Chapter Forty-Eight: “Collisions”
Luka and Carter embraced for a moment at the baggage claim. “Hey, Carter,” Luka said. “Welcome home.” Carter stepped back and smiled at Luka. “It’s nice to be home,” he said. Carter had two suitcases with him. “Big traveler?” Luka said, laughing. Carter laughed too. “Yeah,” he said. Luka turned off the alarm on his newer Mercedes model car. “New wheels?” Carter asked as he got into the car. “Newer wheels,” Luka laughed as she started the engine. “I gave the Volvo to Abby.” Carter smiled politely and nodded. “Ah,” he said. “How is she?” Carter asked as then started on their way. “Abby is Abby,” Luka said, glancing in the rearview mirror before switching lanes. “A lot had happened and a lot has changed, but she’d still the same…for the most part at least.” Carter laughed. “I’m glad to hear that,” he said.
Carter paused for a minute and thought about Abby and everything she’d been through and that they’d been through over the years. He’d left her to fend for herself the first time he went to Africa and didn’t come back, well at least until he came back with Kim, and the news that they were expecting. He’d proudly shown Abby the ultrasound picture. He still remembered the look on her face, it was that face that Abby gave when she was trying desperately to be happy for someone even though it was obvious that she was hurting. He had loved her and part of him still did, but not in the same way. He cared about Abby as a friend and as a former coworker. That was it. He remembered the feeling he’d gotten when Pratt told him that Abby was pregnant. He had hardly believed it. Now she was a mother, she had a 9 month old son and was about to marry Luka. It was amazing how things had turned out for all of them.
They reached the hospital and piled out of the car. Carter grabbed his luggage from the back seat of the car. “I’ll go right to my hotel from here,” he said, waving his hand. “Thanks for picking me up at the airport.” Luka nodded. They walked through the sliding doors and Carter was suddenly bombarded by all of his old friends.
Luka disappeared quickly to find Abby. He found her a few moments later suturing a young girl’s hand. “Hey,” he said, gently putting his hand on her back. Abby smiled up at him. “Hey,” she said, looking back down at her work. The little girl studied them carefully. “Is he your husband?” The little girl asked, smiling up at Luka. Abby laughed. “Now, Lily, that isn’t nice to pry.” The little girl chuckled. “Stay still sweetie,” Abby said to Lily. “Sorry,” the nine year old said, sitting very still. Abby smiled at her. “It’s okay,” she said. “You are being very brave.” Lily’s face lit up. “Thanks,” she said, smiling proudly. “Dr. Lockhart, do you have any kids?” Lily asked. Abby nodded. “Yes, actually,” she said. “I have a 9 month old little boy. His name is Joe.” Lily smiled. “Do you have a picture?” The little girl asked. Abby finished a suture and dabbed it with gauze. “Umm, not with me,” she said. Luka interjected. “I have one,” he said, pulling out his wallet and smiling. The little girl grabbed the picture with her free hand. “He’s really cute!” Lily said. “Are you his daddy?” She asked Luka. He nodded. “I am,” he said. “So you two are married!” Lily said excitedly. “When did you get married?” Abby was growing a little impatient at the child’s curiosity, but she laughed it off. “Uh, tomorrow,” she said, taping a piece of tape over the sutures. “Tomorrow?” Lily asked. “You have a baby but you aren’t married yet?” Dr. Lockhart stood up and quickly glanced at Lily’s mother. “She needs to keep the wound dry for five days. That means no baths and washing that hand. The stiches will come out in a week,” Abby said. Lily’s mother nodded. “Tell Dr. Lockhart thank you,” Lily’s mother said. Lily smiled. “Thank you Dr. Lockhart,” she said. “Of course, if I ever come back again, you’ll have a different name, right?” The little girl asked. Abby laughed and walked towards the curtain. “Let’s hope you don’t have to come back here again for a long time,” Abby said, throwing her gloves into the trash can. Lily’s mouth