Chapter Twenty: “A Soothing Song”
Luka looked down at his baby son and took everything in. He felt a brand new sense of happiness as he saw his son without tubes and machines attached to him for the first time. He had said it before, but now his words rang even more true. “He’s perfect,” Luka whispered to himself as he stood next to his son. He reached out and touched the baby’s legs and stomach and baby Joe squirmed a little and moved his arms. “Looks like he’s ticklish,” Abby said to Luka with a smile.
For Abby, the sight of baby Joe without his vent and out of the incubator was almost too much to take. She stood, looking at him for quite some time before she reached out to him. She touched his chest first, and felt the quick beating of his tiny heart. Luka watched her as she smiled to herself. Then she gently stroked his cheek and touched his dark brown hair. “I can’t take it anymore,” she said to herself. Luka looked at her and laughed. “Well then, ask!” Abby grinned at him. “I will!” She said proudly. “Uh, excuse me?” She said to the nurse. “Can I….hold him?” The nurse smiled. “Of course you can,” she said to her.
The nurse slowly scooped up baby Joe and he let out a gurgle of excitement. Both Luka and Abby were beaming. She was nervous and her legs were shaking. Abby sat down in the rocking chair where she had spent the first two weeks of Joe’s life. It all seemed surreal to her. It had taken her 37 years to get to this point and this couldn’t have happened to her at a better time. “Here’s your mommy, Joe,” the nurse said as she gently handed the baby to Abby. “Finally,” Abby sighed as a tear rolled down her cheek. Her tiny baby son moved slightly in her arms. It felt good to hold him close to her, like he’d been for almost eight months. “I waited such a long time for this,” Abby said to the sleeping baby. “I don’t ever want to let you go.” Abby held her son for a long time, watching him peacefully sleep.
After a while, Abby looked over at Luka as he smiled, watching the sleeping baby. “Hey, Joe,” she said to the baby. “I think it’s time you meet your daddy.” As Abby handed the baby to Luka, he woke up and softly began to cry. Abby bit her lip. “Not to worry,” Luka said. “I’m a pro at this.” Luka stood up and began slowly walking and turning in rhythm around the NICCU room, but the baby’s crying continued. Abby stood up. “I’ve got this,” Luka said as he continued to spin. He then began softly humming a song that Abby didn’t recognize. She watched him as he closed his eyes and slowly opened his mouth. Then softly, he began singing to the baby in Croatian. With his eyes still closed, Luka’s singing got a little clearer and just a tiny bit louder and in almost an instant, baby Joe’s crying stopped. Abby’s jaw dropped. “Wow, your good,” she said as she walked towards the boys. “Just an old Croatian trick,” he said, beaming. “Works every time.” Abby laughed. “Oh yeah?” She asked, putting her arm around Luka’s waist and touching Joe’s tiny hand. “I used to sing that, back in Croatia…” Luka started. “And let me guess,” Abby said. “It worked every time?” Luka laughed. “Not every time,” he said. “Sometimes a baby just needs a mother’s touch. But my son, he loved it. For him, it worked almost every time.” Abby kissed Luka’s arm and then Joe’s foot. “Well, it looks like his brother likes it too.” Luka smiled as he closed his eyes and began humming the song softly once again.

Chapter Twenty-One: “Eyes Wide Open”
Feeding Joe was not as easy as Abby expected it to be. He would fuzz and only take tiny sips, and most of the time, more of the baby formula ended up all over him instead of in his mouth. “Come on, Joey,” Abby said softly. “I know you can do this.” She became even more frustrated when the baby began to cry. “He eats better for Luka,” Abby said to Dr. Coburn who was looking at Joe’s chart. “It’ll get easier, Abby,” Dr. Coburn said to her. “Baby’s often struggle with eating if they are born prematurely or traumatically like Joe was.” Abby nodded. “Well, he needs to start eating so he gets stronger and we can take him home,” Abby said, smiling and tickling the baby’s stomach. “I just want to take him home.” Dr. Coburn patted Abby’s arm. “I know,” she said. “Joe will be able to go home really soon. I promise.”
Abby was still trying to feed Joe when Luka walked in. “How’s the boy?” Luka asked, kissing Abby and then the top of Joe’s head. “Not very hungry,” Abby answered. Luka sat down, dressed in his lab coat, stethoscope around his neck. Baby Joe had been born three weeks ago today, and that meant Luka was back to work. It scared Abby to have to do things on her own, but she loved spending every minute she could with her baby. Abby turned the baby to face Luka and then handed him over. Luka kissed the baby’s hand. All of the sudden, baby Joe’s eyes lit up and opened really wide. “He smiled at me,” Luka said, beaming. Abby laughed. “Don’t get too full of yourself. Babies can’t even begin to focus on objects and they usually don’t smile until they are at least a month old.” Luka looked at the baby. “Well, daddy knows a smile when he sees one,” he said to the baby. “Sometimes mommy gets too opinionated.” Abby laughed. “Well, maybe he looked at me and thought to himself ‘Wow, my daddy is a doctor! And a handsome one at that! I hope I look like him!” Luka laughed. Abby smiled as Joe locked his tiny fist around her thumb. “Or, maybe he is just really smart like his mommy,” she said. “And when he saw you, he thought ‘Wow, look at that goofy face daddy is making at me. I’m glad I take after you, mommy!’ And then he laughed at you.” Luka grinned at Abby and then at the baby. “Well, I guess we’ll never know until he starts talking,” Luka said. Abby set the bottle down and held out her arms. “Like I said…it’s gas,” she laughed. She nodded across the room. “Now daddy, can you please get us a new diaper?” Luka shook his head and obeyed. “I’ll tell you, Joe,” he said to the baby. “Your mom is lucky I love her so much,” he said as he wrapped his arms around Abby. “I love you both so much.”

