Chapter Fifty-One: “The Waiting Game”
Abby sat nervously in the back of the old Volvo. Maggie drove and Neela sat next to her. She watched the familiar streets as they passed her by. Blocks and blocks of row-houses and apartment buildings turned into quickly turned into speeding blurs as she watched them out the window. The apartment wasn’t much, but she was happy there. It was the only place she ever truly felt at home. She thought about the nursery. Luka had put so much hard work into it. She remembered the many sleepless nights he spent working in there, mumbling to himself in Croatian and then humming unfamiliar songs softly as he worked. Sometimes she would stand by the door and watch him. She had been terrified of having a baby, but Luka gave her strength. He believed in her when she thought no one would or should and with each passing day, her love and trust in him continued to grow. When she was at her worst, he stuck by her. When she needed space, he backed away and never questioned. Abby knew that sometimes she was difficult, okay, sometimes she was impossible. She almost laughed when she thought about all of the hell she put him through. She pulled him in and pushed him away time and time again. But Luka was always there, trying to understand her even when she didn’t understand herself.
"You Get Me" By Michelle Branch
So I'm a little left of center
I'm a little out of tune
Some say I'm paranormal
So I just bend their spoon
Who wants to be ordinary
In a crazy, mixed-up world
I don't care what they're sayin'
As long as I'm your girl
Hey, you are on my side
And they, they just roll their eyes
You get me
When nobody understands
You come and take the chance, baby
You get me
You look inside my wild mind
Never knowing what you'll find
And still you want me all the time
Yeah, you do
Yeah, you get me
So what if I see the sunshine
In the pouring rain
Some people think I'm crazy
But you say it's okay
You've seen my secret garden
Where all of my flowers grow
In my imagination
Anything goes
I, I am all you want
They, they just read me wrong
You get me
When nobody understands
You come and hold my hand, baby
You get me
You look inside my wild mind
Never knowing what you'll find
Still you want me all the time
Yeah, you do
'Cause you get me
Hey, you are on my side
They, they just roll their eyes
'Cause you get me
When nobody understands
You come and take the chance, baby
You get me
When none of the pieces fit
You make sense of it
You get me
You look inside my wild mind
Never knowing what you'll find
And still I want you all the time
Yeah, I do
'Cause you get me
Luka tossed his car key’s to Carter. “You drive,” he said to him, smiling. Carter’s face lit up. “Do you know how long it’s been since I’ve driven a car like this?” Carter said, getting into driver’s seat. “Don’t tell me that,” Luka said. “Just get me there alive!” Carter laughed. “I may have been in Africa,” Carter started. “But I still remember how to drive a car.” They both laughed and a moment later, the car pulled away.
Dazed was the word to describe the car ride to the church. Carter was silent and Luka glanced into the back of the car to find Joe already asleep. Luka chuckled to himself at the sight of the baby and Carter looked at him. “Abby and I used to drive around in the car when Joe wouldn’t fall asleep,” Luka said. “It works every time.” Carter smiled. “I see that,” Carter said, looking into to rear view mirror at Joe.
They were silent again and Luka quickly drifted into back in a daze. He thought about the many sleepless nights he had with Abby since the baby was born. In the beginning, she became frustrated so often. It worried Luka, but he knew that she would come around in her own time, and she had. Abby had so many insecurities, most stemming from her difficult childhood and family situation. Luka had a good childhood and a loving family and unlike Abby’s first marriage, his had been successful and happy. He knew it was impossible for him to fully understand, but he really wanted to. He wanted to help Abby find that part of herself that she was searching so desperately for. He wanted her to trust him and believe that he would never leave her or let her down. Abby would often question him. “How do I know you’ll never leave me? How do you know everything will be okay?” Sometimes, Luka didn’t have the answers, and Abby knew that. “Just have faith, Abby,” he would say to her. It made him laugh that he would tell Abby, someone who had grown up with no sign of faith in her life, to believe in it. But somehow, she always had believed him and they always stuck by each other. When he was at his worst, Abby had come to him. “Have faith, Luka,” she had said to him once. It was then that he knew everything would work out. It had taken more time and effort than Luka thought he could endure, but they had made it through.
"Faith" By Celine Dion
Don't be afraid to feel this way
Gonna make you understand
It's not about you, cause I am the fool
Building castles in the sand
If I am crazy, just don't care
It doesn't mean I don't want you near,
This is the story about me and you
And it's called...
Faith!
Right beside you is where I'll stay
Oh Faith !
Just take me as I am... so please... have faith!