opened. “Kovac,” Luka said to her. “My last name is Kovac.” Lily smiled. “Bye Dr. Kovac!” She yelled, waving her bandaged hand. “What a pain in the ass!” Abby said as she erased Lily’s name from the board. “I thought she was cute,” Luka chimed in. Abby laughed. “Cute?” She questioned. “Yeah, she was cute…for about the first 10 minutes.” Luka laughed as Abby picked up another chart. “You gotta love necrotic tissue,” she said, holding up the chart. “You would think that black skin around an infected wound would tell you that something is wrong!” She said laughing and turning to walk away. “Hey, Abby,” Luka said, grabbing her arm. “Yeah,” Abby answered, turning to face him. “Carter is here,” he said. “I just thought I’d give you a head start.” Abby laughed. “You mean a heads up?” She said, smiling. “Close enough,” he said. “I figured he’d get here eventually,” Abby said, looking from the chart to Luka. His face was serious. “What?” She asked. Luka shrugged. Abby stepped back towards him and threw her chart down on the counter. “Luka,” Abby started, grabbing the bottom of his chin and forcing him to look at her. “We are getting married tomorrow. He is your best man. Don’t you think I would have said something by now if I wasn’t okay with it?” She said, smiling slightly. Luka was silent. “Everything that happened with Carter, it’s all irrelevant anymore. None of that matters. I cared about him once, but he went to Africa. When he left, so did my feelings for him. I love you Luka, you know that. You came back to me and I know you’ll never leave me again.” Abby leaned in and gave him a quick kiss on the lips. She watched as the corners of his mouth turned upwards into a smile. “Now cheer up!” She said, grabbing the chart. “We’re getting married tomorrow!” Luka laughed and watched Abby as she headed towards curtain 2. He picked up a chart and followed her example.
Abby was reading her finished chart as she walked towards the main lobby desk. She walked with her head down and a moment later, ran into someone. She stumbled backwards and steadied herself. She recognized the top of the head that bent down to pick up the chart she had dropped. “Sorry,” Carter said, standing up and handing her the chart. “It was my fault,” Abby said. “I wasn’t watching where I was going.” They stood there awkwardly for a moment and then Abby moved forward and quickly embraced Carter. “It’s good to see you, John,” Abby said. It felt weird for her to say his name. She’d almost forgotten that he existed. “You too,” he said, smiling. “You look good, Abby,” he said, looking her over. Abby looked down at herself. “The last time I saw you, you were still a nurse,” he said, laughing slightly. Abby chuckled too. “Yeah, it’s been a long time,” she said. “How is the baby?” Carter asked without much hesitation. Abby smiled. “He’s doing well,” she said. “He’s getting big.” Carter nodded. “I’m really glad for you, Abby,” he said. “You finally seem to be really happy.” Abby nodded and smiled to herself at his words. “I am,” she said. “It’s amazing how things change, isn’t it?” She said to him. She looked closely at John as he spoke. He looked different from the last time she’d seen him, but he still looked like the old John she used to know. He was a little thinner with more noticeable dark rings under his eyes, but other than that he seemed the same. For a moment, she thought about how it must have felt for him to find out that she was pregnant, and now that she’d had a son, since he’d lost his own son not all that long ago. She decided to joke about it. “I bet you were surprised when you found out that I was pregnant and then that I was getting married,” Abby said, laughing a little. Carter looked down and smiled a little. “I was a little,” he said. “But I was happy for you.” Abby nodded. “Thanks, John,” she said. “I’m glad you’re here.” Carter smiled. “Anytime,” he said. Abby looked back down at her chart. “Well, I need to finish up here, so I better get back to work,” she said. John nodded. “Sure,” he said. “I’ll see you later.” Abby smiled and walked away, a sense of relief and freedom followed her.

