for the next week. “Abby, you should rest,” Luka said to her. “I’ll stay here with the baby.” But Abby shook her head no. “I’m afraid I’ll miss something.” Luka laughed. “Well, if your lucky you might miss him poop,” he said, but Abby didn’t laugh. “That’s not funny, Luka,” she said with a serious face. Luka shrugged. “Well, I’m just saying, you’ll get to see him poop a lot for the next few years.” This time, Abby did laugh as she hit Luka with a blue teddy bear. She looked down at Joe. “Your daddy is silly. Just because he doesn’t want to see you poop, doesn’t mean I don’t want to!” Luka rolled his eyes. “Well, Joe, your mommy is sleep deprived and I think she’s gone crazy!” They both laughed. “He probably thinks your both weird,” Neela chimed in as she walked up behind them. “Don’t worry, Joe. Aunt Neela will come and take you away from them when they are making you mad. I’ll take you to the zoo and to the park and buy you lots and lots of sugar and then give you back to them so you can keep them up allll night!” Neela said with a laugh. “You two go get something to eat,” Neela said. “Let me bond with my godson.” Abby reluctantly got up. “I’ll be back really soon,” she said, slowly letting go of baby Joe’s hand.
Luka watched as Abby played with her food, but hardly ate anything. “You should really try to eat something,” he said to her. Abby continued to play with her food. “Are you okay?” Luka asked, concerned. Abby shook her head. “What if we lose him, Luka?” When she spoke, and overwhelming sadness filled her voice. “And don’t say we won’t, because you can’t promise me that.” Luka looked at Abby. “You just have to have faith, Abby,” he said to her. “Faith in what exactly?” Abby asked. “Faith in God, faith in each other, and faith in our son, Abby. That’s all we can do.” Abby looked at Luka and smiled. “Okay,” she said. “That is something I can do.”
Abby rushed back into the nursery when she saw a team of doctor huddled around Joe. “What happened?” She yelled, looking at the baby. “Everything is fine, Abby,” Neela answered. Dr. Coburn stepped forward. “We tried to take him off the vent, Abby. He is fine. He’s just not strong enough yet.” Luka put his hand on Abby’s shoulder as she sat beside Joe. He knew her tears were inevitable. “Be strong, Abby,” he said to her. “All we can do is just have faith.”
She continued to sit with Joe for the rest of the afternoon. Luka went home to take a shower and change into a fresh pair of clothes. Eventually, fatigue took over and Abby fell asleep by Joe’s side. When she woke up, the person that greeted her was not exactly welcome. “He’s wonderful, Abby,” her mother, Maggie said to her. She was seated on the other side of the incubator, across from where Abby was sitting. “Luka called me the day he was born,” Maggie said, avoiding Abby’s question.
“I’m sorry that it took me so long to come, but I have a job now, responsibilities.” Abby glared at her mother. “I have responsibilities too, Maggie,” Abby said. “I’m a mother now, and unlike you, I will never, ever abandon my family.” Maggie sunk back into her chair a bit at Abby’s angry words, but she didn’t retaliate, instead she just nodded her head. “Your right Abby,” Maggie started. Abby looked at her stunned. She never once remembered Maggie telling her that she was right. “I was a bad mother, I know that. That’s something I can never change. And I know you will be an amazing mother and you’ll never do any of the terrible things to your son that I did to you.” Maggie’s words left Abby speechless. “I don’t expect you to ever forgive me, Abby. But I’m your mother, and I love you. A mother’s love, despite everything, is unfailing. And I know that you know that now more than ever.” Abby looked at her mother and nodded. “I never stopped loving you Abby,” Maggie said. “I came here because I thought you might need a mother, like Joe needs you now.”
Abby stood up and Maggie waited for the angry screams that she was used to getting from Abby, but there was only silence. Instead, Abby looked down at Joe and a sense of peace and calmness filled her. “I’ll always need you, Mag…mom,” Abby said. Maggie stood up and walked over towards Abby with her arms held out to embrace her. Abby surprised herself by walking over and hugging her mother. Although it was rare for Abby and Maggie to embrace, just like always, Abby had to admit that it felt good.