So many times and so many ways
I didn't know just where to go,
You gave me a sign and opened my eyes
That's the reason why I know
That you are different, you're still here
I guess you figured me out right then
Now I believe that we can make it through
And that's called...
Faith!
Right beside you is where I'll stay
Oh Faith!
Just take me as I am... so please... have faith ! have faith !
So don't be afraid... to feel this way...
Just hear me out!
Stay...
...and that's called...
Faith!
Right beside you is where I'll stay
It's not too late
Just take me as I am... so please... have faith... In me!
Oh yeah!
Just take me as I am... so please... have faith!
Maggie held out her hand and Abby paused for a moment before she took it. “You coming?” Maggie asked, still holding out her hand. Abby nodded. “I’m coming,” she said, taking her mother’s hand. As they walked towards the church, Abby looked around her. It was warm for a February day. The sun was bright and Abby shielded her eyes. The sky was clear and the most unbelievable blue. Maggie linked her arm in Abby’s as they continued walking on their way. They were greeted by a Croatian priest as the walked into the back section of the room. “Hello, Abby,” the priest said, his accent sounded a lot like Luka’s. “Hi,” Abby said, smiling slightly. Her nerves were creeping up on her. The priest patted her arm. “You can finish getting ready here,” the priest said. “I’ll see you when the ceremony begins.” Abby nodded and the priest smiled and turned to leave.
Abby stood by the mirror and looked at herself. Maggie stood behind her and fixed her hair. Their eyes met in the mirror and Abby quickly looked down. “Nervous?” Her mother asked. Abby looked up at her. “I feel like I’m going to throw up,” Abby said, her face was serious and downcast. “I’m just not good at this stuff.” Neela walked over to her. “I felt the same way when I was about to marry Michael,” Neela said. “I was so scared that I wanted to turn around and run.” Abby looked at her. “Really?” She asked. “But you and Michael…you were so obviously in love.” Neela laughed. “Well, so are you,” Neela said, smiling. “Or else you wouldn’t be feeling this way.” Abby smiled at the truth in Neela’s words.
"Drop In The Ocean"
Love took me by the hand
Love took me by surprise
Love led me to you
And love opened up my eyes
And I was drifting away
like a drop in the ocean
And now I realize that
nothing has been as beautiful
As when I saw heaven's skies
In your eyes
In your eyes
And every time I drift away
I lose myself in you
And now I see I can be me
In everything I do
'Cause I was feeling as small
as a drop in the ocean
And now I realize that
nothing has been as beautiful
As when I saw heaven's skies
In your eyes
In your eyes
Love took me by the hand
Love took me by surprise
And I was drifting away
like a drop in the ocean
And now I've realized that
nothing has been as beautiful
As when I saw heaven's skies
In your eyes
In your eyes
Luka was never good at waiting, in fact, he was more impatient then he let on. After their first break-up, Luka wanted to move on quickly. He looked for ways to fill the void that he always carried with him. Most of the time, the world around him didn’t know that he carried a feeling of emptiness with him, but Luka felt it’s presence, always. Abby understood. She was the one person in this crazy world who he felt understood because she carried a void herself. They didn’t often talk about it because most of the time, it led to fights and sadness, but it was always there. Sometimes, it felt like more of a curse than anything else. But in those moments, those moments of deep despair when Luka felt as if there were no way out, Abby always found a way to reach him. Their relationship was based on a deep but troubling connection, a constant push and pull. When it came to Abby, Luka wanted to wait, he knew he always would. For Abby, he’d wait forever.
“Till Kingdom Come”
One... Two...
Still (Steal?) my heart and hold my tongue
I feel my time, my time has come
Let me in, unlock the door
I never felt this way before
And the wheels just keep on turning
The drummer begins to drum
I don’t know which way i’m going
I don’t know which way i’ve come
Hold my head inside your hands
I need someone who understands
I need someone, someone who hears
For you i’ve waited all these years
For you i’d wait til kingdom come
Until my day, my day is done
And say you’ll come and set me free
Just say you’ll wait, you’ll wait for me
In your tears and in your blood
In your fire and in your flood
I hear you laugh, I heard you sing
I wouldn’t change a single thing
And the wheels just keep on turning
The drummers begin to drum
I don’t know which way i’m going
I don’t know what i’ve become
For you i’d wait til kingdom come
Until my days, my days are done
Say you’ll come and set me free
Just say you’ll wait, you’ll wait for me
Just say you’ll wait, you’ll wait for me
Just say you’ll wait, you’ll wait for me