Chapter Forty-Nine: “Chips & Strippers”
“How has he been?” Abby asked Amy, the babysitter when she walked into the apartment. “He’s been good all night,” she said. “He’s really starting to get around fast!” Amy said, smiling. Abby smiled back. “How long has he been asleep?” Abby asked, glancing in at the sleeping baby. “Only about twenty minutes,” Maggie called from the bathroom. Abby nodded. “Good,” she said. “He should be out all night for you then.” Amy nodded. “I’ll get some studying done then,” she said. Abby laughed. “I remember nursing school,” she said. “When everyone else was out partying, I was reading my anatomy textbook,” Abby said. “Well, Abby,” Maggie chimed in. “You never were much of a partier.” Abby rolled her eyes at Amy. “That’s what she thinks,” she whispered to the babysitter. “Are you ready, Mom?” Abby called into the bathroom. “Just a second, honey,” Maggie called back. A moment later, Maggie walked into the room wearing a spiffy black dress. “Wow,” Abby said. “That makes me look like crap,” she said, looking down at her grey slacks and blouse. “Nonsense!” Maggie said, grabbing Abby’s arm. “Now let’s go have some fun!”
Abby and Maggie reached Neela apartment to find everyone already there. “Are we that late?” Maggie said, looking down at her watch. Neela shook her head. “No, we just wanted to get started early.” All of the girls laughed. Abby looked around the room at her small but close group of co-workers. Neela, Sam, and Haleh stood by the kitchen table. “Dr. Weaver and Dr. Coburn should be here soon,” Sam said to Abby. “Sounds good,” Abby said, dipping a potato chip in some french onion dip. “This is really good,” she said to Neela with her mouth still full. “Haleh made it,” Neela said. “It’s really good,” Abby repeated, looking at Haleh. “I’m sorry that us nurses have to work tomorrow, Abby,” Haleh said. “Or else we’d love to be there.” Sam nodded in agreement. “I’ll tell Luka to give you overtime,” Abby said, laughing.
There was a knock at the door and a moment later, Dr. Weaver and Dr. Coburn walked in. “Sorry we’re late!” Dr. Coburn said. “I had to deliver a set of twins.” Dr. Weaver laughed. “And I had to deal with the father. He passed out and hit his head on a table!” Everyone laughed. A moment after they shut the door, there was another knock. Abby looked around. “Who else is coming?” She whispered to Maggie. Her mother face tried desperately to cover a smile. “Mom, who else is coming?” Abby demanded. Her mother walked over and sat on the chair. A moment later, Abby’s jaw dropped as a tall, handsome and well-built man walked into Neela’s apartment. “Who here is getting married?” The blonde haired man said. Abby suddenly felt old. “I’m going to kill you guys!” She mumbled under her breath. “He’s younger than me!” Abby stood horrified at the stripped was pointed in her direction. He stood in front of her and ripped off his shirt, exposing an incredible stomach and chest. Abby had always thought Luka has a pretty nice stomach, until now. “I’m Dan. Dan the man,” the stripper said, kissing each girl’s hand. The entire room erupted into laughter. Abby shook her head and blinked to stop from staring. She looked over at her mother, smiling and laughing. “Now I know why she wore that dress!” She said to Sam as she pointed at her mother. Maggie stood up to get a drink, but didn’t take her eyes off of Dan for more than a few seconds. At the end of his little show, Dan made an announcement. “Now,” he began. “I have a little treat for the bride,” he said. “Where is she?” He asked, heading towards Abby. Panicked, she laughed and grabbed her mother. “Here she is,” she said, pushing Maggie towards Dan. “Abby!” She called back, shocked at first, but then she began to laugh as Dan grabbed her hand and sat her down on the chair. Maggie jaw dropped much like Abby’s just had as Dan gave her a little lap dance. Abby leaned into the counter, doubled over with laughter. She couldn’t remember the last time she laughed this much.