Chapter Twenty-Two: “Picture Perfect”
Abby paced around Luka’s apartment tirelessly. It was their first night away from Joe at the hospital, but it would be their last. Luka laid in bed and watched as Abby marched around the apartment, cleaning and organizing. Everything was laid out perfectly. The basinet was on the left side of the bed, next to Abby. Baby bottles were lined up on the kitchen counter, and bottles with fresh formula were already in the refrigerator. The nursery looked perfect. The freshly painted yellow walls waited to cheerfully welcome baby Joe.
Luka sat up. “Abby? Are you coming to bed?” He said. “In a minute,” she answered. “I’m fixing something.” Luka sighed as she got out of bed and walked towards the nursery. “Fixing what?” Luka said. “Everything is brand new. Joe isn’t even home yet.” Luka stepped into the nursery and looked around, but there was no sign of Abby. “Where are you?” He called out confused. “I’m down here,” Abby answered. Luka followed the sound of Abby’s voice to behind the leather sofa. “What the hell are you doing?” He asked her. She stood up. “I was just putting these little outlet protector things into the outlets,” she said. “These are pretty neat. Who gave them to us? I think we should buy some more.”
Luka sighed as he sat down on the couch. “Abby, sit,” he said, patting his lap. “What?” she said as she sat down. “I’m just trying to get everything done before the baby gets home.” Luka laughed. “Abby, it’s 2am,” he said. “And you are putting outlet protectors all over our house. Our son isn’t even a month old! I think we have time.” Abby rested her head on Luka’s shoulder. “I’m just anxious, that’s all,” she said to him. “I’ve been waiting over three weeks to bring him home. I just want everything to be perfect.” “I know,” Luka said. “But right now, I think we need to get some sleep. Once the baby is home, we might not be getting very much.” Abby nodded as she looked around the nursery. “I think he’s going to like it in here,” she said, smiling. “Everything for boys is blue, but I think yellow is so much nicer. It’s so…happy.” Luka put his chin on Abby’s shoulder. “He’ll love it.”
Luka was surprised at how quickly Abby fell asleep once her body hit the covers. Now he was the one who was lying awake, thinking. He took in the quiet that surrounded him. Abby’s quiet, shallow breathing was comforting. He imagined the chaos of raising a little boy. It wouldn’t be long before the brand new clothes and diapers were all outgrown and used up. Soon enough, the bright yellow nursery wouldn’t smell of fresh paint anymore and it would be messy and lived in. All of this excited Luka. He dreamed of Joe’s first words and first steps as he drifted off into a deep sleep.
Abby woke up at around seven-thirty and was surprised to see that Luka was already out of bed. She walked groggily into the kitchen to find Luka at the stove. He smiled at her. “I made you some eggs,” he said. “With ketchup of course.” Abby walked over to the kitchen table and sat down. “Wow, this is nice,” she said. Luka scooped himself a plate of eggs and sat down across from her. “I already put the car seat in the car,” he said to her. “In the backseat of course, facing backwards.” Abby smiled. “Wow, you really are a pro at this, aren’t you?” She said. Luka swallowed a mouthful of coffee and put down his cup. “This is a big day,” he said. “I want it to be perfect for you.”
Baby Joe’s discharge went smoothly. All of the doctors and nurses made a big fuzz over him before they left the floor. Dr. Coburn was the last to see him off. “I’ll see you next week for his check-up,” she said to Abby and Luka and she patted Joe’s arm. “You did good, Abby,” Dr. Coburn said. Abby smiled. “Thank you, for everything.” Dr. Coburn nodded. “Of course,” she said as she turned to go. Abby double checked the buckle on the car seat before she let Luka pick it up. He smiled at her. “I’m just making sure,” she said. “I didn’t say a word,” Luka laughed back. Abby trailed behind for a moment as Luka carried Joe towards the elevator. She looked at him as he carried their son and smiled. Baby Joe’s big blue eyes were almost identical to Luka’s. They were both beautiful.
Luka turned when he noticed Abby trailing behind. “You coming?” He called. “Yeah,” she answered simply. “I’m coming.” As they got on the elevator, Abby pushed the button of the ground floor. Luka looked at her and smiled. “Oh come on,” Abby started. “Look at him! I have to show him off!” He laughed. “Okay,” he said. When they reached the desk, Morris and Neela were already there. They crowded around the baby quickly. “He’s getting so big!” Neela said. “I know,” Abby answered. “It’s scary, isn’t it?” Morris began talking gibberish to the baby. “He’s such a cutie wootie. Little baby waybe.” Abby laughed as she rolled her eyes. “He looks just like you, Abbs,” Morris said to her. Abby laughed again. “Look at his eyes. They are the same as Luka’s!” Morris looked from the baby to Luka. “Eh, I don’t see it,” he said. “Well, he has Abby’s smile,” Luka said. Abby looked at the baby, a tiny smile crossed his face. Her mouth opened wide. “Was that a….did he just?” Luka nodded. “Yup,” he said. “That was his first smile.”