The guys played pool and had a few beers at the bar. Luka, Carter, Pratt, and Ray were there. “It’s a shame Morris had to work,” Ray said. “Or else he’d probably be at the girl’s party.” Everyone laughed. “I wonder what they are doing anyway,” Ray said suddenly. “Probably eating junk food and watching a chick flick.” Pratt laughed. “You only wonder what they are doing because Neela is there,” Pratt said, as Luka elbowed Ray. Ray laughed and ran his hand through his head. “I bet they have a stripper,” Carter said. The guys looked at him. “You think so?” Luka asked. Carter nodded. “Don’t forget, Maggie is there.” Luka nodded. “That’s true,” he said. “You better hope he’s not too hot, Luka,” Pratt said. “Or else Abby may be all up on that.” Luka made a shocked face and all of the guys burst into a fit of laughter.
Luka was still a little buzzed when he got in. It was close to three in the morning. Abby was already in bed, sitting up with the lamp on. “What time did you get in?” He asked. “Around 1:30,” Abby said. Luka smiled. “Not that exciting?” He asked. Abby shook her head. “The opposite, actually,” Abby said. “Was there a stripper?” Luka asked, his eyes opening wide. “How did you know?” Abby asked. “Son of a bitch!” Luka said. “They were right!” Abby narrowed her eyes. “Who was right?” She asked. “Carter, and the guys. Carter said there would be a stripper and Pratt said he’d be really hot and you’d be ‘all up on him’ or something.” Abby laughed. “Well, there was a stripper,” she said. “But I wasn’t the one all up on him,” she said, nodding to the nursery where Maggie slept on the pull out couch. “No way!” Luka said, laughing and crawling into bed next to Abby. “You better not be hung over at our wedding!” Abby said, ruffing Luka’s hair. He looked up at her and smiled. “I’m okay,” he said. “Don’t you worry.”
Luka stripped down to his boxers and climbed under the covers. He put his arms around Abby and laid his head on her stomach. “I can’t believe we’re getting married tomorrow,” he said. “It’s like the happiest day of my life.” Abby looked down at him. “You don’t mean that,” she said. “I’m sure the first time was the happiest day of your life.” Luka shook his head. “That was a different life for me,” he said. “I was a different person. I hadn’t found myself yet.” Abby smiled as Luka kissed her cheek. “Did you find yourself yet?” She asked. Luke looked into her eyes, his face was serious. “Of course I did,” he said. “The day I fell in love with you.” Abby smiled. “And when was that?” She asked, preying on his drunkenness. “The first time we made love,” he said, still looking into her eyes. “I couldn’t stop looking at you. You were so beautiful.” Abby felt her eyes fill with tears. “You have to believe me,” he said, grinning at her. Abby smiled. “I believe you, Luka,” she said. “Because that’s when I fell in love with you too.”

Chapter Fifty: “Reflection”
Abby woke up to the sound of the alarm and she leaned over sleepily and switched it off. She turned over to find the bed next to her empty. She sat up quickly as a nervous feeling reached the pit of her stomach. “Oh my God,” she said to herself. “I’m getting married today.” Abby turned to get out of bed and found her mother standing at the bedroom door. “Good morning,” Maggie said to her. “Morning,” Abby said. “Where’s Luka?” She asked her mother. Maggie smiled. “I sent him and Joe over to my hotel room,” she said. “You sent them to your hotel room?” Abby questioned, wiping the remaining sleep from her eyes. “Yes,” her mother said. “After all, it’s bad luck to see the bride on her wedding day!” Abby laughed. “Now, come eat your breakfast,” her mom said, grabbing Abby’s hand. “Luka made it for us before he left.” Abby put a forkful of eggs into her mouth and then glanced at the clock. “It’s 9 o’clock already?” She said. Maggie nodded. “Hurry up and eat,” she said, nodding at Abby’s plate. “We have a lot to do before my little girl gets married!” Abby picked at her food but she was too nervous to eat. “If I eat this, I might throw up,” she said, standing up and putting her plate into the sink.
Neela arrived at 9:30. Abby was laying in the bathtub. “She’s been in there for almost an hour,” Abby heard Maggie say to Neela. A moment later, there was a tap on the door. “Okay, I’m getting out!” Abby said, standing up and grabbing a towel. Abby threw on one of Luka’s shirts and sat on the bed. Neela started with her makeup while Maggie worked on her hair. “We are just going to give you some loose curls,” Maggie chimed in. Abby nodded, but her mind was elsewhere. She put the sleeve of Luka’s shirt up to her nose. She closed her eyes as she took in his scent, his smell. It made her weak at the knees. She wished Luka was with her now. She had no doubt he would be holding Joe and watching from the other room, talking to the baby in Croatian and passing loving glances at her. “God I love him,” Abby heard herself blurt out. Neela and Maggie looked at each other and then at Abby and smiled. Abby turned red. “His smell makes me weak!” Abby laughed, holding out Luka’s shirt for Neela to sniff. “How pathetic is that?” She asked. “Michael used to do this thing right after he shaved. He’d rub his face against mine and I’d go numb,” Neela sad, her eyes growing sad for a moment and then a smile formed. Maggie smiled. “And your father,” Maggie began, but Abby held up her hand. “Mom, I don’t think I want to hear this,” she said, laughing. Maggie laughed. “I think Eric might have been conceived because of it,” she added. Abby shook her hand. “Okay, I’ve heard enough!” Abby laughed.
“Time for your dress,” Maggie said, grabbing Abby’s hand. Both Maggie and Neela were already dressed. Abby stood up and without looking into the mirror first, walked towards the dress. She took it from the hanger. “We’ll wait outside,” Maggie said, grabbing Neela’s arm and closing the door behind her. Abby slid the dress onto her body. She closed her eyes and took and deep breath before she turned to face the mirror. She looked in the mirror at herself. Her hair with it’s gently curls accented the dress perfectly. Her make-up was subtle but noticeable. She felt beautiful, truly beautiful for the first time in her life. A smile covered her face, one more true than she had felt in a very long time. She didn’t feel as if anything could take it away. “I’m getting married,” she said to herself. “I’m finally getting married.” In the mirror, Abby noticed the faces of Maggie and Neela in the back round. She turned to face them, her eyes were becoming blurry. “Oh, Abby,” Maggie said, putting her hands to her face. “My little girl.” It took Abby a minute to find words. “Can you zipper it?” She said to her mother. “I couldn’t reach.” Abby turned back around to face the mirror. “Just like when you were a little girl,” her mother whispered in her ear and then gently kissed her cheek. Abby tried to stop it, but a tear rolled down her cheer. This time, her mother was the one to stop it with her thumb. Abby realized she must have learned it from her mother. “Don’t cry, Abigail,” her mother said. “Today is a happy day, a very happy day.” Abby nodded. “I am happy, Mom,” she said. “Happier then I have ever been in my entire life.” For the first time in as long as she could remember, Abby reached out and embraced her mom. Despite everything, the pain, and sadness, the loss, her mother had always been a shoulder to cry on. “I love you, Mom,” Abby found herself saying and it felt good. “I love you too, Abigail,” her mother said. “My little girl.”
Luka adjusted his bowtie in the mirror. He saw Joe watching him as a reflection. “Today’s the big day, Josip,” he said to the baby. Joe giggled at his daddy from his playpen. Luka gazed in the mirror at his smile that seemed to now be permanently implanted on his face. He look at the baby who’s smile mimicked Abby’s to a t. He walked over and picked up his son. “Finally,” he said, holding his son close to him. The baby was still. “But you know what, Josip?” He said, looking down at the his son. As the baby played, his lips were curved like Abby’s. “I wouldn’t change a thing.”
He got Joe’s tiny dress pants and shirt and out them on. Then he put on a tiny vest and bow tie. “Now we look handsome for mommy,” he said, picking up the baby. “Let’s try to stay that way for the next few hours,” he said, wiping Joe’s saliva covered hand on a tissue. There was a knock at the door and Carter came in. “Ready to go?” He said. Luka nodded. “As ready as I’ll ever be,” he said, as he grabbed Joe’s diaper back and headed towards the door.
